LANSING, MI - The Michigan Library Association (MLA) is pleased to announce that Kenneth B. Miller, Jr. has been named 2014 MLA Librarian of the Year.

Miller, director of the Superior District Library in Sault Ste. Marie, will receive the award during the MLA 2014 Annual Conference, October 15-17, in Grand Rapids.

Miller has served in the library profession for more than 40 years.

Having earned his MLA from Wayne State University, he has worked as a librarian in urban and rural libraries in both peninsulas of Michigan.

For 30 years Miller was employed by Detroit Public Library and Jackson District Library and for the past 10 years he has been employed by Bayliss Public Library in Sault Ste. Marie, Hiawathaland Library Cooperative (HLC), and the newly created Superior District Library (SDL).

Throughout his career Miller has demonstrated an understanding of libraries and a vision for their future.

His spirit of "Yes we can" has challenged his colleagues above and below the bridge to do what many thought impossible.

Miller is active not only in serving his profession as a leader and mentor, but in his community as well.

For over 30 years, the MLA Librarian of the Year Award has recognized a librarian’s outstanding contributions and accomplishments to the library community over a long period of time.

Winners of this award provide innovative library service to his or her community and promote collaboration among libraries.

The MLA Librarian of the Year shows evidence of personal and professional achievement as well as initiative and creativity.

They are leaders who provide cutting edge ideas that inspire people.

The Michigan Library Association (MLA) is Michigan's oldest and largest library association spanning more than a century.

MLA's membership is comprised of more than 1,500 individual and institutional members from public, academic, private and special libraries.

Guided by the belief that free and open access to information is the cornerstone of a free society, the Michigan Library Association advocates for libraries and the free access of information on behalf of the state's residents.
