Why on earth would you approach a bear especially a mother with two cubs because you were concerned it was injured?! It's not like you're going to be able to help her...common sense people
Sam C 5/31/2014 9:51:06 AM Report

I sympathize with the concerned citizen, but... Nature really does take care of its own. Sometimes, although we may not like it, animals die from their injuries. Others, like this bear, adapt.

Rarely is human intervention required.
saultbie25 5/31/2014 9:59:13 AM Report

Jamie333- you are so right! Some people are just so stupid and lack common sense.

It was probably one of those vegan people who don't have common sense, they are so concerned over "animal welfare" that they vandalize people's property to try to "save" an animal when more times than not they scare them and scar them for life.
Auntiej 5/31/2014 10:26:03 AM Report

The mother and cubs were in my neighbours garage yesterday around 11:45 on Penno Rd.
debo 5/31/2014 10:32:15 AM Report

Wow, not often you see a "reverse baloney sandwich".
"AKA".... Posts #'s 2 and 3 (normal slices of white bread or perhaps 16 grain COMMON SENSE) enclosed by .... Posts #'s 1 and 4 (slices of low grade baloney/spam).

Perhaps the two purveyors of those less than meaty offerings can enlighten other readers as to how they are so certain or "probably" certain of the mindset behind the ill-advised actions of the concerned citizen.

You seem quite eager to ascribe motives to the actions of the citizen without any apparent proof.

Not that anyone should accuse YOU of having an AGENDA. :€ (Best attempt at bear face)
SimsDrum 5/31/2014 10:41:18 AM Report

Mmmmmm Baloney!
asp 5/31/2014 10:59:39 AM Report

They are looking for food, because us humans keep building into their space so food is becoming rare. My grandma would take us blueberry picking and we would have to bring old pots and bang them when we saw a bear. That was enough to scare them away. LOL
right wing 5/31/2014 11:05:08 AM Report

Yes debo it certainly would take some serious in depth thinking on your part to arrive at a "motive"....perhaps you could assemble a think tank to figure it out.

Dumb meet dumber....
fcubed 5/31/2014 11:10:49 AM Report

Unfortunately, in this city, it is going to require more than one human mauling by a large black furry creature to have the Minister of Natural Resources and City Authorities to perform the necessary duty of eradicating dangerous wild animals within the built up areas of the city.
AlwaysAWinner 5/31/2014 11:26:44 AM Report

so incredibly stupid to go try to help it

all these dumb animal activists sit there and say "a bear would never do that! it was bluffing!"

it's stupid to think animals can be 100% predicted. I don't care now nice and cuddly they look, they can kill and they will kill. no one can predict when, that's why they're called WILD.
IgnorantNortherner 5/31/2014 11:30:39 AM Report

right wing, do you make a living as a psychic? A real life Miss Cleo, if you will? You are a truly special person with your amazing ability to determine the beliefs and motives of strangers. Might you share your secret as to how you do it?

@fcubed, just a reminder that we live in northern Ontario and that BEARS LIVE HERE, TOO. It's really not that hard to keep bears away for the most part or scare them away if you find yourself in a precarious situation. I wouldn't say it's "necessary to eradicate them".

Eradicating ignor-ance would be a much more fruitful endeavour, imo.
highway1 5/31/2014 11:33:39 AM Report

Concerned citizens can be idiots.
right wing 5/31/2014 11:39:04 AM Report

Ignorant

It does not take a rocket scientist to know a couple of simple things...
Any person with experience in the wilderness or a true understanding of wildlife, i.e. a hunter would not approach this bear.
An average person with common sense would not approach this bear.
The wacko animal activist would...they are always getting bitten, mauled, killed cause they want to be one with the misunderstood wild animals.

Want some more proof....

Sam C 5/31/2014 11:57:08 AM Report

fcubed... maybe we can put signs up along the edge of the woods: "No Bears Allowed."

Or, perhaps people can accept that bears -- and other wildlife -- are a fact of life in this neck of the woods. (I have seen moose within the City; once [many years ago] on Albert Street, and once at Sir James Dunn.)

The bears are not invading; we are encroaching upon their habitat. They have always been there, they just had more places to hide.

With more people comes more food sources -- garbage, bird feeders, BBQs, etc.

I don't often agree with IgnorantNortherner, but he has a point -- it's not a case of eradicating bears, but eradicating the misconceptions and irrational fears that people have.

right wing 5/31/2014 12:01:25 PM Report

Here is another one for you Ignorant...you can now be ignorant no more.

http://tinyurl.com/pdtorbh

Not that I like to see anybody get hurt or killed but I do not believe that any wild animal should be held in captivity.
I especially enjoy when one of these Circus animals gets one poke to many with an electric prod from their trainer and suddenly mauls or stomps them to death.
You want to see a lion, go to Africa.

ManUtd 5/31/2014 12:06:35 PM Report

I have seen the 3 legged bear and her cubs at Mapleview. We watched her from the window. She darted into the bush where her cubs were when she sensed danger. There was no handicap as far as speed is concerned. She has adapted and is as fast as ever. She also has a tag in each ear so she has been captured and released at least 2 times.
right wing 5/31/2014 12:06:55 PM Report

...says the two that have no balcony with their apartment.

I love it when folks are commenting on here telling others not to comment...takes a special kind of dumb ass to accomplish this.
IgnorantNortherner 5/31/2014 12:09:38 PM Report

Nothing is more terrible than to see ignorance in action and perhaps this man/woman is an example of such (I certainly do not condone his/her alleged behaviour) but I just think you're inferring quite a bit from a police services "News Release". I mean, they regularly tell us the price of marijuana on the streets is $15-20 a gram which is an outright lie.

I'm not saying what they describe didn't happen, but they have a history of bending the truth, to be certain, and it's best to take all these "news releases" with a grain of salt.

I personally think they're just tired of people calling the police every time they see a bear inside the city.
What do you clowns expect the police to do?

I wouldn't approach a mom and cubbies but you might label me a 'wacko animal activist' for not advocating the eradication of bears in or around city limits but that does not make me such.

right wing 5/31/2014 12:24:59 PM Report

"A concerned citizen placed themselves in significant danger by approaching the mother bear because they thought it was injured."

Inferring ??....none was needed.
Yes the police placed this statement there to fool us like they did with the marijuana....

...good grief, stop smoking the stuff.
debo 5/31/2014 12:29:05 PM Report

That's one thing about you right wing if nothing else, you are predictable. Come out and make a ridiculous connection .... citizen approaches wild animal ergo .... citizen is an animal activist.

And when your "psychic abilities"(good call I N)
are questioned, quick ... change the subject. Look! Here's video of a wacko animal activist .... See, the video (of a different event) and your unquestionable mental abilities are proof positive that the "concerned citizen" can only be an activist .... not just some person of questionable judgement ... For that wouldn't fit into the frame of your construct of the incident nor serve as the vehicle you require to make unrelated commentary.

And since you have no legitimate response to legitimate criticism we get the predictable retreat to some trite and unoriginal comment ... As in dumb/dumber or rocket scientist.

Well, since unoriginality seems to be the coinage you deal in ... here's a fiver for you....

"Next time, make sure your brain is fully loaded ... Before you shoot off your mouth".

That probably won't work for you though ..... mismatched ammunition .....

.177 calibre brain...... .375 calibre mouth.
right wing 5/31/2014 12:44:31 PM Report

debo

You assembled your think tank....
Congrats.

Lets cut to the real issue debo.
This has nothing to do with whether or not the person is an animal activist or not.
This amounts to a simple conclusion, they either are an animal activist kook or just plain stupid to approach a mother bear that of all thing appeared injured.
Which one do you pick. (it's rhetorical)
You don't like me, never have.
That is the crux of your following me and going to such length at attempting to insult me on this site with on an obsessive level.
Kinda creepy but I do love my fans.
You miss me in the blue room don't ya...

...and nobody needs a fully loaded brain when chatting with you debo, hardly fair...you always bring a knife to a gun fight.

Ta-ta...
debo 5/31/2014 1:07:51 PM Report

Actually right wing let us do just as you suggested ... Cut to the real issue.

"Concerned citizen A.K.A. animal activist dumb ass is lucky they did not get mauled or killed".

Perhaps you can point out where you make any mention of the citizen being anything other than an animal activist. Or are you saying you are lacking in punctuation skills. Try and parse your original post anyway you want .... It still reads as the citizen is an animal activist.

All the rest of the filler/ baloney you post in subsequent posts are simply varying "denominations" of your everyday coinage.......
..MOTSOS.

In keeping with your bent for unoriginality .... my response to "Ta-ta"...

See ya, wouldn't wanna be ya!

AlwaysAWinner 5/31/2014 2:36:34 PM Report

>"Rightwing, why would you assume that because someone is concerned for the welfare of an animal that they are an "animal activist"

because no one else is that stupid. the only people I see complain about the spring bear hunt are bored animal loving moms with nothing better to do. these are the type of people who are dumb enough to go try to save a bear that's hurt. they're the same people who feed the ducks and birds, even though they know they stick around in the winter for food and die because of it. "but I feel so bad they need food!"

these people have no foresight, they can't understand that nature has to work on it's own, they think we need to step in and save all these dumb bears.

these are the people who don't want wind farms because they kill eagles and destroy habitats. meanwhile they own a house that used to exist on some kind of habitat, so they're just whining hypocrites

anyone who is against the wind farms because of animal reasons is just stupid. sorry but it's the truth. go look at oil spills and coal pollution and then tell me wind farms are horrible.

Anyone who was raise in Wawa will tell you we had them in our yard everyday
Yes I do agree they can kill
But if you leave them alone they will run from human
But yes I agree if they have their cubs with them they will defend them if you get close and you can be in danger
when they come to town they need food
lot on here are right we build and they have less and less place to be in the forest
They can be dangerous if you surprise them
but they wont come running after you to have you for lunch they are more scare of you than you are of them\
if you see them in your yard stay calm and call Ministry of land forest
I know in Wawa we use to do it and they were coming and get them

.... a lot of people making a lot of assumptions from the words 'concerned citizen'....

The woman was my sister-in-law.

Was on hub trail.
.... daylight.
.... on a bike.
.... never got closer than 200 yards.
.... stayed within visual of the bear at all times.
.... never saw the cubs.
.... called police and tried the MNR.
.... kept bear in sight because she wanted to warn other people who were walking (and did)She also thought the bear may have needed to be put down or tranquilized because of the injury, and wanted to be able to tell police its location.
.... when the bear left her field of vision she left by the opposite direction.

The woman is neither foolish where the outdoors is concerned nor an animal activist.
right wing 6/1/2014 8:23:52 AM Report

Jimssm

If it was your sister-in-law then tell her that if this ever happens again to back away slowly facing the bear.
As soon as you are out of sight get the hell out of there.
Didn't see the cubs. At this time of the year always assume cubs are around.
Do you know how fast a bear can cover a 200 yard distance, even a three legged one. The bike means squat.
Daylight has no bearing.
Stayed within visual of the bear at all times. Why? With all due respect this is foolish just leave the area.
Warn people down the trail once you are safely away, chances are the bear has already left the area.
Finally how do you know that your sister-in-law was the only one to encounter the bear and report it to the police.
It could have been another vegan animal activist kook or plain foolish citizen.

;)
