Ready to fight

Friday, May 02, 2014   by: Darren Taylor

Sault Ste. Marie MPP David Orazietti has told he is both surprised and concerned about the Ontario NDP’s unwillingness to support Premier Kathleen Wynne’s minority Liberal government’s budget, which has led Wynne to call an election for June 12.

At the same time, Orazietti said “I and my campaign team are prepared to fight this election.”

“For the past three months the premier had been asking to meet with her (NDP leader Andrea Horwath) and get her input, and she didn’t provide it,” Orazietti said.

“I think it really speaks to the lack of willingness and cooperation (from Horwath) to make the minority parliament work.”

The budget has been described by some political commentators as an “NDP-friendly” budget, much like the one introduced by the Liberals and passed with NDP support in 2013.

Not this time.

“I am surprised that the NDP is putting at risk important investments and initiatives that would benefit the people of Ontario and the people of Sault Ste. Marie by forcing an unnecessary election.”

“I think that’s irresponsible,” Orazietti said.

“I’m concerned because the priorities we believe are foundational pieces to the budget are elements the NDP should be strongly supporting, they are elements that they have repeatedly discussed as priorities, and we ensured these were contained in our budget.”

Orazietti said those elements include the proposed Ontario Retirement Pension Plan initiative, infrastructure funding, money for four-laning of highways (including Highway 17), Ring of Fire support, funding for personal support workers and early childhood care workers, and enhancements for seniors home care.

“All of those things, we believed, would be initiatives the NDP would support. Yet they’ve chosen not to.”

Orazietti said the mayors of Thunder Bay and Sudbury were both enthusiastic about the proposed budget because of Ring of Fire support and infrastructure spending.

Debbie Amaroso, mayor of Sault Ste. Marie, also told Friday that she was pleased with the budget’s provision for infrastructure spending and Highway 17 four-laning.

Orazietti also said labour leaders such as Sid Ryan, Ontario Federation of Labour president, and Fred Hahn, CUPE Ontario president, mentioned that the budget was worthy of support.

Orazietti’s NDP opponent in Sault Ste. Marie in this campaign will be Celia Ross.

Responding to criticism made by Ross earlier Friday in regards to the Liberals deficit budget, Orazietti said “the NDP never ran a single balanced budget in the province of Ontario…I know the point they make about how they have had balanced budgets in other provinces where the NDP has governed, but we’re talking about Ontario with a complex economy and much larger population.”

“The NDP never balanced a single budget (in Ontario)…I certainly do not trust the NDP when it comes to the economy,” Orazietti said.

Orazietti said investments made by the Liberals in regards to Algoma Public Health at Sault College, Algoma University and other infrastructure investments were voted against by the New Democrats.

“That’s been their track record, and our community of Sault Ste. Marie cannot afford to go back to a period when our community was ignored by the NDP,” Orazietti said.

Time for Dave to go so he can taste the crap economy his lib gov has created.
Derd78 5/2/2014 9:28:33 PM Report

NDP wouldn't respond to a meeting, Kinda like He has not responded to Local 4685, All of this is blowing smoke, The Liberals put out a budget that puts money back into the same things they took it away from, I'd say they are trying to save face and kissing a little a** knowing that the first chance anyone gets they will force an election. I have had enough of the Puppet show here in Sault Ste Marie. Celia Ross would be the best choice for our community regardless of what party she was involved with. Keep in mind that we have to choose what is best for our town as well as the province when you go to the polls on June 12th.

David will not win! People want and expect a representative that will take them seriously and ACT on their behalf! David was voted in FOR the people BY the people but did not act on behalf of the people. All he did was ignore us and now he wants us to vote for him? No.

More tax dollars wasted on an election just to put another governing body in to be corrupt!!!WHAT A SHAM(e)!

and just for clarity-Wynne went to the L-Gov to have the writ dropped!-no way that the NDP could see the budget working-I know we can't afford that-good and necessary wage increases for health care works-yes but all the rest??? the Liberals were hoping this would happen-to force an election to see if there was a mandate to continue their corruption

Good for Horwath, the Liberals must think that the average voter is not very bright. The Grits have foolishly spent the taxpayers money now it's time for them to take to the back benches.

Andrea Horwath rocks! -she took the tax payer off the barrel!
MYPOINT 5/3/2014 12:13:56 AM Report

is as follows ...

I just MIGHT vote for Ms Ross in the upcoming election because she would be the lesser of two evils as far as I am concerned. I have heard nothing but good things about the woman although I have never met her in person yet.

David O. must simply GO. We have allowed the Liberals to waste billions of our dollars already and to be blunt, we can not afford to allow them to continue doing the same for the next four years.

There is not enough money on this planet to bribe me with to vote for the PC party simply because I do NOT trust Hudak whatsoever. That twerp has said publicly that if he gets elected, he shall rip up union contracts ( albeit in some sort of legal ( crooked ) way.

The best recourse is a 'recall' method so that we could recall ( FIRE ) any representative we elected if they failed to keep their election promises - no excuses accepted!

Of course, your views may differ :)

PC all the way
rockbanger 5/3/2014 6:04:05 AM Report

Ms. Ross is a well seasoned professional. NDP are the only choice that have a platform.

The red machine is obviously too corrupt to keep.

The blue machine is non existent at this time.

Davie O was a highschool teacher who lucked in and got a provincial MP job as there was no one with the skills to beat him at that time. Now has a nice for life pension he can sit around and brood over how he was so wonderful.

Celia's skills and education far out pace all candidates in the Sault....

Time is now to kick out the fascist liberal government.
Sammy1099 5/3/2014 9:05:36 AM Report

I think they are all a bunch of self-serving crooks and/or incompetent asses. They say they need the nice salaries and cushy benefits/pension packages to draw the best candidates. Let’s see they racked up billions in debt made some really dumb decisions. If that’s the best and brightest this country has we are in deep shit. I guess they are the best at serving their own interest, and we are dumb enough to allow it.

I think we should all put NONE OF THE ABOVE on our ballots. With any luck they will get the hint. I don’t think any elected government actually spoke for the majority in this country, in my lifetime anyway.

Hudak has a point the with regard to ripping up contracts. He is referring to a decade of Dalton using lucrative contracts to buy civil service and teacher’s votes. The province simply can’t afford those anymore. This still isn’t enough to get me to vote for him. With the NDP we will have a workers and unemployed paradise until we go bankrupt. The Liberals will be more of the same shit. I think it’s time for a new party and reforming the election process.
coachkids4life 5/3/2014 12:25:00 PM Report

I hope the people of this province see the writing on the wall here, each and everyone of us can not be as blind and stupid as these governments think we are. It's time to change these politicians once and for all, the Liberals have been raping us for years with their lies and cheating us out of millions year after year, these parties need an eye opener. They keep cutting our services where they count the most the only people making a killing in this province is "THE POLITICIANS' they just keep lining their own pockets but don't give a shit about the people who make this province tick every day, If you dont see whats happening then yes you do fall into the blind and stupid catagorie and blame no one but yourselves. Lets be smart about this election as a matter of fact make it a shocker. Yours sincerly, mr discusted.
