NEWS RELEASE
SAULT COLLEGE DIGITAL PHOTOGRAPHY
Sault College’s Digital Photography students are excited to experiment with the long tradition of political portraits and are challenging the Mayoral Candidates in the 2014 Sault Ste. Marie Municipal Election to sit for a photo shoot.
The students have already started researching their candidates and have started scouting locations and styles in hopes that the candidates are willing to show their support for local students and the arts by accepting the challenge.
Knowing how busy the candidates are this close to the election, the students will only need 20 minutes to create their images and are willing to shoot almost anywhere locally.
The photos won’t be just headshots; each image will use uniquely selected lighting, pose, style and location in order to create an original portrait. Some students have developed concepts tailored specifically to the individual candidate’s platform.
The students will also be donating a print to each candidate to thank them for their participation.
“I think it’s exciting that the students are using their newly acquired photography skills to engage in politics,” says Colin Crowell, instructor for the Digital Photography and Imaging program at Sault College. “Nationally, students are typically a lower represented demographic in elections. I imagine that the candidates and the community will be excited to see youth getting involved and engaged in politics and their city in this way.”
If the candidates accept the challenge, the images will be released to Sootoday.com on Election Day.
