NEWS RELEASE

PHOENIX RISING AND
WOMYN 4 SOCIAL JUSTICE

**************************
Phoenix Rising and Womyn 4 Social Justice invite the community to participate in this year’s Take Back the Night march.

Every year across Canada and around the world since the early 1970’s women have taken to the streets at night to protest the violence that occurs against women and children.

Take Back the Night was a slogan first used as a theme for a national protest march in San Francisco.

Here in Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, we have a tradition of holding our own march during the third week of September.

This year the Take Back the Night March will be take place on Thursday, September 18, 2014 starting at Phoenix Rising at 6:30 p.m. and ending at the Elks Hall, with ceremonies to follow.

The number of people who participate in this march grows each year.

The Take Back the Night March is an occasion for women to celebrate our strengths and courage, to commit to continue to work towards change, to collectively shatter the silence, and to speak out against violence.

It also encourages victims of violence to move forward and away from their abusive situations and provides hope and promise for their continued survival.

About Womyn 4 Social Justice

Womyn 4 Social Justice is a grassroots organization made up of women in the community who are dedicated to working towards eradicating all forms of violence in our community, in particular violence against women and children.

We host four events per year including: Take Back the Night, Celebration of Women for The International Day for the Elimination of Violence Against Women and Children, February 14 March for Missing and Murdered Women and International Women’s Day events.

We often partner with other organizations in the community to bring light to issues through these events and believe in the right of all the members of our community to live in safety and to be treated with respect and dignity.

About Phoenix rising

Phoenix Rising is a community of women, including service providers and users, who recognize the importance of determining, designing, and delivering support services from a woman's perspective.

As an organization, we wish to be a model of feminist philosophy. We encourage equality for women, respect for individual differences, and the practice of women helping women. We recognize the unequal status of women in our society and are committed to assisting women in gaining control over their lives and in making informed and knowledgeable decisions.
