Go skate! (6 photos)

Sunday, June 22, 2014   by: Donna Hopper

Two-year-old Rosalie Jewett (pictured) was pretty happy to have a bit of help as she skated down the path Saturday afternoon.

The afternoon saw dozens of skaters gather at the Sault Skate Park for Go Skateboarding Day presented by West 49 in cooperation with the Rad Zone.

First on the day's competition roster was the head-to-head Game of Skate.

The battle came down to a three-way game with Dustin Harrison, Drew Cameron, and Dylan Dauphinee.

Dauphinee took first place with Harrison and Cameron taking home runner up prizes.

Event organizers awarded a special 'most dedicated skater' prize to 14-year-old Melissa Jennings, who was the only girl in the entire competition.

She also shreds.

During the Best Trick competition, Christian Shawana landed the best trick down the stairs with a double heelflip.

In the Park Run competition, each skater was given two two-minute runs to show their stuff.

Nathan Currie took first place, Drew Cameron second, and Justin Lepage third.

Currie, who's been skating for the last decade, told that skateboarding enjoys mass appeal because it allows for individual creativity and freedom, it's a highly social sport, and it develops discipline.

"Skating is definitely a frustrating sport," he said. "But there's no feeling compared to landing a new trick."
