Twin Sault EDCs now formally cozy

Further economic and business cooperation between the Twin Saults is on the horizon thanks to a formal agreement signed today by the Sault Ste. Marie Economic Development Corporations (SSMEDC) of Ontario and Michigan.

The memorandum of understanding establishes the framework for a number of shared projects, along with the creation of a Joint International Relations and Economic Growth Committee.

When formed, the committee will focus on collaborative initiatives in strategic sectors such as manufacturing, information technology, energy and transportation.

For instance, if an American company is looking to set up a location north of the border, or if a Canadian company is looking to expand into the U.S., the two SSMEDCs would work together to attract the firm.

Ultimately, the partnership is designed to stimulate economic growth and create jobs in the region.   

“It is always better to work together for a common goal. In the end, both communities will benefit from this enhanced cooperation,” said Don Mitchell, President and Board Chair of the Sault Ste. Marie [Ontario] Economic Development Corporation. “The formal agreement between our two SSMEDCs will help foster additional economic partnerships between our communities.” 

The cities of Sault Ste. Marie, Ontario, and Sault Ste. Marie, Michigan, signed an historic Sister City agreement in 2012.

The accord, which was the first of its kind for border cities in North America, set the groundwork for collaboration to take place.

The memorandum of understanding signed today by the two SSMEDCs will further advance this connection.

“There’s a solid relationship between the Twin Saults that has existed for generations, and this formal agreement will bolster these ties even further,” said Jeff Holt, Board Chair of the Sault Ste. Marie [Michigan] Economic Development Corporation. “Today’s signing marks the first step in forging ahead on economic and trade-related initiatives that will benefit both of our communities.”
