Nominations trickle in for Thessalon municipal council

THESSALON - With just two days left to file nominations for a seat on municipal council in Ontario, only three candidates have filed with the clerk in the Town of Thessalon to serve for the next four-year term.

Marcel Baron and Sharon MacKinnnon have each filed for one of six seats up for grabs for the position of councillor and just one man has filed for mayor as of Wednesday evening.

Jan Pawlukiewicz has filed for mayor.

Incumbent mayor Brent Rankin has indicated for some time now that he would not be seeking re-election this fall.

To date, none of the incumbent councillors has filed a nomination.

In the last municipal election in 2000, there were two candidates for mayor and 15 for councillor.

In all Ontario municipalities, potential eligible candidates have until Friday, September 12 at 2 p.m. to file with the clerk to stand for the October 27 election, however, because filing can take several minutes, candidates are encouraged to file ahead of the 2 p.m. deadline.
