We've got another candidate for mayor . . .

Wednesday, May 14, 2014   by: Michael Purvis

Sometime over the last few days, a new name has appeared on the list of mayoral candidates for the coming municipal election - Anthony Pagnotta.

Who is this relative unknown who plans to challenge incumbent Mayor Debbie Amaroso?

Pagnotta tells us he’s a 26-year-old delivery manager at business software development firm Webfilings who is sick of being an “armchair activist.”

“I’m taking this as an opportunity to make a difference in this town, so I thought I’d step up and run for mayor,” said Pagnotta.

The Algoma University computer science graduate said he hopes to represent youth, who he said often complain about issues like potholes and brown drinking water but don’t make a serious effort to change things.

He said he also sees people with science and technology backgrounds as underrepresented in municipal politics.

“There’s a lot of scientists in our community, there are a lot of computer scientists in our community and I don’t think a lot of them are actively involved in our politics, other than possibly voting,” he said.

Pagnotta said he has some political experience from high school and isn’t a complete stranger to council chambers, having attended “very few” council nights.

Pagnotta said he has a masters in computer science from University of Western Ontario and manages engineers at the Webfilings offices in the Sault and Saskatoon.

“I’m interested in making a difference in the Sault. I feel like my skills and enthusiasm for delivering change can be beneficial to this town,” he said.

The municipal election takes place on October 27 and, so far, Pagnotta and Amaroso are the only candidates to have filed their papers, according to the city’s website.

Altruism is alive and well! I now know whom I shall vote for. It is better to vote for one who thinks he can rather than the status quo.
MYPOINT 5/14/2014 5:48:08 PM Report

is as follows ...

Congratulations Anthony ... I think you will get a lot of support in this city because many, many people are totally fed up with the current Mayor and Joe's puppets that we have on council at the moment.

As always, your views may differ :)

Here`s your chance for Change,
Elect this young man who`s Campaigning.
guard1 5/14/2014 8:37:33 PM Report

Congratulations Anthony and good for you for challenging Amoroso. There is nothing written in stone that says you need political experience to run for municipal office. You can learn on the job. Just look at the young Kyle Dubas the greyhound GM and how successful he has become. He also had to learn on the job.
yomamaissofat 5/14/2014 9:23:19 PM Report

You have to be kidding!!!
So all of you are voting for this guy because of this one article which basically says:

I have no experience
I hate potholes
I love Canada Day
I visited Council once in elementary school

I hope you all get what you deserve! And I'm writing down every one of your names so that I can remind you that you voted for him, should he win, and you are all bitching and complaining!!!

This kid is a joke. He doesn't know up from down. Wait till you hear him talk, then see if he's your mayor.
Great news 5/14/2014 10:22:18 PM Report

Heard that a present councillor will be declaring his desire to run for mayor in next month or so. At least we will have a choice.
db64 5/14/2014 10:32:22 PM Report

Very interesting Anthony, good luck.
For you nay sayers, there are many well wishes on this page and it is because all who know or worked with this fine young man know his capabilities and heart. This would be a very interesting turn of events, for the good. I don't mind Mayor Deb and think she is doing a fine job, but I would have to say Anthony will get my vote - their age group just keep reaching for the stars and continually exceed our expectations and having our city in their hands would definitely be a look to the future. This race just got very interesting. Inspiring.

First thing to do FIRE FRATESI., Save the city lots of money...

I'll be voting for this young man. Change is good. We are well over due for some young and fresh ideas for this community. As for you nay Sayers... Oh well.. Let's see how it goes.
dadal 5/15/2014 5:19:06 AM Report

Boomer....the Mayor cannot fire Fratesi. The Late Mayor John Roswell would have if he could have, trust me.
dadal 5/15/2014 5:27:27 AM Report

As much as I had a great chuckle from this and was ready to jump on the "Vote Pag" bandwagon, changing Mayors isn't the solution. ALL of city council AND "Uncle Joe" would HAVE to be replaced to start any progressive thinking in City Hall.

The Mayor is only one vote in a decision. Council has to back the Mayor up. And too often we see the same backward thinking faces side with Uncle Joe to refuse change or expansion in order to benefit their friends' local companies or plans. Our City Hall needs to have everyone given the boot and bring in young fresh new people that WANT to see the Sault double in size with more than call centers and retial jobs.

I do believe that our current Mayor HAD the desire for change. Then discovered if you are trying to move a concrete wall, you give up and just lean on it like she has been doing.

So OUT with the Old Boys Club and in with the new at ALL levels. And that includes Uncle Joe and all he has appointed at City Hall!!!!!!!!!
MarcHandthefunkybunch 5/15/2014 7:39:02 AM Report

As long as Fratesi is still there, nothing will change. There are bad people in this world, then there is him. He's in the same boat as Tony Martin, two people who did nothing for this city except steal millions in taxes.
Alison SlapNuTShot 5/15/2014 8:31:37 AM Report

FINALLY. WE NEED TO GET young blood into politics that can represent a more modern approach to things.

The soo has been living in the past forever now. Get with the times.
BrianTheDog 5/15/2014 8:54:57 AM Report

I heard Mayor Deb's people got this kid to run to split any vote with a real candidate that is soon to be announced.

Mark E. 5/15/2014 9:23:37 AM Report

I am hoping everyone on this site is not serious on voting for this individual. It would be terrible for the city. I love his enthusiasm but he is not fit to be Mayor. I have never met him, spoken to him but experience is a necessity for this post. Direct your energy to maybe run to represent your Ward to gain some experience and in many years down the road, go for the top spot.
Come on people. Anyone jumping on this bandwagon, give your head a shake, this is not a Mickey Mouse job.
TFinn 5/15/2014 9:41:34 AM Report

lol ….. Sorry ..we don’t need a clown folks, this city needs leadership which comes from experience and the kind of experience I’m talking about can only come from life long experiences over many years . Just because people are unhappy with their current Mayor doesn’t mean anybody will be able to jump in and guide a city into the future. Take a look at what this person has offered thus far in his very short life span and what he can offer now. That list will be very short. Sorry…. but if Sheeple want someone with little to no experience ….then you will get what you get. We need someone that has the connections, and wherewithal to achieve things that will help this city move forward and attract future investors and businesses, that can strengthen our infrastructure as a whole.
S.M.A.R.T. 5/15/2014 11:13:22 AM Report

I like the way people are dismissive of something new while the old, no matter how ineffective (unless we're talking attending golf tournaments) is somehow construed as a tried and true sure thing. Some people are not intrepid enough to come out of the rain and I believe that our current mayor is one of those. The kid's got my vote if only to make the statement that the status quo just won't do. The old vacant stare is truly becoming an offensive, irritating turn off!
NP-complete 5/15/2014 11:42:20 AM Report

I have much respect and applause to the ambition and determination for this young candidate. While I'm sure he has all the right intentions and would definitely bring a new perspective to the position, his severe lack of experience is far too much to ignore. It takes a lot more than high-school "experience", and recently becoming a manger of a handful of people at a company in order to be mayor. I agree that it would be more appropriate to consider running for a Ward counsillor position first, and work your way up. Bringing up the hot topics of potholes and brown water to lead the platform is a good strategy which will definitely sway votes, but voting in this direction for the sole purpose of change or being impressed by age shouldn't be suffice.
ssm101 5/15/2014 1:18:37 PM Report

I think this young man has just simply applied for the only job that may keep someone his age in the Soo.
ranny 5/15/2014 1:35:08 PM Report

It's nice to have a fresh and new ideas..... but pot holes should not be a major issue for the Sault. Jobs should be on the top list. Inviting company and business to move into the city. Not hot topic or year problems... ex. pot holes after a long winter.
Alison SlapNuTShot 5/15/2014 2:13:20 PM Report

I got a really crazy idea.... lets invest money into things that make the city money:
Example of Things that Make Money (assets):
- businesses
- developments
- natural resources
- complexes, arenas and venues

Examples of Things that Cost Money:
- hub trail
- pump track

Get rid of the red tape and people might want to start a business here

Oh noooooooo, you are not going to write down my name are you? Now you got me all stressed and worried my friend. When you tell JOE F. that I have said some nasty things about him, what do you expect JOE F. to do about it?

The current Mayor started out with a good plan and good ideas ... I will give you that. Then she became Mayor and soon learned that unless JOE F. approves of things that council wants, it does NOT happen. - simple and to the point!

As for the majority of the rest of council, we all KNOW that they are just puppets who allow JOE F. to pull all of their strings. ALL of us have seen this time and time again. - simple and to the point!

Personally I am still wondering how much and who he had to pay off or blackmail in order to get that job? Until that is disclosed to the citizens of this city, please remember to write my name clearly for JOE F. when you report to him hahahahahahahahaha.

As always, your views may differ :)
