Bargaining at Tenaris going well, says union head

Thursday, May 15, 2014   by: SooToday.com Staff

Tube mill employees have given their union the go-ahead to call a strike if necessary as they bargain for a new contract with Tenaris.

Members of USW Local 9548 voted 98-percent in favour Wednesday of granting their bargaining committee a strike mandate.

The company and union are 12 days into bargaining to replace a contract that expires on June 1.

David Richie, USW Local 9548 president, said he couldn’t speculate on the prospect a strike will materialize.

He said bargaining is going “fairly well” but is in early stages.

“We haven’t even started talking monetary yet,” he said.

is as follows .....

No matter how tough the language is when your new contract is ratified, IF that little toad HUDAK gets elected, you can tear up your new contract because HUDAK has promised ( publicly ) to ' gut ' most union contracts.

Your only hope is to try and make sure you get out to vote during this upcoming election and you do NOT vote for HUDAK. To do otherwise is to put your new contract into the garbage pail and go back to begging for any new benefits or pay raises of any kind during king HUDAK's reign over this Province.

As always, your views may differ :)

The word for today is "demented".

I know Dave Richie but not Tenaris Management. Dave will do the best he can for his members, thus avoiding a strike.
Good luck to both sides.

Hey koolaid I take it you could not get a union job with benefits and a good pension and are just jealous of the people who work union and stick together for what they believe. .. F##K HUDAK.... I am a union man myself and my quality of life has never been better

Sorry nondestructive, I am one who voted in that strike mandate so I know what it's for and as for koolaid maybe he can bump the guy from the corner of Bay and Andrew and squeegee windows on cars as it seems to be at his education level.
Koolaid 5/15/2014 9:32:50 PM Report

That's funny.. the first thing you uneducated animals say, is that I am jealous. LMAO that's what a moron would say, because they have no better of a comeback. I am just thinking it would benefit society if the unions weren't hogging all the jobs and forcing companies to hire union workers at outrages wages. If the wages weren't so high for union workers, the companies would hire more workers , thus getting them off unemployment and welfare.
Koolaid 5/15/2014 9:34:42 PM Report

vote for HUDAK !! Vote For jobs for your fellow man.. Don't be union hogs !!

Koolaid...

"If the wages weren't so high for union workers, the companies would hire more workers , thus getting them off unemployment and welfare"

Where have you EVER seen a company do this ? If wages weren't so high for union workers, the company would simply hire the same number of workers and have a higher profit. That's what stockholders would demand.

By the way, I've never been in a union, in case you're wondering.
grumpy guy 5/16/2014 7:42:55 AM Report

Jimssm I agree with you totally. Koolaid give your head a shake. You actually think they will hire more people if union employees wages are cut... And you call me a moron. Look in the mirror. Jack a$$

Years ago a real good Union President told me that "the Company has no heart to bleed or ass to kick" The workers have to look out for themselves.

jade4 5/16/2014 11:04:09 AM Report

Hey back4more..since you seem to be so educated, maybe you should get a job, or a better one and cancel your account. For all you other haters, maybe if you put as much effort into upgrading your skills as you do criticising those who have them, you would be able to apply for some of these great union jobs that pay very well, with benefits! No need to reply to this as I won't be reading it anyway as I have better things to do...like go to work!
And yes, it's a union job!
Wisenheimer 5/16/2014 11:32:36 AM Report

What in the world has Hudak got to do with a private contract between Tenaris and the USWA ??
6 fan 5/16/2014 12:37:19 PM Report

Hudak plans to gut the middle class by busting unions and creating 1 million low paying jobs , he believes by cutting wages company's like Essar and tenaris will double there work force, what a f**king joke lmao that's just more profit for them to steal and send back to India and Mexico . Unions built this nation and with out them we will be just like India and Mexico rich and poor , I just if you are poor now and have no job or ambition to get a job , because there jobs out there , you don't care , but I have always had a job and worked my way to a good paying union job with no post secendary education , and I like to be able to have a life outside of work , and know that when I'm older I will have a pension to live on
Koolaid 5/16/2014 12:50:30 PM Report

I hope the workers go on stike at tenaris, & they all lose their jobs to scabs from india and china lmao. Then they will be sorry they took their $20.00/hr labour job for granted !!!

MYPOINT 5/17/2014 9:01:54 AM Report

is as follows ...

I simply can not believe some of the posters that I read on here from time to time. By now everyone must have heard king HUDAK say that he was going to create a million jobs - ok so he neglected to say that they were MINIMUM WAGE PART TIME jobs that he was talking about. There are some who are saying that king HUDAK was only going to slash and burn the public sector union contracts. I did NOT hear him say that in particular. What I DID hear was him saying that he was going to 'gut' ALL union contracts ( not his exact words of course ) after he got elected. There was no doubt left when he made that statement.

It is quite obvious that there are some on here who have never held a union job and for the most part, they are simply jealous because others have a union job. My advice to them is to keep trying to get one and sooner or later, you MIGHT succeed in getting one for yourself. Of course, when or if that happens, you must immediately refrain from making those ridiculous statements about unions being the cause of so much unemployment in this Country.

Unions have fought for employee rights because decades ago most of the larger companies were treating their employees in the worse possible ways. For example, making them work very long hours each day, not giving them proper lunch or other breaks, firing them for no reason, and the list goes on and on and on.

I was a union steward in my younger days and I am fully aware of how unions try to get the best possible things for BOTH the company and the employees. Think about this for a minute ... No union in it's right collective mind is going to ask for so much for it's members from the company that it ends up putting the company out of business and forcing all of it's members to look for other jobs! To do so would effectively cause the union itself to go broke which means that it could no longer support any of it's other members who may be out on strike at some other company.

Therefore, let us use a little common sense when posting, and let us concentrate on listening to ALL of the candidates in the upcoming election and finally, let us make a wise decision as to who we truly want to represent us for the next four years. I do not think that is a lot to ask from everyone - or is it?

As always, your views may differ :)
Tito 5/17/2014 10:39:54 AM Report

Hey Koolaid, not everybody wants to work for minimum wage like you.....people want to better their lifestyles for their family....you and hudak think people should be happy just to have a job....
Saultguy41 5/17/2014 4:42:05 PM Report

I say this to all the union nay-sayers out there, just remember when your child is having fun at their family night at their school when they are playing on the inflatables or when a family member is at the ARCH or Group Health center, soup kitchen or any other charitable organizations.Union people lime those in the USW always give back to the community. As for not needing skills to work at Tenaris, I wish I remembered that when I was serving my apprenticeship and writing my trade test. When I was hired on I never cared about the wage, I cared about good medical coverage for my family and live the rest of my life with dignity when it comes time for me to retire so if you are ever fortunate to get a good union job then lets hear you bitch about it.
