Hey Tim! Why won't you come to the Northern debate?

Thursday, May 22, 2014   by: SooToday.com Staff

NEWS RELEASE

CELIA ROSS

NDP CANDIDATE FOR SAULT STE. MARIE

*************************
In the last election, the Liberals couldn’t be bothered to show up for a Northern debate.

This time it’s Conservative Tim Hudak who can’t find the time to debate Andrea Horwath on northern issues.

“Northerners and the issues that matter here are clearly not very interesting to Tim Hudak,” said Celia Ross, NDP candidate for Sault Ste. Marie. “Liberal and Conservative Leaders alike both treat our region as an afterthought.”

“Andrea Horwath is the only leader who has come to the North so far this election to talk about real issues, like jobs, education, hydro and affordability,” Ross said. “There’s been no sign of Kathleen Wynne, no sign of Tim Hudak.”

Andrea Horwath will attend the May 26 debate in Thunder Bay, sponsored by the Northwestern Ontario Municipal Association, Federation of Northern Ontario Municipalities as well as the Northeastern and Northwestern Ontario Chambers of Commerce.

We are so confused about this election, my husband actually said he would vote for the first one that showed up here. lol
ThinkAgain 5/22/2014 12:27:48 PM Report

Why waste even more money flying around the country, hotel rooms, limousine service.

Let them stay home in there own office and use Skype, show that they want to do something good and save a $$$$.

We all say technology is the way of the future but come election time and we all go back 50 years & continue with blame and finger pointing.

The government system as we all know it does not work. It needs to be changed drastically.
IgnorantNortherner 5/22/2014 12:44:52 PM Report

ThinkAgain, if you truly believe that then you can't vote. I don't really think anyone that votes should be complaining, since they voiced their support for this system and get what they deserve with the rest of us held hostage til they wake up.

A vote in this election means you support the status quo, in some form or another and that the corruption and theft isn't so bad that some crony schmuck in Ottawa can't pacify you in some way and make it seem like things aren't as bad as they really are.

"Things are actually pretty good! We're making progress", you might say. These are the only people who should be voting...and no one that dumb should be allowed to vote in the first place.

scottstewy123 5/22/2014 1:10:42 PM Report

Very disappointing. I may have to vote another way ,God help us.
Not even a yard sign in the Sault its like the PC is sleeping. All I know is the Liberials have to go.
ranny 5/22/2014 1:15:12 PM Report

I'll say this again. They don't care about Northern Ontario because we don't have the population and the seats to help them win an election. If we had many seats like Toronto area, they'd be up here kissing up to us.

OMGWTF 5/22/2014 1:16:03 PM Report

Yes an ignorantnortherner has spoken. If you don't like it start your own Party, get the required number of supports, money etc and try to get elected. Not voting means nothing because the only one hearing about it will be youreself complaining about the "system". Change happens when people take action to get involved. Talk is cheap.
Malarkey 5/22/2014 1:42:57 PM Report

Things I want Tim Hudak to tell me about his plan to reduce taxes to corporations, reduce environmental oversight and regulations,etc.....will he make it a non-negotiable condition for implementing the above that (a) ALL the tax money saved by said companies will go to JOB CREATION IN ONTARIO and not one penny will go executive compensation or off-shore; (b) any damage done to the environment by the relaxing of oversight and regulations will be remediated quickly and fully solely at the expense of the company who caused it.....with not one penny coming at the expense of Ontario worker job losses or wage reductions or the taxpayers? I think that's more than fair.
Mr. Poster 5/22/2014 2:14:25 PM Report

I see enough of Hudak on TV...don't need to see him in town. Does he know he has a faceless candidate in SSM?
bulletcards 5/22/2014 2:29:09 PM Report

I think maybe Tim reads the comment section of sootoday, see's what ignorant northerner posts. then thinks to himself, "gee what a bunch of idiots. why bother?". acccording to ignorant northerner, none of us disapointed in the system should vote. Then the 3 people who are happy with it vote and get their way. Good idea ignorant northerner!! DUMBASS!!! You do us a favor and don't vote ever.
ThinkAgain 5/22/2014 2:53:24 PM Report

The name says it all

(Not all of went to the Henry only for Shops)
IgnorantNortherner 5/22/2014 3:20:30 PM Report

I'm not really sure why any of you who can see the system for the cancer that it is are directing your frustration at me...but at least you're frustrated. That's a start, I guess.

@bulletcards, do you think if all but three people were happy with this setup it would continue for more than another minute? We wouldn't come together, identify the causes of the effects we'd all agree are unwanted and then get to work fixing them? I like to think we all want what's best for ourselves and our families but I don't see how anyone who votes could be so naive as to believe all trends to date will be reversed if we can just get those pesky (insert enemy team name) out of office and get our guy in. Why this time?

If you had cancer would you sit back and tell yourself "This time it's different! This time, the cancer will cure itself! It just needs some more time and then I'm sure everything will be alright...."

A parasite grows and grows and gains more power and influence over you until you finally decide to cut it all away or eventually, you, the host, die.

It really is that simple.

only art 5/22/2014 5:06:19 PM Report

Hey IgnorantNortherner,

Your responses are clearly ones that stem from intelligence and cynicism, :) however, your approach could use some work. I like seeing strong responses also but you might want to consider others are entitled to their opinions. Using the word stupid to get any point across takes away from the validity of your response.

I would like to state mine now. I am hoping the people are educating themselves to what is happening and realize that giving up isn't the answer. We have some candidates that might initiate change with further public involvement.

I am also hoping the catch phrase anyone but Progressive Conservatives is catching on considering their answer to our failing economy is to take away money from public service employees which means: Education, Old age pension, Mental Health, Postal Services etc...

If you have started to believe that unions are the problem please remember that unions created safe jobs, equal pay, fair hours etc... if you do not have a union it still sets the precedent for a majority of the things in place that make Canadian jobs safe and decently paid. Take these away and watch what happens not only to the smaller unions but to the employment positions that remain unprotected. We will be devastated as a country. Again please learn as much as you can and vote to the least destructive party. Not P.C. they will ruin us.
I'm In 5/22/2014 5:55:17 PM Report

Is it me or do you Canadians know that we have a Federal Government (HARPER) which governs all of Canada and there is a Provincial government(WYNNE(R) for Ontario, you wouldn't think this by reading some of the posts such as only art's post, cause this is a provincial election and the province does not run CPP OAS or Canada Post. Canada is a great country so read your history on local, provincial and federal governing and get informed to vote for the party that is best suited to your needs, I know the PC's HUDAK will take away every right you have and you'll pay for every service you need in Ontario, Harper is doing it with his majority PC's in Ottawa, wake up folks.
Dictionary 5/22/2014 7:17:48 PM Report

well, THAT'S DISRESPECTFUL TIM!

then again, i knew you were a melonhead. right to work my ass!
IgnorantNortherner 5/22/2014 7:55:34 PM Report

only art, I said "dumb", not "stupid", but point taken.

The word I wanted to use is generally considered more offensive but could be described as a slowness or limitation in intellectual understanding and awareness.

Basically, I don't think living on this planet a certain number of days makes you qualified to vote. Not even close.

You should have to prove your mental faculties and that you would be an informed voter on a regular basis or you don't get to vote....that's how we got in this mess in the first place, imo.

only art 5/22/2014 8:43:17 PM Report

Glad you were able to get the point IgnorantNortherner (I think).

Not sure what difference it makes, be it Federal or Provincial. P.C.'s have already Federally created chaos, and I was speaking to that, but you are right I mixed the madness together to get people's attention and the word out. I stand corrected I will stick to the focus of education (laying off teachers, increasing class sizes, cancelling full day Kindergarten), health care professionals, fire and emergency services. Leaving the other conversation for the Federal election. Regardless, glad we are on the same side.

The point was to look at what the P.C.'s have already stripped our country of, look at what the P.C.'s are saying as a campaign slogan and stand up against it. The party (both Provincially & Federally) stands to strip us of everything we need and have worked for. I hope we don't let them.

watched him on 6 o`clock news today ,said he would finish 4 lane(ing) 69 north of Sudbury,so he`s either very smart or stupid since there is no 69 north of Sudbury ,so he would be keeping his promise to finish that part of it OR that`s why he won`t be up north because he doesn`t know where north is!!
66cherokee 5/23/2014 12:39:30 AM Report

Tonight on TVO, the Agenda, 4 members of all parties were there talking about the high cost of electricity, and how it is driving away companies, and all you have to do is look at Timmins for that. A company closed down, hundreds of people left without any work, and the company went to Quebec where there's cheap electricity. The commentator, Steve Paqin said that some people pay just as much as their mortgage payments for their electricity. The NDP MPP for one of the Toronto ridings said that one of his constituent came in with his January power bill, and get ready for this one, it was for $1400.00 Mr. Paqin also said that electricity is going to go up roughly 42% in the few years or so. The Liberals brought in the windmills and they don't turn when there's no wind, if it's to windy, they are turned off. The Province has paid some of the states in the US to take our power because their was to much. The Conservatives and NDP talked about hooking up to the Quebec and Manitoba power grid. NDP don't want nuclear power, even though nuclear produces more than 50% of the power we now use.
I would prefer to vote for a party that will bring this province back from the deep, deep hole that the Liberals have put us in. They will spend us into oblivion. And then the talk about bigger classes. Well you know when I was in primary school, it was the norm to have 35 kids or more, and that also included special needs, and oh yeah, no teachers aide. In high school, I remember my grade 10 class had 44 students. I got a good education. So I say increase the classes. As for the 100,000 people laid off, well that's over an 8 year span, there will be attrition and we are an aging society. Maybe they should merge the hydro back into one, that sure as heck would get rid of some of the top heavy people.

The headline should read "Hey Cathleen and Tim! Why won't you come to the Northern debate?.
If you are going to pick at party leaders do it evenhandedly.

PC'S don't recognize anything above or west of Sudbury. They don't beleive we exist. His plans of one million jobs and cutting budget is to remove PUBLIC SECTOR jobs such as teachers AND create these MILLION jobs in Southern Ontario. Although what these jobs are remains a mystery and I would LOVE to have asked him in person about them. Not that he would have given a straight answer....
derand2 5/23/2014 10:01:10 AM Report

The Lieberals, despite promising no tax increases hit us with the HST and a big health care tax raising over $10 billion a year. They have ruined the electricity system and Ontario now has the highest electricity costs in North America with another 50%hike on the way. Their reckless spending has almost doubled Ontario debt to $300 billion. We have suffered under the most corrupt, deceitful, dishonest and incompetent government in Canadian history. It is inconceivable that anyone would even contemplate voting for Orazietti unless that voter is connected to his band of misfits or has directly profited from Lieberal misdeeds.
MYPOINT 5/23/2014 2:36:55 PM Report

I believe that the voters of Northern Ontario are getting tired of ALL of the party leaders and their so-called 'promises' for the north which almost always become unfulfilled AFTER the election is over.

I believe that ALL party leaders should have to prove to us northerners that they actually know where Northern Ontario is located in this Province by coming up here to debate the issues which affect us the most.

I believe that I hate what the Liberals have done in this Province over the past decade especially but I am confident that they will once again form yet another minority government in this Province.

I believe that the NDP, although it can be said that they are passionate about the north ( especially during elections ), will never be given a chance to once again govern in this Province again at least for the short term.

I believe that HUDAK will be the absolute ruin for this Province if enough of us vote for him or his party in the next election. You think we have problems with our local water right now ... wait till HUDAK begins cutting 'inspectors' even though he will probably promise to not do so ( using political speak aka lies ).

I believe that ALL party hopefuls in this area should be willing to sign a legal contract with all of us voters guaranteeing us that their party (if it should form the new government) WILL institute some sort of a ' recall ' plan and ensure it is in place ( 51% +1 ) for the next election after this one. Failure to follow this contract should result in them NOT being able to run for office again for 25 years minimum and if they are currently receiving some sort of M.P.P. government pension, they should lose the right to collect same until they are qualified to run for office again.

As always, your views may differ from mine :)
