David goes door to door

Ontario Liberal budget plan provides best support for Sault residents

David Orazietti, Liberal candidate is spending the Victoria Day long weekend knocking on doors at residents’ houses and in apartment buildings across Sault Ste. Marie to listen to local concerns and explain the highlights of the Liberal Budget, which focuses on creating jobs in the Sault, further strengthening health care and improving education support.

The provincial Liberals introduced a budget that received wide ranging support focused on creating jobs, growing the economy and making strategic investments in Northern infrastructure.
Unfortunately, the Hudak PC’s and Horwath’s NDP decided that having a costly election is more important than moving forward with a long-term vision for Ontario’s prosperity.

"Our campaign is focused on key items highlighted in the 2014 Budget, including a 10-year plan for the economy focused on improving health care and home care for seniors, strengthening the local economy and improving Northern infrastructure, such as 4-laning Highway 17," said Orazietti. “The provincial NDP claim they have a plan for Ontarians and yet they have failed to explain what they are going to do even though they triggered a costly election over ten days ago.”
Specific Provincial Budget initiatives to support Sault residents include:
Jobs and Economy:
  • Establishing a new, 10-year $2.5 billion Jobs and Prosperity Fund that will strengthen Ontario’s ability to attract business investments and support quality, well-paying jobs
  • Investing over $295 million over two years for the Ontario Youth Jobs Strategy to help young people gain the skills and experience to obtain meaningful employment
  • Continuing to support economic development in Northern municipalities through $100 million in annual funding for the Northern Ontario Heritage Fund Corporation (NOHFC)
Helping Ontario Families:
  • Creating an Ontario pension plan that cost-effectively builds on the Canada Pension Plan (CPP) in order to enhance the retirement savings of Ontarians
  • Increasing the Ontario Child Benefit (OCB) to $1,310 per child per year, and indexing the threshold to inflation, which doubles the amount of the benefit since being created
  • Expanding access to health benefits such as prescription drugs, assistive devices, vision care and dental care to approximately 500,000 children from low-income families
  • Reducing auto insurance premiums by 15% by August 2015
  • Putting consumers first by strengthening consumer rights and protection legislation. The government has already enacted legislation to reduce cell phone bills and is developing standards and regulations for home inspectors in the province
Health Care:
  • Since 2003, health care investments have increased by 68%
  • Investing an additional $750 million by 2016/17 in home and community care services, including $270 million this year so that Ontarians will have access to the right care at the right time, close to home
  • Increasing the hourly wage for Personal Support Workers (PSWs) by $4 over the next three years
  • Since 2003, education funding has increased by 70%, Providing an additional $11 billion over the next ten years for elementary and secondary education infrastructure
  • Investing $150 million over three years in new technology and learning tools in schools, so that Ontario’s schools remain the best in the world

  • $269 million over three years to increase wages for Early Childhood Educators (ECEs)

Public Infrastructure Investments:
  • Investing over $130 billion in public infrastructure over the next ten years, with a focus on hospitals, schools, transit, roads and bridges
  • Creating a new $29 billion infrastructure fund that specifically dedicates $14 billion for improvements to Northern and rural highways, including 4-laning routes such as Highway 17
“Our budget makes investments in key areas, such as health care, education and public services that Sault families rely on in their daily lives,” said Orazietti. “In contrast, Hudak’s PC’s are promising to begin by instantly cutting 100,000 public employees, which will result in local job losses and Horwath’s NDP have no plan to move Ontario forward."

He came directly to my door. I asked him about the cuts to the ODSP, for people on disability, and he essentially dodged the question and blamed it on the city.

David, in order for me to want to vote for you, you have to show a little bit more compassion for the disabled and vulnerable people in our province.

It seems to me that the writer of this story is a supporter of this party. Every time anything is mentioned here about David O they go through the entire speil about how they were offering so much in the budget 'but it wasn't supported by the NDP and PCs blah blah blah David is the greatest blah blah. What happened to impartiality in the media. The fact is Dave has done little to nothing for this community it is time for a change, plain and simple. Ontario-the highest taxes in the country, Ontario-the highest un-employment rate in the country, Ontario-the worst health care in the country???? pretty obvious, their track record speaks for itself
Gurpy 5/19/2014 9:30:28 PM Report

The Liberals have no problem making cuts to odsp yet, they willingly fund sex change operations out of the public purse!! Seriously, is it more important to care for someone who is not pleased with their gender BEFORE caring for those who are not able to work and support themselves??
Now all Liberals will be required to embrace pro-choice? Isn`t David O a Catholic? Italian name? No? David O, feel free to come and visit me so I can help you find the right way before it`s too late! Don`t worry, I won`t burden you with my tale of woe that didn`t even cause you to bat an eyelash 7yrs ago. You are safe! I`m not hard to find. I`m serious! Come and visit me.

David was very good at handing out money that this province really doesn't have. The recipients were not all that worthy in some cases. However...having said that...I think he will be re-elected. The NDP have no platform yet and the Conservatives are afraid to show us what FREMLIN looks like.

I wish someone would come to my I have something to say about utility bills charging more in delivery charges then usage amount charges, about using northern Ontario natural resources and selling it all to the US then charging us Northerners astronomical prices. Taxes and more taxes on income on everything you buy with the little you have left, about cost of living sky rocketing and wages frozen, the list goes on and on...come to my door please!

There is nothing wrong with David. The party is flawed. Where do you begin? Look at your PUC bills. We have the highest electricity rates in the country. Look at the taxes deducted off of your paycheck. McGinty lied and the result is far less take home pay. Green energy? B.S. We pay the United States to take our solar electricity and we pay the carpet baggers who installed the crap. This is deducted off of your electricity bill. The party has ruined Ontario's economy...let's not forget the Southern Ontario gas plant cancellations. There will be 100 years passing before the taxpayer pays for this garbage. David...nothing wrong with you. The Liberal Party has wrecked the consumer's paycheck, taxes, and is inept. Get out.

Well I certainly wouldn't want to be a politician subject to the scrutiny of everyone and in particular, Soo Today posters. Those who think one person or one party can somehow change the world and meet all your expectations are simply delusional. Those whose expectations including meeting all your wishes, demands and ideologies or feel your wrath are selfish and uninformed.

I have neither love nor contempt for politicians. But I do have contempt for those who blame others for their own circumstances. Be the change you want to see.

How quickly we all forget... scandals were a hallmark of the last Tory government... Ipperwash, Walkerton and the Kimberly Rogers death to name a few. Hudak was part of that government. You think he is going to somehow ride in on a white horse now and fix everything by laying off more inspectors and public servants and cutting social assistance rates. I prefer a government that has built a new medical school, getting more people family doctors. I prefer a government that has built a new hospital and given the Sault state of the art equipment for that hospital. I prefer a government that has built new elementary, secondary and post-secondary schools in the Sault so that we can all get a better education. I prefer a government that has closed cole mines and increased renewable energy in our province so that even if we are paying more for electricity now, we won't all get cancer in 20 years.

Nice try Backtothe90s.
Premier Harris rebuilt the province after a decade of mismanagement by Peterson and then Rae. He made the tough choices and didn't buy votes with taxpayer money. He told Ontario what he would do and delivered on it. When he left office, Ontario had the most prosperous economy in Canada and it was the envy of U.S. border states.
Now we have the most troubled economy and fiscal mess in Canada and have become a Have Not province begging for Ottawa to bail us out.
This Liberal gov't has engaged in a level of corruption, deceit, lies, cover up and incompetence unparalleled in Canadian political history.
You must be connected to it in order to find some rationale of defending it.
Mr. Poster 5/20/2014 9:46:36 AM Report

As much as voters seem to hate the Liberals...I do not hear much love for the NDP nor the Cons. When voters finally get to vote I predict another Liberal minority .Hudak scares voters.....Horwath has yet to lay out her platform....too busy being critical of others.

derb222 5/20/2014 11:21:34 AM Report

Here are the facts about the Liberals

-increased debt 114 billion in 10 years
- current dept is 281 billion and increasing by close to a billion each month
- As of today each person, including a baby, owes $20,800 each
- 585 million gas plant scandal for 5 seats
- 50% of tax revenue goes towards government salaries and unions
- Bonded debt is 8.9% interest expense to revenues ( California is 2.8%)
- Bonded dept is 236.6 billion ( California is at 143.9 billion)
- Current debt to GDP is at 38.6% and will be at 51% or more by 2018
So when you read an article about more spending and can see no improvements from past spending it means Liberals will spend with no results and economically this insanity isn't sustainable.
If we vote the Liberals back in many people will need to leave Ontario because it simply won't be affordable.
They have increased government jobs and cost more, talk about improving highways that are not maintained as it is, have less front line medical staff. ( I know cause it took over a year to see a couple doctors to solve medical issue that I ended up solving myself)
I also am not a fan of any of the parties but have to vote for my families best chance at life in this beautiful province. Ontario requires cuts and streamlining the systems with less government and more private sector jobs.

LSARC 5/20/2014 4:16:33 PM Report

“Our budget makes investments in key areas, such as health care, education and public services that Sault families rely on in their daily lives,” said Orazietti.

Some calculate that the debt would have been building by $23,782 a MINUTE if the budget had passed, that is if they followed through on promises; that would have meant credit downgrading and ballooning debt servicing charges so possibly a damned if you do damned if you don't dilemma.

The Liberal government has no credibility anywhere, not even Horwath trusts them, the numbers just don't make sense. At this point anyone taking cash from the province better be giving value for money because it is as close to stealing from future generations as anyone wants to get.

“In contrast, Hudak’s PC’s are promising to begin by instantly cutting 100,000 public employees, which will result in local job losses..."

Look closely at this illustration of deceit, and watch for stuff like this in the future. Perhaps Mr O is in fear for his own job but the only other people who should be worried about immediate termination would be the public service upper echelon on the Sunshine List, particularly those in the OPA. And why would you not fire enablers who have cost taxpayers millions throughout the "green"energy swindle?

The rate of attrition in the public service has been calculated at 5% a year and that is where Hudak has said most of the job reductions will be found...

Who is circulating"scary" stories, who wants to manipulate you and why? Follow the money. Many of the scandals have been exposed.

Not voting at all is a vote for the status quo, that is essentially what the NDP did and the Liberals just kept racking up debt.

Unscrupulous people prey on the weaknesses of others, greed and ignorance being the greatest, be on guard for our land and our
children. Cut and paste the link below for an interesting assessment.
