NDP Leader Tom Mulcair Principal Secretary, Karl Bélanger, made the following statement:

“This morning’s horrifying attack has shocked all Canadians and shattered the peace of our nation’s capital. Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the soldier killed and the people who were injured, and we are deeply grateful for the soldiers and law enforcement officials who quickly and courageously protected the public today.

As we seek to comprehend the enormity of this event, Canada stands united in grief and in resolute determination that we will not give in to fear. May we give strength to each other at this difficult time.

The leader of the Official opposition has spoken to Prime Minister Stephen Harper and will be issuing a statement later."

OTTAWA – Liberal Director of Communications Planning, Kate Purchase, today issued the following statement on the shootings in Ottawa:

“The sympathies and prayers of the Leader of the Liberal Party of Canada, Justin Trudeau, and the Liberal Caucus are with the families of those who have been victimized by these heinous acts of violence in our National Capital.

“All Canadians are particularly shocked and saddened by the horrific shooting of a young man, as he dutifully guarded our National War Memorial.

“Violence directed at Canada's democratic institutions is particularly abhorrent. We want to thank the courageous men and women of the many security forces who risked their lives to keep Canadians safe today.

“Canadians are a resilient people who treasure our freedom. We cannot and will not allow armed criminals to terrorize our country and our democracy. Mr. Trudeau spoke with the Prime Minister earlier this afternoon and offered the Liberal Party of Canada’s absolute support as we seek to prosecute those responsible for this attack, and prevent events like it from happening in the future.”
