Major power outage hits Michigan's Upper Peninsula

Prior to 4 p.m. today, Cloverland Electric Cooperative which services approximately 42,000 accounts in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, experienced “a major transmission related power outage.

Prior to 4 p.m. today, Cloverland Electric Cooperative which services approximately 42,000 accounts in Michigan’s Upper Peninsula, experienced “a major transmission related power outage.”

Cloverland reported via Facebook that 17 of its 42 substations were affected by the outage leaving approximately 15,500 users without power.

Service crews have discovered downed trees to be the problem and are in the process of restoring power.

The following statement was posted to Cloverland’s website at 7 p.m. this evening.

Transmission outage update

We have 11 of 17 substations affected by the transmission outage are back in service at this hour.

These substations serve the following geographic areas including DeTour, Drummond, Pickford, Cedarville, Goetzville, Eckerman, Raco, Brimley, Rudyard, Kincheloe and Kinross.

In their line patrols, crews identified a broken cross arm on a transmission pole and another tree on the line.

The transmission outage is still impacting services in Sault Ste. Marie, Sugar Island and Dafter areas.
