Expect heavy police presence on Great Northern, Bruce tonight

Thursday, May 22, 2014   by: Staff

Tonight at 6 p.m. members of the Sault Ste. Marie Law Enforcement Community will be descending upon Walmart Great Northern Road for the annual Law Enforcement Torch Run for Special Olympics.

The runners will travel down Great Northern Road and Bruce Street with the final destination of Walmart Station Mall.

The Sault Ste. Marie Law Enforcement Torch Run would like to thank this year’s corporate sponsors; Walmart Canada, Bayfront Quality Inn and United Steelworkers Local 2251 for their generous contributions.

Members of the public are invited to run with the officers on run day.

If you do not wish to run, but want to show your support you can make a monetary contribution to Special Olympics Ontario at Walmart Great Northern Road from now until run day;  your name will be entered for a gift basket draw at that location.

Contributions made by the public will be matched by Walmart Canada.

For questions regarding the Law Enforcement Torch Run or contributions to Special Olympics Ontario, please contact Constable Shaun Beaulieu at the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service (705) 949-6300 (Ext:5304).

Another great waste of time and money for city police. I don't pay taxes so these idiots can run around with a torch!! It's not bad enough if they get in trouble at work they all get paid time off bs.
bulletcards 5/22/2014 2:43:12 PM Report

It's a charity event for the special olympics!!! Are you really that against helping the less fortunate?
CTgasman 5/22/2014 2:45:55 PM Report

Wow hockeypucker, what an idiotic statement!!!

Great to see our local law enforcement volunteering their time and raising money for a good cause.
klmm70 5/22/2014 2:49:40 PM Report

Hockeypucker, WOW we have a winner! The story is about Police presence in the area; but most of all the story is about the Special Olympics. Please stay home tonight because we don't need losers like you down in that area! Stay home and watch hockey!

IgnorantNortherner 5/22/2014 3:23:59 PM Report

There's no way you pay them to do this, right?
It's on their own time, 100%?
TotallyConfused 5/22/2014 3:25:52 PM Report

You're an idiot!

willoweep 5/22/2014 3:48:10 PM Report

I commend each and every effort our Police make to be involved in a positive way in our Community.

we need to stop the "Them and Us" mentality and get more of the we as a Community .

The up coming generation perhaps will have a better attitude than some of the Posters on here ,being exposed to positive contact with our Police Force.

I'm willing to chip in and give these negative Tax Payers the $1.00 this extravaganza might cost us each in tax money good grief!

Tag33&1/3rd 5/22/2014 3:59:29 PM Report

Lol I can't believe that some people are against the police doing something for a charity! I'm dumbfounded! Lol-wow!
itsme29 5/22/2014 4:09:49 PM Report

the big question is....are they on there own time...or are they on my dime... and im pretty sure hockey pucker has something there. the cruisers and equipment used are tax payers. and these clowns will do anything to get out of work!
Snobank 5/22/2014 4:20:00 PM Report

Sounds like both tsme and hockeyslobber stubbed their big toes and did serioous brain damage. Get to a arborist guys.
CBSA 5/22/2014 5:45:45 PM Report

honeypucker and itsme must have served time together.......
whether it's on our dime or not who cares, the cause is for a worthwhile charity.

Maybe they will run for the mentally challenged some day where honeypucker and itsme will benefit because you both have for brains..........
CBSA 5/22/2014 5:46:51 PM Report

The ignorance in some of the comments here is astounding. SO WHAT if some city money is spent for the police to be present for this occasion?

When we don't honour special people, you whine, when we do honour people, you whine.

Just shut up and let the special olympians have their day and fame that they deserve.
eadiecougs 5/23/2014 1:05:29 AM Report

hockeypucker its too bad their are laws not to shoot morons like u ,maybe they should change the laws eh.
Frio 5/23/2014 10:39:26 AM Report

hockeypucker should make himself useful and volunteer some of his time to the police so they can practice with their tasers.
Kweveye 5/23/2014 3:14:24 PM Report

They are just mad cause they didnt get picked for the team.
MYPOINT 5/23/2014 3:41:55 PM Report

I simply can NOT believe the comments made by 'hockeypucker' and 'itsme29'. I know there is free speech in this Country but how anyone with even one brain cell can be against the police VOLUNTEERING their time to help those with special needs is totally beyond me.

This article clearly mentions the names of the corporate sponsors etc. I can only guess that the main reason that the two above named posters are complaining is the fact that they do NOT have even that one brain cell that I mentioned above. This is extra sad because it means that the police who are volunteering for this run are doing so for the above named posters also. Sad but true.

Once again, the police can not seem to do anything right as far as some people are concerned. Sad but true.

As always, your views may differ from mine.

PS.... even if this did cost me a few dollars as a taxpayer, I , like most other mature adults, would gladly accept that extra cost!
rigrider 5/25/2014 3:35:35 PM Report

its funny how people come on here and flap their lips with nothing intelligent said whatsoever and thinking they are hiding behind a screen name ,,well to clue the 2 losers in that even a child with a bit of computer knowledge can figure out your ip address ,so next time you start disrespecting the special athletes who are out there having fun regardless of their disability wonder if family or family friend is on here to see your B.S. comments
