Former firefighter to run for PCs

Wednesday, May 07, 2014   by: Staff

Rod Fremlin Nominated as Ontario PC Candidate for Sault Ste. Marie

Ontario PC Leader Tim Hudak congratulated Rod Fremlin on his nomination as the Ontario PC candidate for Sault Ste. Marie.  Hudak commended his dedication to making northern Ontario a more attractive place for business investment and job creation.

“Rod understands the priorities for a brighter future and the urgent need to create the private sector jobs that will lead Ontario back to prosperity,” said Hudak.

“While the McGuinty-Wynne Liberals continue to deepen Ontario’s economic crisis, the Ontario PC Party has a plan to create new jobs and rein in government spending.”

“Kathleen Wynne doesn’t care about northern jobs. She’s more interested in saving Liberal jobs in the south than ours,” said Fremlin.

“The NDP aren’t any better. They supported the Liberals over us so they could benefit.  But they are unrealistic, unaffordable and unprepared.  Ontario needs new leadership and a new direction to make the necessary decisions to get our economy back on track.”

Fremlin noted Tim Hudak’s Million Jobs Plan will:

  • Produce more jobs and increase take-home pay through lower taxes and less debt

  • Ensure affordable energy that will create jobs, not eliminate them.

  • Train more skilled workers to meet the demand in trades, and help young people find good jobs.

  • Increase trade with our neighbours.

  • End the bureaucratic runaround that inhibits job creation.

Rod Fremlin retired in December 2011 after 28 years with Sault Ste. Marie Fire Services and is currently a building contractor.

Born and raised in the Echo Bay region, Fremlin is married to Cynthia and has three children.

He is also a member of the Matthews Memorial Hospital Association board of directors.

Do you have an original thought Rod?
ThinkAgain 5/7/2014 1:58:06 PM Report

Lets start by slashing the over paid politicians/senators salaries & reduce there pensions.
Stop the foolish spending (commercials).

Anyone in politics should have a political university degree & not involved with any special interest group/s.

Thats just a start
BT1979 5/7/2014 2:16:28 PM Report

You help keep daycare open no problem you got my vote along with thousands of other parents involved....and yes I agree...SLASH OFFICIAL PENSIONS AND WAGES...its out of control now....
mpa 5/7/2014 2:17:08 PM Report

How about someone with economics or law education and experience. How does the PC plan to win votes when you are going against a lawyer and a professor. Running a province is not like running a contractor business, its alot more involved.
justsomeguy 5/7/2014 2:27:40 PM Report

Keep in mind that previous MP's & MPP's who were lawyers and professors that were voted in didn't really perform all that well.
Mr. Poster 5/7/2014 2:27:51 PM Report

Well...somebody had to run !!!!!
inferno 5/7/2014 2:34:08 PM Report

Congrats Rod... he will work hard!
arizonagryphon3 5/7/2014 2:46:27 PM Report

I find it totally ignorant to say Mr. Fremlin has no chance against a lawyer or a professor. He is a smart, hardworking man and I know he will go to bat for the little guys! Have a conversation with him before making obtuse statements. Good luck, Rod!
KFM 5/7/2014 2:47:32 PM Report

Sounds like Rod is going to be Hudaks back pocket buddy, repeating the same old Conservative BS just like Hudak did and still does to Harris's wants. Hudak is still a puppet for Mike!
I'm In 5/7/2014 3:03:38 PM Report

If it's Rod Frelim or someone else running for PC party, that's the rich man's party and the Frelim's are wealthy, but if your middle class watch out cause they will nail you to the cross, you will pay for every service this province offers and your provincial income taxes won't go down. Look at your cost of living in the past 18 years did you get any breaks from them so-called deficit reducers (not) PC's and Liberals and did your taxes go down so don't blame the NDP cause they didn't have any power to rule.
Bill_the_Cat 5/7/2014 3:28:18 PM Report

I'm in: except the dippers got their wishes from this current budget and the previous. They supported the government fiscal policy.

This government fell on scandals--and the general feeling that the Premier ought to be an elected position.

Horwath missed her chance, though. Had she gone last year, the NDP had momentum and money, with the polls on their side. Now? Not so much.

Another Liberal minority methinks.
JUSTANOTHERNAME 5/7/2014 3:30:42 PM Report

@mpa who is the lawyer? Ross is a professor and Orazietti was a high school teacher. It's a fire fighter against 2 teachers.
Bill_the_Cat 5/7/2014 3:31:25 PM Report

Who's the lawyer? David O was a teacher, unless I'm mistaken. Did the Greens select a lawyer?

We can do worse than elect _fewer_ lawyers to the Legislature.

Whatever else, Fremlin ought to do well. Good luck to him.

Mr. Poster 5/7/2014 3:36:11 PM Report

Look on the positive side. At least we have 3 local choices. In the past the Conservatives brought in a virtual unknown to represent the party. It is all good....we have choice.Lets make sure we vote !!!
Bill_the_Cat 5/7/2014 3:48:04 PM Report

Amen Mr P
Alimentary 5/7/2014 4:07:45 PM Report

Really. A career PUBLIC firefighter with a large pension who happens to run a business (remember before retirement at the same time as being a full time FF.. go figure eat and sleep and watch the game at work on our local tax dollars then go to work for yourself all day and repeat...nice).

Now he expects us to believe that private sector jobs are the answer?

Turncoat at most. If he pulls the 'I'm a hero' card that will surely invoke much nausea.

We have three poor choices.
KiwiOnASticK 5/7/2014 4:24:11 PM Report

Same 3 old parties beating the same 3 dead horses, using 3 local pawns to try to get votes. No wonder half of the population doesn't bother to vote on election day.
Mr. Poster 5/7/2014 4:24:58 PM Report

Hudak put out the same congratulatory bulletin for both Jib and
Gater 5/7/2014 5:16:58 PM Report

Mr Poster nailed it.
Make sure we vote.. Its a right we have paid dearly for in Canada.

Walk the talk not just talk the talk
mac headrick 5/7/2014 7:19:20 PM Report

Congrats Rod anyone who puts their name forward in politics is to be commended.

It is good to see the Conservatives choose a local resident.

Rod spent his youth on Calabogie Road apparently about a mile and a quarter north from a famous (in his own mind) football player.
irishfey 5/7/2014 8:00:04 PM Report

Well, i guess hell did freeze over ,lol Congrats Roddy!! If anyone will fight hard for the middle and lower class it will be Rod, and if he don't, well i have some good photos of the " good ole days" that will make him do it ,lol Maby the Fremlin family have a few bucks, but i'll tell you that they all worked damn hard to get where their at. Nothing like a good country boy with brains to get the job done!!!... Way to go Roddy, proud of you!!
irishfey 5/7/2014 8:11:31 PM Report

BTW Rod,, i want an increase in my pension and my gas bill lowered ,that will make me happy for now ,lol
derand2 5/7/2014 8:32:38 PM Report

A 10 year old operating a lemonade stand would get my vote over Orazietti. At least he/she is doing something economically constructive and a far less risk to furthering the ruination to our future than Orazietti and his incompetent/criminal libs have done. He/she will not be accomplished at arrogance and lies. That person will look to build a better more hopeful Ontario rather than sucking more MPP pension income out of taxpayers.
Twistinwrenches 5/7/2014 8:42:57 PM Report

Time to let adults run our province . Not immature socialists! Remember the problem with socialism is that you will run out of other peoples money.
Mr. Poster 5/7/2014 9:23:19 PM Report

I am sure David O is a nice guy but I cannot get by the fact that he did not speak out against all these wrong doings perpetrated by his Liberal party. By remaining silent he chose his party over his constituents. Some will say he had to follow the party line...but...that is a cop out. He should have stood for what he darn well knew was the right thing to do.If he was happy with his party then that makes me feel better about not voting for him this time.
Norm 5/7/2014 10:01:18 PM Report

Good for Fremlin. Wynne could at least apologize for her boss wasting millions of taxpayer dollars. Instead she sues Hudak for him telling her to take some responsibly for her governments foolishness.
saultresident 5/7/2014 10:58:56 PM Report

Sorry Rod, but you are judged by the company you keep. Tim Hudak is dangerous for the common people and your brother Vic... well let's not even go there! If I ever considered voting Conservative, this just sealed my vote.
Mr. Poster 5/7/2014 11:09:24 PM Report

The Cons can never win with Hudak...why cant the Con party see that??
irishfey 5/8/2014 12:26:57 AM Report

saultresident...You really are a piece of work you know that ?!!!.. Yes we are judged by the company we keep, but only to a point. Rod Fremlin is not going to be in " anyones " hip pocket i can assure you of that and if it's anyone that can turn the P.C Party around to help out the low to middle class it would be this Man. Born with a silver spoon in his mouth? i don't think so! The whole Fremlin Family has worked from the ground up to acquire what they have today and even Vic with his generosity to the Soup Kitchen and a whole lot more to the Sault residents. Sounds to me like you have a personal vendetta with Vic. Fine, take it up with him but don't be minimizing what Rod can do for the P.C Party and the Soo. Maby clean out your own closet before you start with others! If that's how you judge in an election, then no one would ever get voted in. Could Rod now retire and sit around and watch the games all day, yes he sure could but he has decided to help out and do more with his life to make life better for others, at least give him credit for that! I hope you like crow, as i think you will be eating a lot of it in the future!......
right wing 5/8/2014 7:10:44 AM Report sure can give em a spanking.

I like that.
saultresident 5/8/2014 8:10:19 AM Report

So the Fremlins are your claim to fame? How sad for you!
Mr. Poster 5/8/2014 8:10:23 AM Report

I am just happy we have 3 local people to choose from. let the race begin!!!!
justsomeguy 5/8/2014 8:21:57 AM Report

Interesting that the Soo complains that there's no PC candidate, then we get a candidate and the Soo complains about who it is.

KIDDO 5/8/2014 8:59:30 AM Report

Can anybody out there help me understand a Libberal's mind set? Surely no one can be happy with all the scandals and money this goverment has wasted the past eleven years! You may not agree with what the other party's platform or views are, however we can not just sit back and let theses crooks do what they will with out any retrobution. Send these politicions a message that we will not tolerate it. You can't just sit back and worry about the ' what if's ' if the P.C's or NDP's get in, something has to change. If it is that bad after four years kick them out and vote in the liberal's again.
Mr. Poster 5/8/2014 9:22:20 AM Report

MANY WILL AGREE with you. If ever there was a time to vote "for change sake" it is NOW.
Rick T 5/8/2014 9:32:41 AM Report

Way to go Rod
I hope you do well
I know you will work hard if you get in
CCR 5/8/2014 9:53:19 AM Report

Congratulations to Rod Fremlin for standing in this election. It is never easy to put yourself into the public eye and to sustain the inevitable petty criticisms, especially those that are unfounded and anonymous. I appreciate that Rod wants to set this Province on a better path.
We are seriously mired in debt with two parties arguing over how to dig the hole deeper. I appreciate that David O. has brought significant dollars to the community to support numerous worthwhile initiatives. I have said on this site before that I would not want to be in his position as an MPP who has done what he can for his constituency, but who is tied to a government with such a lamentable track record of waste and misdeeds. Local initiatives aside, the end has to come when you are a member of a Cabinet that cannot control spending. He should be embarrassed by the gas plant, Ornge, e-health, OLG, green energy, and Caledonia issues to be sure, but to table a budget that proposes $12 billion more in debt in addition to the 120 billion this government has already amassed, bringing total provincial debt to over $260 billion, is unconscionable. Ontario is perilously near to another debt downgrade. This time it will cut very deep into our ability to fund programme spending. Interest payments are already the third highest cost of government spending. An uptick of only one percentage point in interest rates will cost Ontario billions.Private industry (Caterpillar, Hienz, Kellogs) is picking up stakes and moving out of Dodge over high power costs and suffocating regulation.
Ontario and Sault Ste. Marie cannot afford to keep braying for more government assistance for everything from soup to nuts. In fact we need to brace ourselves for a serious discussion about what programmes to eliminate.
This election should not be about the popularity of leaders or about what new spending plan can buy the votes of what special interest group. It needs to be about assessing the failure of the current Liberal government and opting for the only party willing to do the heavy lifting to try and solve our problems. In my opinion that means voting Progressive Conservative.
KIDDO 5/8/2014 10:34:07 AM Report

Well said CCR!!
irishfey 5/8/2014 12:29:15 PM Report

Saultresident.. No, that's not what i'm saying. Actually i vote NDP, but i know that they won't get in so i just might go to the PC this year.. never the Liberals! All i was saying that with Rod running, it will be a breath of fresh air to the PC Party, done with truth and no lies coming from Rod. Someone has to get in so it may as well be an honest person!.... And please, don't bring any vendettas of family members to the poles.

Hey cupcake.. i miss ya " over there".. coming back i hope :)...
chickenlittle 5/8/2014 6:52:21 PM Report

alimentary , really!!! - I would like to see you do the job Rod has done as a firefighter. Maybe they do sit at times, but when called to duty, they are awesome and do jobs no one else wants to do. Easy to sit and bitch, but walk a mile in a firefighters boots..........youd fall FLAT on your face!!! He is a good man and will do a good job for his community.
MYPOINT 5/15/2014 4:02:56 PM Report

is as follows ....

The fact that HUDAK has promised to slash 100,000 public service jobs does bother me a lot. Does anyone remember what happened in Walkerton when Harris was at the helm? Seven people died just because Harris was cutting all kinds of inspectors etc. and those people paid for it with their lives.

The inquiry that arose out of that tragedy made some very important decisions and among other things, the inquiry also found that the cost-cutting government of former PC premier Mike Harris contributed to the tragedy by privatizing water testing and axing Ministry of Environment jobs. HUDAK is a disciple of Harris and he intends to do the same sort of thing.

Please ensure you vote but if you vote for the PC party, you had better start getting your water from the tap on Goulias Ave and 2nd Line because that will probably be the only safe drinking water around. Only a fool would want to have the Sault turn into another Walkerton. ( This is NOT a slur against that beautiful town ).

As always, your views may differ :)
CCR 5/21/2014 3:35:04 PM Report

Mypoint has it a little wrong. Mr. Harris did not fire the workers responsible for the negligence at Walkerton. The plant technicians were not properly trained and were negligent in the performance of their duty. To suggest that reduced levels of hiring or in fact outright firings were responsible for this oversight is simply untrue, and unfortunately this sort of smear does nothing to promote a healthy dialogue concerning the issues of the current political campaign.
