The photo above takes us back to a another time.
A time of verandas, a time of regattas, a time when bands had names like Erik Wilde and His Collegians - the time of the St. Mary’s River Boat Club.
The Sault Ste. Marie Museum tells us a bit about the old club which once sat on a site known since 1969 as the home of the Rotary/YMCA Tennis and Aquatic Club, and soon to be known as the Sault College Tennis and Boat Club.
There were two main regattas each year—July 1st and Labour Day.
Teams and individuals competed and earned their medals.
The dance pavilion in the upper storey of the club where couples danced the night away on a summer evening to the music styles of bands such as The Originals, Eric Wilde & His Collegians.
The outdoor verandas provided a gentle breeze on a warm summer’s evening.
The Boat Club burned in October 1939.
Funds were raised by local citizens and a new Boat Club building was built.
