Hayes safe, says assistant

Sault Ste. Marie MP Bryan Hayes is safe, but not yet available for comment, according to a staff member from his Ottawa office.

Sault Ste. Marie MP Bryan Hayes is safe, but not yet available for comment, according to a staff member from his Ottawa office.

Jody Taylor, executive assistant to Hayes, said Hayes and other MPs were let out of a lockdown on Parliament Hill early Wednesday evening.

The lockdown on Parliament Hill and surrounding area occurred after an armed man fatally shot a Canadian Forces soldier in Ottawa Wednesday morning.

Soon after, an armed man stormed the Parliament buildings, coming within metres of the caucus rooms where Conservative and New Democrat MPs were meeting.

The gunman let off several shots before he was killed, reportedly by the House of Commons Sgt.-at-Arms.

Taylor told SooToday all media questions were being directed to the Minister of Public Safety’s office.
