Amaroso says release was 'an honest mistake'

Debbie Amaroso is taking responsibility after a city staffer sent out a campaign press release using a city email account.

“It was an honest mistake and certainly one I take responsibility for and (one which) won’t happen again,” said the incumbent mayor when contacted about the release this morning.

The release, which was a response to an earlier release from challenger Christian Provenzano, was sent out Wednesday from a City of Sault Ste. Marie email address belonging to a staff member in the mayor’s office.

Amaroso called the use of an official email account an “administrative oversight,” saying the mayor’s office employee who sent out the release also volunteers in her own time.

“It was me not saying to her ‘Make sure you do it off site, off hours, off work,’” and so in her great efficiency she just did it on her coffee break,” said Amaroso.

The email was sent via the employee’s city account, “whereas she would have normally done it through her own, after hours,” said Amaroso.

Amaroso noted the employee does not live in Sault Ste. Marie and is not a voter.
