NEWS RELEASE

DAVID ORAZIETTI CAMPAIGN

************************
Provincial Liberal Record Shows Strong Support for Essar Steel Algoma

Liberal candidate David Orazietti met and discussed local issues with workers at the gates of Essar Steel Algoma early this morning in order to hear first hand from local workers and ask for their support in the Provincial Election, which is Thursday, June 12.

“Essar Steel Algoma is a vital part of our community and region and I will continue to work at the provincial level to help achieve long-term stability with initiatives, such as our Northern Industrial Electricity Rate Program (NIERP) saving the company approximately $35 million over three years and helping to protect jobs,” said Orazietti.

“Economic development and job creation are high priorities, which is why our budget contains a $2.5 billion Jobs and Prosperity Plan to support local businesses and create good-quality jobs for Sault residents.”

The Liberal government has a strong record of support for Essar Steel Algoma, which includes:

  • The Northern Industrial Electricity Rate Program (NIERP) to assist the region’s industrial electricity consumers with $360 million over three years is to be extended. The program reduces electricity costs by as much as 25% for major employers such as Essar Steel Algoma, Tenaris Tubes and Flakeboard Ltd.

  • $300 million in 2004 in provincial funding for pension support and more recently assisted with pension restructuring to provide the company with greater potential for long-term stability

  • The province provided Essar Steel Algoma with a 20 year power purchase agreement that allowed the mill to build a $135 million co-generation facility and sell power back to the provincial grid

  • The 70MW cogeneration facility is reducing Essar Steel’s reliance on the provincial power grid by approximately 50% on average and reducing the company’s nitrous oxide emissions by 400 metric tonnes per year, helping to protect thousands of local jobs by improving the mill’s competitiveness

  • Essar benefits from the province’s expanded Apprenticeship Training Tax Credit, which since 2007 has provided approximately 150 apprenticeship opportunities for local workers to gain important training and skill development in areas, such as mechanical and electrical maintenance, crane repairmen, hoisting engineers, HVAC technicians and electric motor systems technicians

Great photo op!
Mr. Poster 5/15/2014 2:32:44 PM Report

Liberal candidates must be prepared for an onslaught of negativity when out campaigning. There are a lot of angry voters out there. Wear a hard hat David !!
ranny 5/15/2014 2:44:30 PM Report

The differences between David and Tony. David actually did something and got things for the city. Tony just did a lot of talking.
6 fan 5/15/2014 2:48:59 PM Report

I can tell you this , you don't want Hudak and the PCs in power , he is a nut job , no govt will be even close to honest or perfect but I'm putting my vote with dave and the liberals , better to dance with the devil you know then the one you don't
Mr E 5/15/2014 2:50:23 PM Report

lol ya ok.. Dance away with that devil. Liberals will be thrashed soundly.
MYPOINT 5/15/2014 2:56:57 PM Report

is as follows ...

OPEN QUESTION FOR DAVID ORAZIETTI

If I give you my vote, will YOU see to it that some sort of recall method is put in place for the next election?

That is a simple question and I KNOW that either you or one of your campaign people are reading the comments from this article.

As always, your views may differ :)
johnnyc 5/15/2014 2:58:04 PM Report

I'd rather support the NDP or Green Party, but since the only way to beat out the PC's is to vote Liberal, David, you have my vote.
KIDDO 5/15/2014 3:01:42 PM Report

6 Fan, By voting Liberal you are condonng every lie and scandal that has come out of that goverment. I can agree that David has done some good work for this city. Unfortunatley his party as a whole has buried us. That and he can not admit any of his paties lies and scandals only tow the party line is why I can not give him my vote.
streaker 5/15/2014 3:10:31 PM Report

Thanks David for the restructering of algoma (essar) and taking the cost of living away from pensioners from here.
I could not support the liberals on all the lies and rediculous spending over the last ten years.Especially with the green energy act driving our electrical cost in Ontario to be the highest in north america. Generating minimal power which we dont need now that you chased all the manufacturing out of province with this enormous electrical cost.
ssm101 5/15/2014 3:20:49 PM Report

You know who would get my vote is someone that could actually create long term jobs. Attract some industry to Sault Ste Marie to support the steel plant and all local business.
ThinkAgain 5/15/2014 3:40:07 PM Report

I refuse to support any scandal, good bye Liberals.
steelworker 5/15/2014 3:42:43 PM Report

David was scouting out our gas plant for generating power. When he reports to Wynne she will shut it down.
Jessica_Rabbit 5/15/2014 3:51:12 PM Report

This is a party that won't assist people with Cancer and Cystic Fibrosis with their high medication costs, but will put a $$ Million+ into fighting pig diarrhea. They need to get their priorities straight.

pastoutla 5/15/2014 4:30:16 PM Report

Davy O this is a kind of a kick in the face to the voters!!! As our rates for electricity are sky rocketing (due liberal incompetence)and you got the ignorance to brag about a 25% decrease for ESSAR???
lostdog 5/15/2014 4:31:44 PM Report

liberals..you never learn..no matter how high taxes get and jobs are lost you keep voting for and atempting to sell your liberal doctrins...they're ruining this province and the blind followers keep on following...anyone who votes liberal deserves every thing they get
mosquitos 5/15/2014 4:53:35 PM Report

Vote PC and clean up this mess already!
ti-guy 5/15/2014 5:12:36 PM Report

I agree with pastoutla and streaker....the liberals cost too much....
Twistinwrenches 5/15/2014 5:44:50 PM Report

If you ran your houshold the way the Libs run our province you would be living on the street.Time to face the facts and let adults run the place. If not all of our children will have to leave to find work.
little jerry 5/15/2014 6:04:50 PM Report

You want to talk about lies and scandals, and I'll add hatred towards anyone not in big business! Remember Mike Harris?
soowat 5/15/2014 6:38:50 PM Report

Jessica_Rabbit

Unfortunately, there are more pig farmers, slaughter house employees etc than there are people with C.F. or Cancer. When making out their priority list all political parties count potential votes before they decide what to fund. It is wrong. It is morally reprehensible. However a few thousand happy pig farmers are of more value to the party in power than a few hundred sick and dyeing people
derand2 5/15/2014 6:41:12 PM Report

Northern industry is getting $360 MILLION (Essar $35m) why? Because Orazietti and his incompetent colleagues destroyed our electricity system and triggered skyrocketing rates that put 750,000 manufacturing jobs in the grave. Every day another Ontario company or more announces they're either closing or moving to the U.S. Buy this time next year, the job losses will approach a million cause electricity rates are going up another 50%.

Meanwhile, smiley David O dreams about his fat teacher pension and his even fatter MPP pension. He ought to be thinking about how his gov't is borrowing billions to hand out electricity rebates so the full rage of what they done with electricity doesn't explode in their face.
diggie 5/15/2014 7:28:26 PM Report

I remember Mike Harris!! Hudak is very similar in his stance. Also, David is a Cabinet Minister, and I think that is valuable for our community. He is getting things done for our community. Don't forget Mike Harris' government - it was tough on the middle class and brutal on anyone struggling. Not everyone is an entrepreneur or small business owner or sustained on inherited "old" money. Liberals and NDP coalition? Anyone but Hudak!
shju 5/15/2014 7:35:02 PM Report

Lets see, vote NDP and give welfare raises non stop like the 80s and put us into a record debt.. no thanks. Vote PC and get nothing except high taxes and nothing being spent on infrastructure... no thanks. Yup I am voting liberal once again as they are the only ones to spend some money north of Toronto. We haven't had this much construction of new buildings in the past 30 years. Vote Liberal
Powerwise 5/15/2014 7:45:21 PM Report

I'd sooner shoot myself than waste my time with a bunch of mentally handicapped steelworkers.

Steelworkers represent what's wrong with the west: obese, overpaid grunt labourers suckling the union teet.

Nowhere else in the world would you see these types of people making the wages they do in the west. This is why countries like China and India are overtaking us in every way imaginable.

A vote for Liberal is a vote for a bleak and unsustainable future. the Conservatives get my vote for sure.

sweetwill 5/15/2014 8:18:09 PM Report

Job creation eh? local jobs? Has anyone seen an updated list of employees at Essar. I don't think this government has helped 'local' employment rates. A significant amount of the new and recent hires are new to the country. Also the co-gen, what a joke, Essar sold it back to themselves and the profits from that go straight back to India. Wow thanks for all your help Dave!
Hinkle 5/15/2014 8:19:37 PM Report

Hey Greg you look as bright as your buddy Davey.
Now I really am amazed at how the socialist and entitlement minds keep bring up Mike Harris's years as Premier. It's been approx. 20 years now and they keep resurrecting issues from that time. Just to let these folks know that Mike Harris did exactly what he said he'd do and he won with a majority vote.
There was no billion dollar scandals ie: gas power plants, orange medic, wind power projects (built by an offshore mill manufacturer) and there are so many more.
Did you Liberals know that your hero Dalton allowed the tax payers to pay for sex change programs and surgery... that money could go to cancer, heart diabetes and so many more illnesses and diseases. Not to mention the seniors.
Oh yes, remember the OLG spending abuse right here in the Sault... salmon planked salmon for lunches etc...
Wynne put a stop to the Ring of Fire development in Northeastern Ontario which would have created hundreds of well paying jobs.
When the NDP were in power, Bob Rae had Ontario on the brink of bankruptcy now the Liberals buried us in a deficit that they want to even add more to.
Come on folks, wake up and put the Liberals out of power.
The PCs at least made a stand and are stating what they will do to give Ontario a financial recovery.
Steelworker Unions have kept the north behind in all those years encouraging their members to vote NDP and now Liberal.
Well let's make June 12th WynneFree and give the PCs a chance to bring Ontario back up to it's past reputation as a thriving province and not a have not province.
KFM 5/15/2014 8:20:39 PM Report

Hell of a coice we have isn't it. As long as the PC's don't come to power we will survive. Let Hudak lead and we will drop as low as all the states that have gone right to work. Everything will become low paying jobs reducing spending sending companies elswhere because the general public has no pocket money to buy anything.
pastoutla 5/15/2014 9:36:47 PM Report

Ehh Davy don't forget to mention the 27 MILLION given to the past owners of S.M.P(avery-henson-porky-acton).All wasted tax payer $$$
diggie 5/15/2014 10:00:30 PM Report

Hinkle,
Are you blind to the fact that 99% of the wealth is held by 1%?

Good paying jobs with union solidarity is certainly not Hudak!

Unsustainable? Yeah, right. Maybe we agree to disagree on the political spectrum.

Good education, healthcare, and less of an authoritarian state is my Canada, and it is NOT Conservative, fellow citizen of Ontario, Canada, the have province. What we don't need is Big Brother control of Hudak.
Boomer4771 5/15/2014 10:16:08 PM Report

Hudak spells HITLER.. No vote for that IDIOT.
swirlbird20 5/15/2014 10:38:14 PM Report

People never seem to get it, it doesnt matter whos in power, every party has there strengths and weaknesses, my opinion whoever is in power provincially we need to have that party here locally as we do currently. If we have an NDP rep and its the Conservatives in power nothing gets done for us. Im not a David O supporter by any means but its much easier to be a voice and get things accomplished when you are battling with the provincial party of power rather than against it!!!
steelworker 5/15/2014 10:55:04 PM Report

If David O wants I can put a good word in for him at H.R. After they lose the election Davy might be looking for a job even though he isn't qualified to work at Essar.
I'm In 5/15/2014 11:19:44 PM Report

Hinkle who brainwashed you, you obviously believe everything you hear. When HARRIS was in power he took from the middle/poor working class and gave to his rich friends that's why he lasted 1 and 1/2 terms, its the poor/middle working class that makes an economy thrive, well the rich wright everything off and get big tax breaks. A vote for PC's is a vote for a recession wake up.

Steelworker no need to worry David O doesn't need a job at ESSAR he is a teacher by trade, so he has that pension and his MPP pension cause he has over six years nice try though.
Firefly7 5/15/2014 11:30:13 PM Report

The Liberals have done enough damage to this province - maybe we should vote to match the Federal government for a change. Think we need a new municipal government as well - someone that shows some pride in this city & cleans it up & fixes the streets instead of wasting taxpayers hard earned money. Look at the garbage along Queen St. before Gore St. - pig sty other cities are so much cleaner. Never mind the new buildings or construction where we don't need it - fix the streets that are full of pot holes first - does anyone know how to spend money wisely in this city - let's vote for them.
