Orazietti urges NDP to support Ontario Budget

Wednesday, April 30, 2014   by: Staff

Liberal Government Supporting Families and Job Creation in Northern Ontario

Today, David Orazietti MPP urged the provincial NDP to support the government’s 2014 Budget being delivered Thursday, May 1.

“Our government’s 2014 Budget builds upon the significant investments we have made in health care, education and infrastructure and represents the priorities of Ontarians,” said Orazietti. “The PC’s have irresponsibly said they will vote against the budget without even reading it, and it remains to be seen whether or not the NDP will support important investments that benefit Northerners.”

Key elements proposed in the 2014 Ontario Budget to date include:

Ontario Pension Plan

The Ontario Liberal government is working towards the development of a provincial pension plan to enhance the retirement savings of Ontarians.

Currently, more than 35 percent of households are not saving enough to ensure a similar standard of living in retirement, and in 2012, 66 percent of Ontario’s workers did not belong to a workplace pension plan.

The government is working with experts from the public, private and non-profit sectors to examine a range of options to help people retire with better security and will introduce pension plan legislation so that Ontarians can better afford retirement.

Multi-billion Dollar Investment in Northern Ontario Roads and Highways

The government’s “Moving Ontario Forward” plan is a new, $29 billion dedicated fund for roads, bridges and highways throughout the province.

In the upcoming 2014 Budget, the government will present further details on its 10-year vision for significant investment in transportation and transit.

Nearly half of the $29 billion total fund would be available for investment outside the Greater Toronto and Hamilton Area (GTHA).

Funding in Northern Ontario would be used to accelerate the Northern highways expansion program, which includes the four-laning and expansion of routes such as Highway 17.

Neither the NDP nor the PCs have presented a long-term plan to fund transportation infrastructure in Northern Ontario.

Significant Investment in Ring ‎of Fire Infrastructure

The Liberal government has committed $1 billion for the development of all-season infrastructure in the Ring of Fire, which will support generations of jobs and economic growth in Northern Ontario.

The Ring of Fire is a $60 billion mineral development which includes the largest deposit of chromite ever discovered in North America.

The province is calling on the federal government to match the funding commitment for this important project that will create thousands of new jobs.

Additional Investments in Home Care for Seniors and Support for Personal Support Workers

The province has announced plans to enhance supports for Personal Support Workers (PSWs) who provide care to seniors and other people with complex care needs in their own homes and communities.

The government has committed to increase the hourly wage of PSWs by $4 over the next three years, and is also setting a new base wage for PSWs that will increase alongside the hourly wage to $16.50/hour by April 1, 2016.

Last year, PSWs delivered 31 million hours of care to 300,000 patients throughout the province.

Additional Increase to the Ontario Child Benefit

The Ontario Liberal government has announced that the 2014 Budget will include a $100 increase to the Ontario Child Benefit (OCB) starting in July 2014.

In addition, the province is proposing to tie future increases to the rate of inflation to help eligible families keep pace with the rising costs of raising their children.

Last year, the Liberal government increased the OCB by $110.

With the proposed additional increase, the province will have more than doubled the original benefit, bringing the total annual amount to up to $1310 per child.

This year’s increase will benefit hundreds of thousands of Ontario families across the province.

“I’m hopeful the NDP will put people before politics and support the government’s plan to balance the budget while continuing to deliver the quality programs and services that Ontario families rely on,” said Orazietti.

The government’s full 2014 Budget will be introduced in the Legislature on Thursday, May 1 at 4:00 pm.

I have no faith in any political party in this province or country. With that said, there was a time I would never even consider voting NDP, yet they have the only leader with any class. The Tories lack all direction and leadership ability. The current group of criminals have transformed a "once great province" into the great rust belt of the 21st Century, far exceeding the collapse of the US Midwest in the 70's.
Change is long overdue, unless you're happy with the increasing burden to your financial well-being.

jonesur right on, time for a change they ruled the roost for too long, didn't reduce the provincial deficit, while the cost of government services went up like health care, drivers licence renewals etc, most of which was privatized. Should be like the USA, eight year max terms and recall them when they screw up.

#1- where do you expect to get the money?

#2- Is it a balanced budget?

MYPOINT 5/1/2014 7:08:03 AM Report

is as follows ...

ALL political parties are afraid of allowing the voters in this Province OR Country to have a real vote. By this , I mean that if they were serious about our vote counting for real, why not put in some sort of 'recall' plan so we can FIRE those politicians who lie and steal and cheat by making ludicrous promises that they actually have no intention of keeping after they steal our vote!

My spouse is an RPN ( nurse ) at the SAH and her wages were frozen for the past 3 full years. The rumour going around the hospital is that although her contract expires in October, there is absolutely no increase in hourly rate being even considered at this time. I fail to understand how they can expect people to accept this sort of thing when these damned politicians waste a ton of money ( we are talking BILLIONS ) on things that they cancel just so they can ensure that one of their own gets re-elected in a different area.

I used to have faith in our Government but no more folks. Until we have some method of recalling these liars and cheats from Government when they fail to keep their election promises - I shall continue to have absolutely NO faith in any political party in this Province or Country!

Your views may differ of course :)

Billions of our $$ wasted on the gas plants cancellation, ORNGE air ambulance, e-health, green energy my aunt's fanny, and hydro through the roof!!

Now, there's billions being promised in the liberal "BUDGET"? As a former schoolteacher Mr. Orazietti you may be familiar with something called a dictionary. Look up 'budget'. It isn't just about expenditures. Note the reference to 'revenues'. One is supposed to offset the other.

Wynne and her liberal lap dogs want to buy an election with YOUR MONEY!! In fact, money that you haven't even got yet, whether through wages or pensions.

Sort of reminds me of that lazy, useless uncle who invites you to dinner at the best restaurant in town and orders the most expensive things on the menu, along with the $300 bottle of wine and at the end of the evening...hands you the bill!!

When you put families at risk, Food/Rent vs Hydro Bill. That's drawing the line.

Even with the removal of the hydro debt fee, the hydro company will find a way to scam extra money. Plus you allow the hydro company to raise their fee over the next 3-4 years.

You almost added a tax fee to Northern Ontario people for Toronto highway use.

ORNGE project, don't get me started.

You say you're in touch with the people but you are not. If you knew your party leader was at fault, why didn't you say something? Most politician will vote Yes because their party leader told them so. The people voted you to be their voice and represent the people, not being a Yes person because your Party Leader told you to do so. I'm not going to blame this technique on the Liberal but it happens to all party.
ranny 5/2/2014 11:48:57 AM Report

@I'm In I agree with you, we should run our election like the USA. Why should we allowed a party leader to vote who they want to run the country or province. Just because they've received the most party vote. We should be allowed to vote who we want to run. Give use your candidate and we will vote who's fit to run. Example... If the people voted a CP as Premier or Prime Minister and Liberal wins the most seat. So be it. It'll force the party to work together.
