Algoma U hires new academic dean

Algoma University is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Richard McCutcheon as the new Academic Dean.

McCutcheon will serve as Academic Dean for the next three years, beginning in January of 2015.

“We welcome Dr. McCutcheon to our senior leadership team as Academic Dean,” said University President, Dr. Richard Myers. “Dr. McCutcheon brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the post-secondary realm that will help move Algoma University forward in its next stage of development.”

The Academic Dean is both a member of faculty and a member of the University administration.

The Dean's Office is responsible for the hiring and development of teaching faculty and the delivery of all academic programming.

The University Senate elects an Academic Dean every three years.

McCutcheon previously served as Academic Dean of Menno Simons College, a college of Canadian Mennonite University, affiliated with the University of Winnipeg.   

In his role, he administered and oversaw two large academic programs.

He has extensive experience in teaching and working with conflict resolution, peace and conflict studies, and interpersonal and group studies, including work overseas and with non-governmental organizations.

McCutcheon completed his undergraduate degree from Brandon University, a small university like Algoma U.

He completed his Master’s and doctoral studies at McMaster University.

His Master’s degree was in religious studies, with a focus on eastern religious traditions, including Buddhism, Hinduism, Confucianism, and Shinto.

His PhD thesis in anthropology examined how North Americans perceived Iraq at a cultural level.

He also sits on the Board of Mediation Services in Manitoba, the largest in the province.

“I’m very excited to begin my new position with Algoma University,” said McCutcheon. “I’m going to spend the next few months getting to know the institution better, including the students and staff, but also getting to know the community. What attracted me was this interesting set of individuals who are trying to do something special. I wouldn’t have moved if I hadn’t found this dynamic community. If I can help the University community, and through them, the broader community, I want to help. I believe in a life of service, and that’s what I’m here to do, to serve these people.”

Currently, McCutcheon is teaching courses in global and local relations at the University’s campus in Sault Ste. Marie and at Algoma U’s satellite programming in Timmins in the field of Community Economic and Social Development (CESD).

He is a member of the University’s Law and Politics Department.

McCutcheon’s wife Tamara and son Declan have recently arrived in Sault Ste. Marie to join him in his new endeavours.
