What does $600,000 worth of weed look like, anyway? (5 photos)

Tuesday, May 20, 2014   by: Kenneth Armstrong

Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers showed off a recent drug bust Tuesday, after a routine traffic stop resulted in seizure of almost $600,000 worth of marijuana.

The routine traffic stop occured last Friday on Highway 17 at Fourth Line, not far from the Sault Ste. Marie OPP detachment office, said Baker.

Approximately 84 pounds suspected of being canabis marijuana was discovered during the stop, with an estimated street value of $577,425.

The marijuana was pre-packaged in small bags, vacuum sealed in a larger bag and placed in packing boxes which were in the back of the van, said Baker.

Once stopped, multiple factors led to police suspecting they were dealing with more than a speeding ticket, said Baker.

"Our officers are trained in highway interdiction and know the signs to look for," said Baker.

Although fabric softner dryer sheets were placed in the boxes it is difficult to mask the smell of this much marijuana, added Baker.

Larry Donald Clark of Calgary, Alberta was arrested and charged with possession for the purpose of trafficking a controlled substance, contrary to the Controlled Drugs and Substance Act and appeared in bail court early Tuesday.

Good job in taking part in one of the greatest travesties human history: the prohibition of Cannabis. We are all so much safer now that all of this safe, effective and socially harmless medicine has been taken off the streets of Canada.

@ Chris Audi " Good job in taking part in one of the greatest travesties human history" You have to be kidding me? You have this ranked up there as one of the greatest travisties to human kind?? Get your FKN head off the bong.

Good for the police and I can't believe that someone hauling that quantity of a controlled substance intended for illegal distribution would do something as avoidable as to be pulled over for speeding. Someone somewhere up the chain of command ain't gonna be happy.

RonBes 5/20/2014 2:20:12 PM Report

Just legalize it already!

Fill the public coffers with the tax revenue from all the pot heads and use it to keep our services running smoothly.

Instead, we SPEND money to keep this mostly harmless substance off the streets, and do a bad job of it, I might add; pot is still widely available and the revenue goes to biker gangs and other organized crime.

I seen people get crazier on Whiskey then weed.

Good job one down but 1000 got through but its the never ending war I guess.

The estimated value of the drugs would give the opp a failing mark math class
Lovethenorth 5/20/2014 2:31:35 PM Report

I'll take a pothead over a drunk any day. Potheads are way more mellow! Maybe if world leaders smoked pot together, we'd have way fewer wars.

dadal 5/20/2014 2:35:34 PM Report

I agree

Legalize it and collect the taxes just as the gov does for cigarettes and alcohol. Then legalize and regulate prostitution.

Once you do that, the police will have to do something about the REAL crime in the city IE robberies, crack, etc.

Seriously guys, stop chasing the pot and making it sound like you are REALLY doing police work. While this "moral" city worries about pot and sex, try taking care of the root of our crime. We need jobs that pay well and provide a future. And try going after the BIG crack issues here. Pot people are easy targets which is why our finest make a big stink when they find some.

Or how about we take some of that bounty, deliver it to city council and POSSIBLY if they use it they MIGHT be more productive. They can't get anything done sober.....

Lovethenorth... pothead or drunk, what people do in their own homes doesn't concern me. It's when they leave their homes and become a nuisance in public that is a problem.

And I don't want either a drunk or a pothead behind the wheel.

Weed rules .. I Would of been more impressed if they would catch more child molesters, women beaters, ect then be a american drug worrier/s. Corporations write Canadian laws and that leads to fascism.
Tom_Bom 5/20/2014 3:12:14 PM Report

If they were to take the money they spend on the prohibition and demonizing of marijuana (Which will be looked at as one of the greatest injustices in human history), and were to actually spend in on real crimes such as robbery, assault, you know, crimes in which there is actually a victim, they would be doing so much good. If pot were legalized today, organized crime would be crippled as it is their cash cow.

More than half of Canada has smoked marijuana. Does more than half of Canada deserve to be in cages like the unfortunate ones who get busted for a crime that essentially hurts no one, centered around a plant that hurts no one? It all makes so little sense... so here to make sense out of it for us today is a special guest. A few reputable politicians, followed by Jay and Silent Bob explaining the situation:

i believe in reported cases such as this, the cannabis is taken to essar and burned along with contraband firearms, cigarettes etc. considering cannabis is so widely used i assume plenty is repossessed and kept or passed on to buddies. legalize it!

I'm almost 70 and never used drugs, that said, I considerate what we see here as the largest contributer to the crime we have today and half the cost of our law enforcement.

This prohibition era thinking is what has driven up the price of drugs that in turn involves big gangs, that in turn encourage it's use amongst our children, they fight over 'turf', killing themselves and innocent bystanders, addicts rob corner stores and we see corruption amongst officials.

These laws are counter productive, they're causing most of the problems.

Our law enforcement has not made one tiny dent on drug usage, it's time to heed what history has already taught us.

ok for everyone who says this was a waste of time etc because weed is not that dangerous etc etc .

1) We do not get to pick and choose which laws we obey, it is illegal so if your caught you pay the price. (Should it be legalized? I think so, but until then obey the law)

2) this was not some small time person who grew a couple of plants for his/her own personal use. This was a large quantity, the only purpose for it is to sell. And when its this much product worth big $$$$ you can bet that there is some blood mixed in with it as well. major drug dealers have their hands dirty in lots of other illegal activities (assault, arson, break and enter, Illegal gun possession, murder etc) in order to cover up the growing, selling, money laundering etc of their pot.
ParadiseLost 5/21/2014 3:51:43 PM Report

Well, looks like lots of cancer recovery patients are going to go without eating and sleeping now. Great job!

Many people who use weed for Medicinal purposes now are going to be screwed over. Not everyone wants to go through the bullshit with the government to get their medication, so yes, they will buy off of un-authorized dealers to save themselves the hassle.

People with eating disorders or insomnia in the Soo often prefer to use weed VS pills and other medication that often harm you MORE than weed will.

Oxycotin and perks are legal, meanwhile it eats away at you from the inside out and causes major addiction. But weed? No negative side effects, you just eat more and sleep more. Meanwhile weed is illegal.

Because you know, fuck logic. People can smoke cigarettes legally but can't intake the smoke from a nearly harmless plant.

As stated in the above comments, you'll see more people causing havoc on whiskey than you will weed. But it looks like us supporters for the abolishment of illegality towards weed will have to wait.

I suffered from a bad eating disorder and insomnia in the past and even my doctors admitted that without weed, I would probably have withered away and died. I hope other people can see the benefits of it and learn to accept them.

Anything can be fine when used in moderation or when used properly.

I am not saying booze is good but all those drug is not good neither
For medicine no proof what submitted that this weed heal
I did many research on it yes it does make you feel better because you are stoned
But it does destroy the brain and this was approved by all doctor
For those who will say God put the plant to use it
Weed was use to make bandage to use on a burn..not to be smoke it
Not all stuff that God put on earth is good
You have many thing that is poisonous and dangerous
I know they wont be able to stop it because Peoples are like robot
zombie and believe all that stuff
but I applaud the police force...and hope they can trow more and more of those dealer in jail
