FedNor helps out a town with its bleach ambitions

Monday, June 16, 2014   by: Staff

The Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario (FedNor) announced today an investment to strengthen the community’s tourism industry, and diversify and grow the local economy.

A FedNor investment of $29,766 in the Blind River Development Corporation (BRDC) will support two local projects, including the development of a feasibility study for a bleach (sodium hypochlorite) production facility in the community and an economic assessment and conceptual design for a recreational vehicle (RV) campground.

Both projects have been identified by the community as economic development priorities.

Quick Facts

  • The funding announced today is provided through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, which supports projects that promote sustainable community economic development, enhance business development and growth, and facilitate innovation throughout the region.
  • Since 2006, through FedNor’s Northern Ontario Development Program, the Government of Canada has invested more than $308 million in support of 1,500 projects. These investments have created more than 15,000 jobs throughout Northern Ontario.
  • The Blind River Development Corporation is a registered not-for-profit organization with a mandate to identify and create employment and development opportunities in Blind River through sustainable economic and social development.

“Our government is proud to support priority projects that create economic opportunities and enhance tourism in the Town of Blind River and across Northern Ontario. By ensuring people, businesses and communities have access to the resources they need to succeed and create jobs, the Harper Government is helping position the area for sustainable growth and long-term economic prosperity,” said the Honourable Greg Rickford, Canada’s Minister of Natural Resources and Minister for the Federal Economic Development Initiative for Northern Ontario.

“We are proud to partner with the Government of Canada and FedNor to build a strong, sustainable economic foundation for the Town of Blind River. The economic potential of these important projects will help revitalize and strengthen the local economy, and assist in attracting private sector investment to the area and creating jobs,” said Sue Jensen, Mayor of the Town of Blind River
