Lake Superior State University Geology Professor Paul Kelso (second from right) helps his students calibrate ground-penetrating radar before they take a data run on September 24.

The Sault Tribe of Chippewa Indians is working with Kelso's geophysics class to survey an old landfill site last used in the 1950s to see if it can accommodate expansion of an existing RV park adjacent to Kewadin Casino in Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan.

The class project is to map the site's dimensions and get a feel for some of the subterranean characteristics, which could shed light on soil mechanical properties as well.

From left are geology majors Shana Boynton (from Muskegon, Michigan), Jessica Appledorn (Fountain, Michigan), and Daryn McKevitt (Negaunee, Michigan).

Run a Web search on LSSU geology to learn more about that area of study at Lake State.
