Watch out for sharp objects under snow

NEWS RELEASE

ALGOMA PUBLIC HEALTH

*************************
Now that spring has arrived, Algoma Public Health (APH) and the city of Sault Ste. Marie want to remind residents to be careful if they come across discarded needles.

For the most part, people who use needles take steps to dispose of them properly.

However, as the snow melts, you may find needles on the ground.

“Sharps (needles) may pose a risk of physical harm or serious bloodborne infections if handled inappropriately, said Jon Bouma, manager of Infection Control at Algoma Public Health. “It is important to pick up and dispose of them properly.”

Here’s how:
1) Use a pair of tongs, pliers or tweezers to pick up the needle. It is best to wear rubber gloves.
2) Pick the needle up by pointing the needle tip down and away from you.
3) Put the needle in a hard plastic container (like an empty coffee can or empty javex bottle) with a tight fitting lid and tape the lid closed.
4) Do not touch the object directly and do not recap, bend, break or remove the needle from a syringe.
5) From May to October, people can drop off containers at the Household Waste Facility located at 115 Industrial Park, Sault Ste. Marie. For the remainder of the year hard plastic containers are accepted at most local pharmacies for disposal.

If needles are found on public property, residents may call the Public Works and Transportation Department at 705-759-5201 to arrange for pickup and proper disposal by City staff.

Here's how to keep your children (and pets) safe from getting stuck with hypodermic needles (that have been used for illegal drugs, and may very well be holding HIV + blood): Kick the druggies out of the city. Put them in jail; where they can get the help they need. Why the f**k should it by my responsibility to keep my 2.5 year old away from the remnants of low-life pieces of crap? Just get rid of the low-lifes, and the problem goes away.

Its a sad day when we have to explain to our children about this kind of sickness.

This is a disgusting problem in our society~ BH

Walking my Dogs and with the Boyfriend iv Found 4 or 5 Used needles why not put the druggies or dealers in jail instead of giving them a slap on the wrist
superior87 4/23/2014 11:46:15 AM Report

There's a constructive answer!

Jail? Help? For drug addicts? Ha ha. Good one!

What would be a help is a safe injection site, but it seems a certain segment of the population cannot understand the benefits of a site like that so it will be a long, long, long time before they are seen throughout the country, let alone in old Sault Ste. Marie.

Luckily it's incredibly rare anyways to come across these things.
superior87 4/23/2014 11:46:50 AM Report

Why don't we just put EVERYONE in jail?
IgnorantNortherner 4/23/2014 11:49:40 AM Report

Well said, mikey! Your corrupted and immoral society is in now way responsible for creating these "low lifes" but maybe, just MAYBE if you put them in jail all their flaws will be cured by the magic of reinforced iron cages and they will come out outstanding, productive members of the community!

Certainly there is ample literature to back up this view? NO?!?! Recidivism rates GO UP with prison time?!?!?

well then......OFF WITH THEIR HEADS!!!!

....cause mike shouldn't have to explain to his toddler that not everyone is a perfect human being, like his family and.....Jesus.

"Put them in jail; where they can get the help they need."
What?
Frio 4/23/2014 11:59:36 AM Report

Why not pick up your dog shit, there is a lot more of that health hazard all over public and private property and sidewalks?.Also your garbage from smoking and fast food that is everywhere? The city looks like it's inhabited by a goodly number of total irresponsible, entitled slobs.
itsme29 4/23/2014 12:01:52 PM Report

superior a safe injection site is just stupid...next you will want the tax payers to pay for that and the needles... these clowns are society's loosers they cant be rehabilitated there 100 percent burnouts.. I really don't know what the cure is put them in jail there out next week back at there old routine (stealing for their drugs)
JJ_Symes 4/23/2014 12:03:06 PM Report

There is a D.N.A. data base for criminals right , most junkies are criminals.....ALL needles found out in public should be tested for dna sample , and they owners of the the dirty needles get a manditory criminal charge of attemp murder!!!!!! Children are innocent to these low lifes who throw there needles out like cigarette butts... time for an answer!
madmaymax 4/23/2014 12:03:39 PM Report

MORE SHARP BOXES NEEDED IN THIS CITY INSTEAD OF TALK AND MAYBE THEN THERE WOULD NOT BE ALL OVER THE PLACE,HARM REDUCTION PLACES WOULD BE EVEN BETTER:):):):):):):)
IgnorantNortherner 4/23/2014 12:14:10 PM Report

LOL JJ Symes, explain to me again how using equates to attempted murder? We should DNA sample all the cigarette butts too and give them attempted murder charges as well, right?

"Littering and.....littering and....littering and....attempted murder!"

If you truly believe in the value of life, you care about ALL of the weakest and most vulnerable members of society. You don't just exile them or lock them up and pretend they don't exist.

THESE PROBLEMS ARE REAL.
boilertyme 4/23/2014 12:15:38 PM Report

Frio, article in Readers Digest recommends pouring a little saved chicken grease/ bacon grease on the dog droppings , I've tried this and the droppings disappear overnight Lol
highway1 4/23/2014 12:27:57 PM Report

itsme, hate to break this to you, but tax payers already pay for the needles.
You're welcome.
steelworker 4/23/2014 12:30:33 PM Report

Typical druggie: sleep all day and "party" all night til the welfare runs out. When you have no money start breaking into houses to steal other peoples stuff. Harass people coming out of grocery stores for money. Do nothing to get help for yourselves. End up dead in the ditch after overdosing. I love a happy ending.
thumbs4208 4/23/2014 1:18:48 PM Report

Simple - this would not be such an issue if it was policed differently. IE: they make the choice to use-let the Police deal with it, we just need to get the Police to put them away.
Get the drugs of here because we pay for it that way too.
iamtc 4/23/2014 1:23:56 PM Report

I was walking in the downtown area and I seen dirty condoms, needles, empty liquor bottles,a bag of marijuana, cigarette butts, garbage everywhere, broken glass,a dead mouse, children playing in swamp water,A hooker Sun tanning on the corner,a homless man eating cigarette butts, a dog pooping, potholes everywhere oh yeah that's what it looks like everyday not just in spring...

this city is disgusting it is poorly run and rundown the community is not doing anything about this problem but commenting on sootoday and spitting jokes about these problems and as for the police doing something about stuff they can,,,,good luck with that I take my chances without them and there lack of knowledge and protecting our city they are a big joke just like the puc.
mikethedike 4/23/2014 1:30:55 PM Report

Ignorant Northerner (good name by the way). For your information, my family isnt perfect; im not perfect. I went to jail, for 3 months, for something stupid, and you know what? I never did that again, nor will i ever. I learned from my mistake. Yes, jail helped the population in my incarceration; thus never having to deal with me making the same mistake again.

Also, for the other ignoramous; safe injection sites exist; its called YOUR HOUSE
mikethedike 4/23/2014 1:37:31 PM Report

But what if you cant afford a house? Maybe you should put some of your Heroin money away.

Society is not to blame here. We all make decisions everyday. Most people try to be helpful members of the population. Others, such as drug-using low lifes, do not. Their fault, not mine.
Stevie-E 4/23/2014 1:52:39 PM Report

Bring back chain gangs and let the drug addicts clean up the city in exchange for drugs that can be taken inside an institutionalized area where they live out their years and let them kill themselves slowly (or quickly with good behaviour!).

Our city will be spotless and you won’t see junkies on the street committing violent home invasions or shaking down pedestrians to get their next fix.
Rehabilitation is available for those who want it voluntarily, but for the chronic users, there really is no fixing them. They will always regress back to that desire to use again. So give them what they want and let them work for it!

If they want to act like animals…treat them like one. Why should we make room in society for people who don’t want to be part of it?
Alystr 4/23/2014 1:55:37 PM Report

How's about we just beat the hell out of any druggies that like to dispose their trash in public. Losers.. If you need to be a crackhead, have respect for others who don't use..
SimsDrum 4/23/2014 2:02:51 PM Report

Ya not to mention the Jews and the Blacks!!!
lets get rid of everyone! People are the worst!!

....Sarcasm (just in case you dont get it)
lizzardskills 4/23/2014 3:05:25 PM Report

Always so many uneducated comments in this site! No wonder the Sault is in such a sad state!

I actually really dislike lying, manipulative stealing drug addicts(those that are). I actually also really dislike the correctional system. Why? Because it does not work. It does nothing for the mental health issues ALL drug addicts suffer from. I have known and do know a few drug addicts and they have not had a pretty life prior to drug addiction. Many got there start as CHILDREN. Many were born into that lifestyle. Many seemed to have perfect lives, good paying jobs, families, they had it all.

They need first line mental health care and life skills coaching along with a 100 other things.

As for the needle issue....it's not RARE like someone posted. It is frequent depending how many drug addicts are living in your neighborhood. My 10 yr old knows the routine for needles her and her friends see. I live in an area that has an issue. It would be nice to see drop boxes for this stuff so there is a place to put it, sealed cans even! There is no need at all for this to be happening if the city and Algoma public health strategically placed these throughout the city with 24 hr access! The police while on routine drives could check these to ensure they are not being damaged.

People need to stop their nonsense ramblings about throwing them in jail and tossing the key! It's never going to happen! How about you come up with some educated ideas that might actually work and not cost a fortune!
mikethedike 4/23/2014 4:12:23 PM Report

lizardskills... bullets are cheap... just saying... is cheap really the answer? What is the cost of your children's health and well-being? What is the cost of cleaning up the downtown?

Nobody said "locking these types up and throwing away the key" was the answer. But, if a crime is committed, surely justice should be served.

Stevie-E 4/23/2014 4:22:18 PM Report

@mikethedike

Spot on my friend. We are not saying kill people but I think "rehab" is passé and may work only for a small percentage of repeat users and criminals who commit crimes to use. I have a small family and know that I wouldn't care what happens to these deadbeats as long as they are off the street...

...but to those granola munchers who think that singing kumbaya and swaying around, hoping that their peers will be rehabilitated need to wake up!

My idea works well for all parties involved. It's humane (gives junkies a sense of purpose...with free drugs!) and will make the liberals happy, it makes me happy because we can save money on city beautification, keeps them off the streets, and it makes the junkies happy (free drugs and a place to do it safely behind bars!)

So cheap! So effective! Darwin's theories don't need to apply to just simple animals!
mac2 4/23/2014 4:46:58 PM Report

Sweets312 4/24/2014 7:22:40 AM Report

I have a question for all you judgmental know-it-alls. How do you feel about the high income earners that have addictions? There are a lot more out there than you may realize. If the "fix" was as easy as you state, why is the issue still spreading? The way I see it, when someone is so judgmental of others, the universe will bring that issue into your life, to you or someone close to you, to help you see that ANYONE, rich, poor, black, white, hard life, easy life, can end up with an addiction....so, good luck with your easy fix solution when the time comes. Maybe educate yourself on issues before you make judgments. Do you actually think people WANT this life. I had to learn the hard way with my child...who was a valedictorian, honour role student that played in every sport he could. So, unless you know first hand what these humans go through, I suggest you shut your mouth.
highway1 4/24/2014 4:40:06 PM Report

I agree totally sweets, but "educate yourself on issues before you make judgments." will never happen on this discussion board.
It a space for the most ignorant to spew.
I just hope it's a minority and not representative of the majority.
