Hopefully , the place will be full and our people in the Soo will get badly needed work.
KDawg 5/26/2014 5:50:21 PM Report

In the past Algoma Steel/Essar hired local contractors to do this type of work.

Is it really that much cheaper to hire a Chinese firm to do this work and have them hold a job fare to hire locals?
joshua_r_b 5/26/2014 5:50:26 PM Report

I already applied online. No response. I'm a red seal welder.

Check out saskjobs.ca

Last time I ran a search there was 292 jobs directly with the title "welder" in it. Honestly, I don't know why all of the skilled people are staying in SSM. With the job market the way it is there, you may as well move to somewhere they are willing to pay you a fair wage and give you consistent work.
Tito 5/26/2014 7:12:48 PM Report

The add makes it sound like there is "new" jobs because of this Chinese firm coming in....truth is they are coming in and looking for new people who can/will work for less and the people who have been doing that work for years are getting pushed aside...for cheaper labour.....when things are "made in China".....we all know what it means....its cheaper for a reason....this firm will find a way in the TFW program to exploit it and bring in even cheaper Chinese workers.....don't be fooled by this it's just the beginning....and its only going to get worse....
itsme29 5/26/2014 7:31:00 PM Report

there are local trade unions with members qualified to do this work...essar is too cheap to hire them. they want to hire people from a job fair for peanuts. I wish the people of ssm would finally wake up and see what this company is all about. local tradespeople are having to travel all over the country because essar wont spend any money and wants to use the cheapest scabbiest labour money can buy...they forget that it was the skilled union labour force that built every mill/building in that place. scew you essar steel

As a recent grad from sault college in the technical disipline. There are little places to make a career in the sault. Hence i'm out western ontario now.
Lleoy 5/26/2014 8:08:39 PM Report

Tenaris hired people from out of town, and one guy fell through the roof almost killing himself, maybe Essar, and Tenaris need to get a couple lawsuits to smarten them up.
Saultguy41 5/26/2014 8:22:31 PM Report

Lleoy, do you work at Tenaris like I do? I thought not so before you make stupid comments like that with regards to that incident get your facts straight and know all the info behind the incident.
Lleoy 5/26/2014 8:45:58 PM Report

Ok Saultguy, then why don't you enlighten us asshole, the local contractor has not had one issue to this day. Maybe I do have more to do with this issue than you think. You sound like a stupid bag licking company man, or manager.
opinionated 5/26/2014 9:24:39 PM Report

The roofing company was from Thunder Bay. That has nothing to do with the safety record, stupid comparison.

Also the last time this job was done on the coke ovens (the one Sinosteel is going to be looking after), it was a GERMAN company that did it.

It's a specialized job, it goes out for tender. Next time put in a bid yourself.
Wisenheimer 5/26/2014 10:25:12 PM Report

Be happy we still have a steel mill .. no thanks to lousy management and greedy unions of the past.
Cities all over N.A. would have killed to have someone take over their bankrupt steel operations.
judoka 5/26/2014 11:35:50 PM Report

Never have worked at Essar, but you would think that they would try and keep the work local.....however, this doesn't seem to be the pattern. Its all dollars and cents. Im sure they skills they are looking for, can be found in the sault, no doubt there. Its just if someone is willing to work for a much lower wage.......
Koss 5/27/2014 1:21:41 AM Report

This work should go to the trade union who has the experience to do the job. Relining a blast furnace is not an easy job. You don't go from getting lawns to bricklaying.
bounder 5/27/2014 6:06:05 AM Report

I hope they fail a that job and no one gets killed.
The last time I was at Essar I witnessed a young man pinned beneath some rolls at the 166 in mill and amateur crane operators who couldn't understand hand signals correctly. The trap having been set by non union workers ,they didn't listen to the orders they where given. I pulled my guys off the job and left, brought tears to my eyes to see this event unfold, a young man nearly killed for cheap labour practices.
yomamaissofat 5/27/2014 8:21:26 AM Report

Anyone local is smart enough not to perform for Essar for fear of not getting paid! Just ask any local suppliers about that!!!
ThinkAgain 5/27/2014 8:54:04 AM Report

See what unions do
seen_your 5/27/2014 8:47:28 PM Report

@koss

My grandfather and uncle were bricklayers, and, to be blunt, you can train a monkey to do that job.
wandering 5/28/2014 1:15:08 AM Report

What a joke many will be happy when this stupid place shut their door
Coo1 5/28/2014 10:17:08 AM Report

Do you guys even bother to read the whole articles on this topic?

Get your facts right... they ARE looking for local people to fill these jobs and NO, not at low paying wages.

AND btw, if it weren't for unions you wouldn't have:

Anti-discrimination rules at work
Overtime pay
Occupational health and safety
40 hour work week
Worker’s compensation
Employment Insurance
Pensions
Public education
Collective bargaining rights for employees
Wrongful termination laws
Whistleblower protection laws
Anti-sexual harassment laws
Holiday pay.

....just to name a few.

If you to want to be anti-Chinese(which, unless you are a pure blooded Indian, you too are a foreigner, genius), you might want to support your unions because they stop what other countries lack.
