David O. responds to board policy flap

Wednesday, May 28, 2014   by: Michael Purvis

David Orazietti downplayed Wednesday the significance of an apparent breach of school board rules when Liberal logos appeared on school computers during Premier Kathleen Wynne’s stop in the Sault.

During the stop at Holy Cross Catholic School on Tuesday, computers in one room showed Liberal logos while Wynne and Orazietti addressed media.

Progressive Conservative candidate Rod Fremlin pointed out in a release earlier today that the use of the computers for the political event was a clear violation of Huron-Superior Catholic District School Board policy which forbids use of school equipment for “political lobbying.”

Orazietti said he understands it was campaign staffers who put the logos on the computers and noted the board’s rules are typically aimed at teachers and other board staff.

“I think it is a thoughtful and appropriate board policy, but I also think that Mr. Fremlin is attempting to detract from the announcement - the very positive news of $150 million to support technology in schools for students and teachers,” said the Liberal incumbent.

Orazietti noted that the computers in question were located in a room used for a media availability that day and the logos were not displayed in areas where students were present.

“This was a separate event in a separate room for media only where the tour team with the premier put the logo on a couple of computers as a backdrop, as is customary with announcements being made by any party leader,” said Orazietti.

OrlandoFlorida 5/28/2014 5:27:07 PM Report

Regardless of the Liberal campaign promise they broke School Board Policy. What is the sense of having a policy if it can be broken at anytime. Just like campaign promises can be broken once elected.

REMEMBER THE MCGUINTY PROMISE NOT TO RAISE TAXES!

And boy did he raise taxes and added employee health care premiums to our paycheque deductions, vote liberal and you won't get the premiums reduced or taken off but you will get more cuts to healthcare and a provincial sales tax increase from 8% to 9% making our HST 14%.

Good luck with that orange sign! NDP is why we're voting in June - they don't no why they said no to the proposed budget.

If a breach of provincial election law has occurred then the complaint should be directed to Elections Ontario via the local returning officer.

We should`ve been voting a long, long time ago! I`ve never seen a party get away with as much as the Liberals have and we are the ones who will suffer for years, if not decades to come!

There`s been no breach!

You poor uneducated, tortured soul! Life must be painful for you!

CountryTrapper
I agree!
dadal 5/29/2014 6:05:09 AM Report

And CountryTrapper, The PCs WANT to cut jobs at OLG-possibly even close the local office PLUS make the casino private causing even more job losses. And of course lay off more teachers, cut more Gov public sector jobs by closing even MORE Gov offices and centralizing them to Sudbury, Timmins and Thunder Bay. Try doing your research. I have.

PCs have NEVER done ANYTHING for the Soo even when we voted them in and they were in power. NDP has done more for us than the Liberals ONLY because it was Tony Martin! Sadly I have no use for the NDP leader as she is just as bad as the PCs in her underhanded Parrot ways. Ask her what she will do for the Soo and her reply wikll ALWAYS be how the Liberals are eveil. She never gives a real reply. And Hudack when asked NUMEROUS times what TYPE of jobs he plans to create NEVER ANSWERS. Never!

Go ahead and Vote PC. Then we can all watch as our youth leave the city to go out west for jobs. Then our Seniors here can enjoy the PC created temp and part time jobs at Timmies and other minimum wage places OR our unemployed can enjoy the "work for your welfare check" jobs the Hudack includes in his 1 billion job creation plan.
KIDDO 5/29/2014 8:19:29 AM Report

@ Dadal,
Who are you trying to fool? First off it is your Libberals that has started the ball rolling on privitizing the casino so don't try blaming that on anyone else. Secondly our youth have been fleeing this province for the past decade at record numbers largerly due to your inept libberals.
MrBusDriver 5/29/2014 8:23:08 AM Report

dadal... Well said...
You truly are a rarity on here - someone who actually does their research before commenting.

What I want to know the most in this election, is what the torries and ndp have up their sleeves. What did the torries promise the ndp for causing this election?

Perhaps someone should have showed the ndp what the torries track record is for keeping promises...

I wont say who I'm voting for, all I'll say is *traditionally* the torries are all about cutting services and theyre anti-poor. ndp sends jobs south of the border - if y'all remember when Bob Rae was ndp premier of Ontario, he won Buffalo Businessman Of The Year for all the jobs that left Ontario. Sure, the Liberals are into spending, and what party doesn't have skeletons in their closets...

Just remember folks, if you give up your right to vote, you also give up your right to complain about how things are!!!
streaker 5/29/2014 8:36:49 AM Report

Dadal
I cant remember the NDP doing anything for Sault Ste Marie other than hold hands with the Liberals so they can raise taxes and Hydro, and chase our jobs out of this city, and northern Ontario.
Maybe you forget or were not around when John Rhodes, Derek Holder, Gibertson and the likes were around and the Sault was a thriving community as well as the north.
It was not not the Liberals or NDP that got the four lane highway started east of the Sault.Algoma steel was a high end employer with in excess of 14000 employees
and now down to a bare minimum and sold out to foreign investors as well as the tube mill.
We need the PC's back in power to get the province of Ontario back up and running as a financially responsible province.
And for you Liberal supporters, ask our MNR minister David O. why they are going to raise our recreational fees, license senior's for fishing and tax recreational vehicles with their new found tax system.!!!
ThinkAgain 5/29/2014 8:38:59 AM Report

We are voting because the NPD refused to hand over another blank cheque to the Liberals. Smartest thing they ever done.
Kevin5069 5/29/2014 9:17:10 AM Report

They also down played handing $1.2 billion over to their business buddies for not building gas plants for us.

They're good at the whole 'down play' thing...
Woodwrkr 5/29/2014 10:00:12 AM Report

People seem to forget why the gas plants had to be cancelled in the first place.

It was because the Liberals forced them on people in a spot that was totally wrong to begin with.

Then, when they feared losing their jobs, they made an election promise to cancel what they started.

All at no consideration to the taxpayers.

They don't care what it costs us when they want something, even to the extent of creating new taxes when they promised not to.

At least Hudak is laying his cards on the table by canceling the extra jobs created by the Liberals
asp 5/29/2014 10:04:35 AM Report

Come people of this city get rid of Orazetti !!!!!
Me Myself an I 5/29/2014 10:55:59 AM Report

What people seem to forge is that both the PCs and NDP campaigned on closing the same two gas plants.

So it would have cost us tax payers the same amount of money anyways, just would have been a different government we were mad at.
Woodwrkr 5/29/2014 11:28:41 AM Report

Me Myself

The Liberals started the gas plants, ignoring opposition to them.
You know, because the Liberals know whats best for us.

When they saw the PC and NDP promising to cancel them and their jobs slipping away, they jumped on the cancel bandwagon

The gas plants should never have been located where they were in the first place.

David O is too comfortable now...time to switch it up.
bubba2006 5/29/2014 11:29:10 AM Report

Liberals violated a School Board Policy. The Director of Education and other Board Staff violated the Board Policy. What is the point of having a policy if you are not going to follow it? Are you going to pick and choose who are to follow the policy? That sounds like B.S. to me.

Our province is facing a looming retirement crisis, a potential ballooning of health care costs with an aging population, a development in the North (the Ring of Fire) that has the potential to pump billions into our regional economy ... and Rod Fremlin is worried about what picture was on a computer screen? Woodwrkr 5/29/2014 12:37:22 PM Report

Yes, our Province is facing a debt crisis and kathleen wants to spend an extra 12.5 billion that we don't have...most of it on windmills
