On Thursday, August 7, MAS Casting will host Breaking Into The Business at the Delta Waterfront Hotel from 6 to 8:30 p.m.

The film and television industry seminar presented by casting director Melissa A. Smith will cover everything one needs to know about getting started in the business.

"Unfortunately there are a lot of scams in this industry and a lot of people looking to take advantage of people who want to become stars and get into film and television," Smith told SooToday.com.

Topics to be covered include reputable representation, self representation, various unions, the audition and casting process, northern directors and producers, how to get your children into the business, on-camera IPA rates, industry etiquette, and tips specific to Northern Ontario's growing film industry.

The first thing one should do before jumping into film, Smith said, is to figure out if the industry is right for you by participating in training and getting on a film set in any capacity (background, crew, etc.).

"A lot of people are under the impression that being in a feature film is very glamourous and unfortunately that's not quite the case," she explained. "It's a lot of work and long hours, so it's really important that you know what you're getting into."

Born in Sudbury and now living in Toronto, Smith has contributed to a number of feature films and television series, including those for NBC Universal, ShowCase, Sony Pictures, CTV, Hallmark and the SyFy Network.

In addition to MAS Casting, 22-year-old Smith also opened MAS Acting Studios in Sudbury earlier this year.
