Multiple bear sightings in the city

NEWS RELEASE

SAULT STE MARIE
POLICE SERVICE

*************************
Since the first of May the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service has received eleven complaints of bears in yards.

The majority of the calls have been in the more rural or wooded areas of town.

In the early morning hours of the 13th of May, police responded to a call of a bear in the P-Patch area.

The Sault Ste. Marie Police Service would like to remind residents to take the necessary steps required to reduce problem bears.

The bears are looking for a food source.

By following these simple steps you can reduce the chance of attracting bears:

  • store garbage in steel or airtight container, inside a storage area that is not accessible to bears
  • put garbage out the morning of garbage day, not the night before.
  • do not leave pet food outdoors
  • thoroughly clean outdoor bbq grills after use
  • fill bird feeders only in the winter months
  • do not put meat, fish or sweet food (including fruit) in your composter
  • remove any fruits and nuts from tree and shrubs and pick up any that are on the ground
  • keep meat scraps and fish parts in the freezer until garbage pickup day

If you see a bear and there is no immediate danger call the Ministry of Natural Resources Problem Bear Reporting Line at 1-888-514-2327.

Often the bear is just passing through, and if it does not find a food source, it will simply move on.

If the bear appears to be threatening, persistent or aggressive, call the Sault Ste. Marie Police Service immediately at 911.

Put garbage out the morning of garbage day, NOT THE NIGHT BEFORE.......

Some folks still DON'T GET IT!

drypaint 5/14/2014 8:38:41 AM Report

We have a place in Goulais and I've personally seen 11 bear since Friday. Last night was a momma and 3 cubs, which I hear is rare. We take all necessary precautions but it still plays havoc on the nerves knowing that there are allot of them near by.
Frio 5/14/2014 8:39:13 AM Report

Yes like the people who have lived on the the same street for years where Monday is garbage day, and when Monday is a holiday they still put their garbage out on Sunday afternoon to be scattered around the neighbourhood for 2 days.
kodak11 5/14/2014 9:33:18 AM Report

Quit trapping and start killing!!!
theprotector 5/14/2014 9:49:13 AM Report

LOL, yeah cuz that will work, well I guess it will for that particular bear. Unless a) you miss or b) you wound a bear and it runs away
eadiecougs 5/14/2014 10:04:53 AM Report

chichimawn 5/14/2014 11:14:36 AM Report

@drypaint. Do you live near the dump? 11 bear since Friday, is a lot of bear. Or Maybe you have a large food source on your own property? Take some good pictures!
kodak11 5/14/2014 11:30:34 AM Report

ON TOP OF THE FOOD CHAIN.......AND PROUD OF IT.......bears fall under the NIMBY catagory.
derek 5/14/2014 11:41:39 AM Report

Lets trap them and send them to the folks who want to stop the bear hunt.

They seem to want them!

Easy solution for us northern folks!
eadiecougs 5/14/2014 11:54:00 AM Report

no wonder why a more smarter race will never visit this planet its full of moron's and we destroy things which get in our way and the planet well as u can see the planet is slowly destroying us so we are at the bottom of the food chain.
Roger3 5/14/2014 12:24:02 PM Report

I came face to face with a bear and thankfully she was just as scared as I was. She went one way and I went the other way. I was very lucky there was no babies around. I am so for the bear hunt. She could have come my way.
B Boy 5/14/2014 12:29:58 PM Report

@derek - There are many people here in the Soo who are lobbying against the bear hunt.

There's a large con-hunt northern presence.
SimsDrum 5/14/2014 12:56:06 PM Report

More smarter?? Impossible!

People are hilarious! Bears in Northern Ontario? No way?

What are the bear attack statistics for this area? Is there any? I would be interested to know.

What are the statistics of humans attacking humans in this area?

Compare them and see what we should be more worried about.
beanie 5/14/2014 1:45:39 PM Report

@kodak11
Technology put you on top of the food chain. Your ignorance puts you at the bottom of the human race.
B Boy 5/14/2014 2:25:06 PM Report

@NJL - there have been bear attacks in Ontario in recent years.
May 2007 - Southern Ontario woman attacked (non-fatal)
Sept 2005 - Chapleau - Man was attacked, woman was killed

Attacks are few & far between but the nation wide occurrences seem to be increasing.

According to the Globe & Mail, research has also indicated that many of the attacks weren't chance encounters but the result of prefatory behaviour primarily by males (only 8% were mother bears).

For the record, I'm not an animal biologist nor a proponent of the bear hunt as I haven't formed an opinion yet.
B Boy 5/14/2014 2:29:35 PM Report

According to the Animal Alliance, the SSM police service is reporting that bear occurrences are trending downward.

http://www.animalalliance.ca/wp-content/uploads/2014/02/SBH-Media-Release_04172014.pdf

I would question if this is true data, poorly captured data or that a percentage of frustrated people have just stopped calling the police.

iamtc 5/14/2014 4:48:06 PM Report

Frio are you a male or female
drypaint 5/14/2014 5:06:12 PM Report

@chichimawn ..this is on the four seasons rd stretch. No dump. 2 bear friday night near the end of rd. 2 at a known bait site, Monday night 2 cubs and a momma, last night 3 cubs and a momma. Might be the same family as the previous siting and one last night a few doors down. 11 sightings since Friday. Not sure but they all seemed different. From what I've heard they are well fed through the summer by the people on mission rd that net fish on superior to operate a fish stand and they throw the guts and stuff into the bush to feed the bears.
tosimple 5/14/2014 5:09:18 PM Report

zr800 Has the right idea!!! Buy all means protect the family.. If that means giving the bears lead pill let it be!!!

is it legal to put our garbage in our gun safe, does anyone know??Do they make a solid steel garbage can?Why do these bears come to town to look for garbage anyways??Is it possible, there`s too many bears, morons!!!!
Bad Dawg 5/15/2014 12:23:26 AM Report

so some think we should shoot every bear within the city limits or cross our property.... they have as much of a right to be here as you or I, but since you mentioned it why do I have to live with stupid people?? they are a danger to my family. Where do I apply for the idiot (Homo-moronic-stupidious) hunting tag?? Is there going to be a limit, because I hope not. With a lot of them running their mouths on here, we are becoming over run by stupid thinking people!!
zr800 5/15/2014 9:53:31 AM Report

to all you cry babes just remember that years ago the bears were roaming the land your house is on .. you cry babes had no problem buying the land your house is on knowing that bears and other animals live in that subdivision.. there are to many bears with less food because your house is where they once ate .. so suck IT UP.... AND shoot....
