Grant B. Walsh and Chairman of the Group Health Centre Board, Dr. Brian Mitchell, have announced that Mr. Walsh will be leaving the Group Health Centre as President and CEO.

Mr. Walsh plans to continue his work in strategy and performance improvement with other healthcare organizations.

“Grant Walsh has made significant improvements at GHC,” said Dr. Mitchell. “These include organizational restructuring, creating a sustainable future, implementing infrastructure renewal, and acquiring two additional medical centres. The Board is very appreciative of Grant’s contributions. We wish him well in the future.”

Alex Lambert, the current CFO of the Group Health Centre, has been appointed to the position of Interim CEO. Mr. Lambert commented, “We are thankful for the great work Grant has done, and remain focused on improving service to patients.”

The Group Health Centre serves over 71,000 Sault Ste. Marie and Algoma District residents, and is the leader in providing quality outpatient service and care with high patient satisfaction.

I'm glad someone thinks these were improvements because I have not heard one patient or one staff member agree. Malls are a great success because it is one stop shopping and basically that is what the GHC was when it was an awarding winning institution. Just about everything that made it special and a joy to participate in has been dismantled. Having to run around town to get the services that were once housed in one building IS NOT an improvement. Patients are now a number to push through the system as cheaply as possible and we all feel it.
MYPOINT 6/10/2014 12:18:44 PM Report

I truly liked the "old" GHC and I totally dislike the 'new' model which is definitely not as well run as before in my humble opinion.

Of course, there will be others who disagree which is their right.

As always, your views may differ :)
Javaman 6/10/2014 12:34:01 PM Report

What is the REAL reason he is leaving?
welcome2 6/10/2014 12:50:06 PM Report

Am I wrong in believing that he has not been in that position for long?
speersbob 6/10/2014 1:18:27 PM Report

Hey lets not criticize too much. All the board members are still getting huge raises. Thats a success no? All they had to do was slash various services and make life generally harder for sick people.

But the people at the top will get a bonus and pat themselves on the back. I don't even go there for anything now really, and like 75% of my stuff used to be in 1 location... : )
Javaman 6/10/2014 1:26:11 PM Report

Strange how things happen. The PUC wanted to consolidate everything into one building...hence the new showcase on Second Line. Now Group health seems to have done the opposite...they have real estate all over town///CRAZY.

nice job Grant come in turn the place upside down fire all the experienced people and leave the mess for somebody else to clean up
Preciousjoy 6/10/2014 2:51:57 PM Report

I wondered how it worked with having two brothers in top positions. Seemed rather questionable as to what was truly happening at GHC.

I, too, would like to know the real reason for Grant's leaving as a big red flag has gone up where he is concerned!

Can the people not get the truth for once rather than a cover up as it appears to be?

Now that all the good people have been let go the next President/CEO has to clean up yet another mess created by those in high positions!
Racer123 6/10/2014 4:20:19 PM Report

The real reason I was told he had to step down, because a email was going to be sent to the media with his extra activities with a X employee that was let go.
northernmale 6/10/2014 5:56:52 PM Report

I like how things get taken off of here. Seems I am not the only one who questions about a family member holding a top position. Maybe rather then pull comments Soo TODAY should start digging and find out the real truth. To often things are pulled on here way to much sensor ship on here .This is a news site and a news story , so lets dig for the news.
wife 6/10/2014 7:22:22 PM Report

My family and I have been members since the beginning. in fact our enrollment number is in the 60's. My Doctor is top of the line and looks after me with great care.
The specialists are moving to the Great Northern Site to be closer to the hospital.
Doctors at other sites joined the GHC and already had their offices downtown. No way could the building at its present size accommodate all physicians and surgeons.
Some people on here bitch about everything. They should be careful of suggesting that there is wrong doing.
Dead End Kid 6/10/2014 7:39:07 PM Report

I heard from the inside that he was all about cutting jobs. I think it's safe to say the GHC employees are glad that he's leaving.
mygramma 6/10/2014 7:53:36 PM Report

Mr. Grant is moving on to other health care centers to create havoc as that is what he is hired to do.. question being.. was this a direction from the current Liberal government.. and how much was his bonus when he left. ? The contract with the union was basically set fire to and some hourly employees were , and are, paid only by the client and without consultation or approval for this change. I know of one 24 year employee who ended up without work and had to leave the city; two other family groups left with her , so in the end, three families left Sault Ste. Marie. The damage is already done here and it is up to the general public to decide whether or not the current provincial government mandated this change, and then vote your conscience on Thursday.

Wife6...how wrong you are.....lolol...your Mr Grant is a tyrant and played with way to many peoples lives and emotions....on all different levels....
players 6/10/2014 9:35:32 PM Report

Hey wife 6 apparently you have no inside track on the wrong doings.Hopefully GHC will get back to health care of the citizens of sault ste marie and the care will be improved.Love visiting the GHC to see people lying on the floor with their kids.It was all about money so he can get his big raise at the end of the year.Patient care took a backside to these actions.Hopefully this will allow the employees a better work environment now that he is gone.I have been a patient for 25 years and the last 2 years by far the worst the GHC has provided health care services.

Hope next individual will have class and cares about the citizens of sault ste marie
RELAC 6/10/2014 10:14:33 PM Report

Maybe they won't , do that they only want to feel they pockets with money.
They don't look down we are nothing to them.
They when we walk by they can't even say hi we are to low for them.
Dark Horse 6/10/2014 10:21:36 PM Report

The most opinionated know the least. Those with the least responsibility think they know what's best. If you're going to be critical you'd better be pretty close to perfect yourself - that includes inaccurate messages full of spelling mistakes...that alone says something about you.
northernmale 6/10/2014 10:59:43 PM Report

Dark Horse get off your high horse. Just because someone spells something wrong it does not mean they are not smart. As the old saying goes let me blow out your candle so my candle will look brighter .. You fit this saying well.
Dead End Kid 6/10/2014 11:31:12 PM Report

Dark Horse ,you are being critical by criticizing others for stating their opinions. That makes you no better than anyone else.
Goalienut 6/11/2014 2:35:30 AM Report

The last time I was at the McNabb site to attend to the walk-in-clinic, there were people everywhere. That site is rather small now for all the services they are trying to offer. The doctor ordered an ultra-sound and directed me to the lab-more people everywhere. The person at the lab told me they coudn't get me in for 3 months. When I went home, I called the lab at the doctor's building on Queen and they were able to get me in the very next week. Somethings not right there.
dadal 6/11/2014 7:34:27 AM Report

When I was younger, there were just as many people attending physicians at GHC but in a more organized way. All services were there...xray, lab, etc. But now GHC "outsources" many services to places outside the building. They took in more doctors, offer less services and longer wait times. This is a S. Ont mentality where you CAN change to a private doctor fairly fast. In the Soo with GHC swallowing doctors into their "club', this leaves less private doctors for a alternative choice. We are forced to use them on their terms which I dislike. And being charged for every little thing possible-dr notes, parking, etc. We can hope the new overlord will revert thing but as history dictates, it will be left the same as everything done was aimed at lining the boards' pockets.
