NEWS RELEASE

CHRISTIAN PROVENZANO, MAYORAL CANDIDATE

**************************
I do not believe that it is a political leader’s job to tell you how things are, either good or bad. You know for yourself, you live it.

For some people things are good and for others they aren’t. Many people live somewhere in between.

I believe it is a political leader’s job to listen, to identify the issues and challenges that require our collective attention, to have the courage to raise those issues and then to see them through.

I have spoken with many of you at your doors, in the mall, at Greyhound games and just in passing.

Many of you share the same concerns: your property taxes are rising, good opportunities are harder to come by, our water quality isn’t what it used to be, our downtown needs help.

These are legitimate concerns. I share these concerns and I showed that by raising them as issues in this campaign.

I was criticized when I did so and that is natural and understandable.

When someone says things that aren’t consistently or loudly said, they are challenging the status quo.

As we all know, the status quo does not often like to be challenged.

I want you to know this: I am not concerned about the status quo. I have no interest in it or loyalty to it.

I am interested solely and specifically in our community. I am interested in its health, its stability and its vibrancy.

If I ruffle some feathers raising the concerns you raise with me, so be it.

That is, in my best judgment, both my job and my responsibility.

Sault Ste. Marie is a great city with great people.

No other city has anything on us in some very important ways: our community is tightly knit, we do what we do well, we have a beautiful waterfront and great recreational activities, and we are strategically located with access to international markets by both land and water.

We can build on these assets but we have to acknowledge a few important facts.

The fact is that the City is now spending approximately 185 million dollars a year, almost 20 million dollars more than it spent in 2009.

The fact is that when spending goes up, taxes go up and when taxes go up it is harder to make ends meet.

The fact is that we have fewer young families here than we used to and good job opportunities are harder to come by.

We need to address these facts honestly and head on.

I believe that we can because I believe that our community is stronger than its respective challenges.

Addressing these challenges will no doubt take some time and I want you to know that I am committed.

If you trust me with this job, I will give it my most sincere effort and I ask for your support and your vote.

We can improve our community, but only if we are honest with each other and only if we work together.
