Im Glad the new City Police office on Gore st is open 9am - 5pm daily makes sense to ME. Those hours of operation have done wonders for the daytime because nothing happens and their presence has kept the night stalkers to the dark hours
Sammy1099 4/25/2014 8:29:12 AM Report

I guess I’m not the only one who finds a 9-5 police building stupid if the object is for crime prevention. I don’t think that move was about a crime prevention strategy, more a job security strategy. Makes about as much sense as the armoured car purchase. Who approves this shit?
JediMindTrick 4/25/2014 8:31:13 AM Report

@ daz

The Police Services building on Gore (in my understanding) is not even open yet. Renovations need to be done yet to the building. Plus, the '9-5' hours of the services office is not meant to be a dispatch centre.
Its meant to increase some presence of police in the downtown area as well as offer social assistance and connection to various community programs. It is an 'Outreach Centre'...not a detention centre.
other_buddy 4/25/2014 9:10:37 AM Report

What does the Police office on Gore St. have to do with Wellington West? How would that have prevented this robbery?
TFinn 4/25/2014 9:20:52 AM Report

These late night stores are targets ...if the owners don't spend the $$ to have security cams(very cheap now) and night time cages/booths then they'll remain targets. It’s only making the work environment safer for the employees ...forget about the merchandize. One day something bad will happen, the owners will have no defence against law suits , if they do nothing knowing that similar things “have” happened in the past involving late night convenience stores. Just saying..!
MissKika 4/25/2014 9:42:51 AM Report

When i lived in Florida in the 90's, most convenience stores/gas stations locked their doors at 9 or 10pm. You had to go to a window, and through a speaker you told the clerk what you wanted. You paid first, and then your items were put in a metal "lazy susan" type contraption and turned your way. There was no way to injure/harm the clerk. Probably expensive to install, but well worth the safety.
TFinn 4/25/2014 9:49:54 AM Report

The fight against crime is never cheap, it costs ….but when human lives are at risk it should be a moral decision on the owners part to have safe guards in place, to at least have some sort of defence and protection for their employees.
iamtc 4/25/2014 10:12:13 AM Report

This is a big joke
justsomeguy 4/25/2014 10:13:16 AM Report

It's unfortunate that these things are even required here. You'd expect it in bigger cities, but one would hope not in a smaller city like SSM.
Bad Dawg 4/25/2014 10:21:22 AM Report

They need to re-install their store fronts where there is double doors and an automatic lock. So when they do get robbed the crook is locked up already waiting for police in a bubble. Sure you could get a security guard but then the crooks would show up in bigger numbers and may hurt the clerks, security, and/or bystanders instead of a store just being robbed.
jackie33 4/25/2014 10:25:46 AM Report

you people don't know anything about this maybe you should back off the mangers and talk to corporate heads about getting better security this is not a privately owned store ,and it there job to fix this not managers ,and they will always have idiots that rob the stores ,i personally know both managers and their staff safety is there first concern

Crime shifting away from Gore St. Heading west,
eadiecougs 4/25/2014 10:35:54 AM Report

have two doors when they rob u and try to escape both doors lock and trap them like the rats they are.
Frio 4/25/2014 11:23:18 AM Report

Lock the doors after 9:00 pm and use a simple pass thru tray arrangement to dispense the goods after the customer has paid for their order. It is used in many other places where crime and robbery is a problem and would not very expensive to install.
Pakadeva 4/25/2014 12:03:28 PM Report

I agree, we need more security, you have kids running these places sometimes, trying to earn a buck to get through school, etc. This has happened far too often, seems like daily, & as one person said, the actual owners of the business don't care. The managers will have to stand up to them. It's the locals who mourn when something tragic happens.

Hire a Korean guy with a base ball bat!
They don't take well to punks stealing their stuff.
TFinn 4/25/2014 1:23:04 PM Report

jackie33 4/25/2014 10:25:46 AM

I do know about safety for employees ...my previous post was and is directed to the owners. However having said that, it is the managers obligation to have open dialogue with the owners expressing the concerns and also keep a record of his/hers correspondence with them to ensure that he/she took appropriate steps to make the owners aware of the problem to the best of their ability, with that, the onus falls directly on the owners if things go wrong.
jackie33 4/25/2014 3:46:06 PM Report

this store does not have a private owner ,i know these guys that run this store and do not really think you should talk until you know the whole story ,corporate store managers have no say in how the store gets run or security of the place ,if people would stop being idiots and not rob a store that holds very little money in the store .i guess it's to much to grasp for some people ,
here's food for thought what if it was your kid getting robbed by knife or whatever ,i've been there and it's not really what any mother wants to hear so stop blaming the stores and put the blame where it belongs on the creeps that rob the store in the first place ok TFINN
asp 4/25/2014 6:00:23 PM Report

daz !!! It is so true, why can't the Mikes Mart store install an alarm that is so loud it wakes up the whole street or a Police button that will go directly to the station. The police station on Gore should have rotating shifts.( get these looser of the street and take the city back) The damn judges hand out harder penalties. Come On Lets all work together !!!
Irisheyes 4/25/2014 8:37:18 PM Report

These store clerks should not be working alone and be paid a premium wage.
