And then there was one (mayoral candidate)

Tuesday, May 20, 2014   by: Michael Purvis

The municipal election’s only mayoral challenger so far says he is backing down.

Anthony Pagnotta, a 26-year-old manager at a business software development firm, said Monday he plans to drop out of the mayor’s race, less than a week after we first reported his candidacy.

“Some circumstances have arisen and for the wellbeing of myself, my family and my acquaintances, I will be removing myself from the nomination for mayorship (Tuesday),” said Pagnotta in a Facebook instant message to SooToday.com.

That leaves incumbent Mayor Debbie Amaroso as the only one vying for the mayor’s seat in the 2014 municipal election.

There is still plenty of time for another challenger to emerge, however, with the election taking place on Oct. 27 and nominations open until Sept. 12.

The Municipal Elections Act allows candidates to withdraw their names and receive a refund of their nomination fee - in this case $200.

Pagnotta told media last week that he was going to run for mayor because he wanted to take action on issues important to you.

He said he thinks people with science and technology backgrounds are underrepresented in municipal politics.

Too bad - he had my vote...!!!

Anyone but Joe's puppet Deb....
Mark E. 5/20/2014 9:44:35 AM Report

Smart move. I would think he put more thought into the idea and came to the conclusion that he is not fit to be the Mayor of a municipality at this time with his limited or zero experience.
Mr. Poster 5/20/2014 9:53:00 AM Report

We need to get Mark Barsanti to run for mayor !!!

I would have voted for you also Anthony.
macgyvr 5/20/2014 10:57:01 AM Report

We need someone with some big ones to run this City before we all end up on the unemployment line.
macgyvr 5/20/2014 11:03:44 AM Report

I hope all goes well for you Anthony.I hope to hear from you in the Next Election.

You have made a wise decision. Try the school board next time. We could use some young blood in our educational system.

SammH 5/20/2014 12:48:48 PM Report

I can respect that you must have other things going on in your life Anthony, but I'm disappointed because you had my vote.
Justin_time 5/20/2014 1:12:59 PM Report

I tend to agree with jonnyc. I would not put it past some in this community to put a threat on the table. Would be great to see a nice young mayor in there with enthusiasm. But last thing he needs is a young family being harassed.
He put his name in to do the right thing for a stagnant city....give it change. But he did the right thing to remove himself if its to keep a family safe and from worry. Joe, know anything about this? Haha kidding....or am I?
Mim 5/20/2014 2:01:28 PM Report

I have no idea why anyone will say this young man does not have enough experience,
By rights he should be running for Prime Minister, At least this young guy is working and running a business ! Justin Trudeau has only been a camp councillor and a gym teacher and apparently people want to let him run the country. Go figure.
I feel sorry for the sault, you guys need positive change.
RonBes 5/20/2014 2:26:22 PM Report

I'm very curious to know the exact circumstances of his withdrawal from the race. It sounds fishy.

The mob? The establishment at city hall? Has he received threats? If so, and the cops won't ensure his safety, that suggests that they're "in on it."
ONNFIRE 5/20/2014 2:48:06 PM Report

You also had my vote Anthony. My god please someone, put you name in to run against Amorosa. This city will be doomed if she gets another 4 years
tosimple 5/20/2014 3:11:17 PM Report

That's to bad to hear. You certainly had my vote. When you see what the council and mayor do with are city you would think they have no experience at all. Would be great to get some young mind's in there..
jayne14 5/20/2014 3:19:37 PM Report

It's a shame he's not running. We definitely need change in this city and I feel like he could have had some good ideas. I hope someone else decides to run because the only way Amaroso is taking it again is if no one runs.
havenesegal 5/20/2014 3:27:24 PM Report

Nothing will change at city hall as long as Joe is there sadly. I really wish some one else would run .I would of also gave this young man my vote to send a message. We need change :(
pruden 5/20/2014 3:49:27 PM Report

Sorry to hear this young man has dropped out of the race for Mayor but Mr. Barsanti definitely has my vote if he decides to run.

Bigpoppa45 5/20/2014 6:48:56 PM Report

To bad he is dropping out. This city is so far behind everywhere else they think they are in first place.
SmAsHed 5/20/2014 7:35:10 PM Report

For the love of God, someone please challenge Debbie. Anthony would have had my vote for sure; we need some young blood and fresh ideas in office!
Mr. Poster 5/20/2014 7:56:53 PM Report

Being Mayor is a thankless job....no wonder no one else wants the job. Some would consider running once Joe retires...or...is Joe going for Mayor again when he retires ???
ThinkAgain 5/20/2014 8:12:24 PM Report

Not enough money in it for me and I wouldn't consider myself one of Joe's puppets
