Liberals announce plan to boost Child Tax BenefitWednesday, April 23, 2014 by: SooToday.com Staff
DAVID ORAZIETTI, SAULT MPP
Provincial Government Continuing to Strengthen Support for Children and Families
The Ontario government today introduced its plan to invest in child care by increasing the Ontario Child Benefit and investing in early childhood educators and front-line child care workers, announced David Orazietti MPP.
“Our government recognizes that early learning and child care is important to meet our local needs and to help parents balance the demands of work and family,” said Orazietti. “It is critical that we continue to strengthen supports for families so that children in our community get the best start possible.”
Beginning in July 2014, Ontario families will receive another increase of up to $100 annually while many families will become eligible for the Ontario Child Benefit for the first time.
With this increase, the benefit will have more than doubled to up to $1310 annually.
As part of Budget 2014, starting July 2015, the province proposes to tie future increases to the Ontario Child Benefit to inflation in Ontario to help eligible families keep pace with the rising costs of raising their children.
To help provide the best possible care for our children by recruiting and retaining the best possible early childhood educators and front-line child care workers by providing fairer wages, the provincial government is also proposing an increase of an average of two dollars per hour for early childhood educators and other front-line child care workers.
The first increase will be an average of one dollar per hour and will start January 2015.
Increasing the Ontario Child Benefit and improving the quality of licensed child care is part of Ontario's plan to break down barriers for low-income Ontarians, reduce poverty and improve public services. Helping families raise healthy children also supports the government's economic plan that is creating jobs for today and tomorrow by focusing on Ontario's greatest strengths -- its people and strategic partnerships.
Ontario first created the Ontario Child Benefit in 2008, which has increased from $600 to $1,310 as of July 2014, helping to lift nearly 60,000 children out of poverty
Together, by increasing the Ontario Child Benefit to $1,310 in July 2014 and indexing it to inflation in Ontario beginning July 2015, the government proposes to invest $160 million more in benefits to families with children under the age of 18 across Ontario
There are approximately 42,000 program staff, including about 17,000 registered early childhood educators in Ontario, that are eligible for this wage enhancement

Can you tell the Ontario Liberals are shaking in their boots over an upcoming election.
Ontario is broke, hydro costs out of control, billions wasted on a non existent gas plant and useless green energy...
But don't you go worrying about anything cause the Liberals are going to throw a bunch more of taxpayer money around.

by your name right wing, and the way you are shooting down the liberals, i am wondering if you think, that if conservatives were in charge, things would be better?
it seems like alot of people nowadays believe, no matter who gets in, not much is going to change.

this will help the 'kids having kids' unfortunately they probably don't vote.
The rest of the hard working, tax paying people of Ontario who are struggling with high Hydro, harmonized tax better get off their asses and vote this bunch out.
If not, it will be more of the same, time to move out of this province !

I am of the opinion that; since the stock market became the measure of "the economy", we average citizens and our votes have become irrelevant. Corporations used to exist to produce a good product at a fair price and provide good employment to their employees. Since the stock market became most important, the corporation exists to maximize the return to shareholders, and the hell with everything else, including employee good-will. Am I jaundiced? Damn right!

mac, rightwing is hardly alone in his religious conviction that his team is better than all the others (but the only difference among them is their rhetoric) but can't seem to grasp there is really only one team.
rw, ppl are against monopolies on food, energy, banking, telecommunications, etc and that is what corporations have come to represent for many of us. They seem to have far too much influence to ever be held accountable for their crimes and are parasitic in their nature. They are in opposition to any persons that value freedom and liberty above all...even profit.

i am with the not so ignorant northerner on this, unfortunately i am under the impression right wing is one of these people that don't really care what is right or wrong, as long as he can come out of it looking like he is right, on an anonymous comment section, to boot.
i see him on here all day every day on almost every article, arguing with people, shooting them down, etc etc. not to come out of it with a better understanding, but to make himself look right, again, on an anonymous comment section. haha
i could be wrong though, i have been many times before. :p

NO, they use it to get drunk , high or get hair and nails done..... They should just cover some daycare costs for people actually working instead of just handing out more cash for those who don't, and take up spots with only paying minimal amounts if any at all!! 20,000 is not a two income working family.

Mr. E your so right!!!! There are enough young women with children and father not involved in their lives or pay support. Some of these guys just go on and get another girl pregnant. Whatever happen in waiting for the right guy !! The money the government is willing to give the girls (women) should be going to health care. Now elderly patients and injured people that require at home care are told they have to go outside of the home to get care (Revera Living). WHAT is our government doing. COME ON!!! Some people don't drive so they have pay for rides to get there so who is going to pay for that. With this cut back nurses are going to loose their jobs but the office personal will keep theirs(they don't even do their jobs properly Community Care Access Centre personal). The case managers are suppose to visit patients once a year but that not even being done. Why don't we start cutting jobs the jobs in the office and give their money to the nurses so they can keep theirs jobs in provding care. Come on peolpe start calling your government representives and the Community Care Access Centre. Please let save Patients Care and Nursing job !!!!

I agree with KTL, something needs to be done to help the middle class people. I'm not opposed to increasing the child tax benefit, however, a portion of these people receiving the benefit already benefit from subsidized daycare and what not. It's an unfortunate time to be middle class in Ontario because you work hard with no relief in sight.

I LOVE how Hardguy complains about how he hates how things are being run and then status that he doesn't vote for those reasons lmao. If your not gonna vote then you really have no right to complain what the people in power do...
I usually don't vote for Liberals but considering the plans they have shown I am highly considering voting for them this year. I think the increase in Child tax as well as the money they plan to put towards child care is an amazing idea. Nobody is looking at the big picture here, everyone is just being as judgmental as always and either way no matter what our government decided to do you guys would probably complain either way.
Weather you guys think the government is supporting bums and/or kids having kids doesn't matter. The point here is the government is making sure that children's needs are being met. Yes many young women are having kids and it is because of this the government is deciding to help young parents to give these Children who have done NOTHING wrong are just helpless innocent little kids, a chance. They are making sure there basic needs are meet and they are helping with daycare both to ensure jobs for people in child care education and as well to provide a way for young moms to finish school so they can move on and becoming independent working class people.

Ya, cuz all the extra money they are going to get is going to go right to their children.
Yup, the bingo halls, liquor stores or cell phone companies won't benefit from this at all.
Just another dream of rainbows and unicorns and everyone doing the right thing.
Sure that will happen. Don't worry, I'll pay my $1800 tax bill for working my ass off at 2 jobs last year, while the single mothers text all the other single mothers on their iphones about how much more they can help their suffering children.

Lets be honest here, how often does the "baby Bonus" actually GO to the kids. I have seen first hand the bars PACK around the 20th and at the end of the month. Also it is a known fact that the delivery and taxi drivers are swamped with house calls for booze. I am a firm believer that the government should start monitoring welfare and baby bonus. These programs are set to help needy families. Lets start seeing proof. I bet we would get out of our debt crisis real fast if they made the people on assistance more accountable.

Im not a fan of the liberal party but I like the idea of a government trying to help poor folks even if it is just for votes. I could care less if some folks spend their tax credit on booze and video games. I prefer to think about the single mothers that need every bit of help they can get. There are far more disturbing things that the government wastes our money on ie Jets, war on drugs, the senate, CBC and all the shady scandals we hear about and most often than not dont hear about. So quit griping about poor people living hard lives, getting a few crumbs now and then. I dont get any tax breaks, I work to the best of my abilities and struggle like most middle class to get ahead. Giving single moms a couple bucks aint gonna change that.
