What does No. 1 look like? (9 photos)

Wednesday, April 16, 2014   by: Brad Jones

Sault College staff and students gathered in the front lobby of Essar Hall this morning, all wearing shirts displaying a brand new saying: “This is what #1 looks like.”

The slogan celebrates Sault College’s recent top ranking among colleges across Ontario, as ranked by students.

“I can now say, mission accomplished,” said Ron Common, president of Sault College. ”Students come first, it’s our mantra, so it’s only appropriate that we come first with our students.”

The campus space has undergone many changes recently with the addition in just this last academic year of the new Health and Wellness Centre, and the Common Link - both spaces devoted to serving the needs of the students.

These new additions provide a social hub connecting the college’s recent developments with the older establishment, and a place that has seen many student-run events like Cheer for WUSC, and the annual traditional powwow.

The college says staff demonstrate their commitment to understanding barriers affecting student education, and putting student needs first.

“Obviously the students are everything,” said Jordan Bourneman, president of Sault College Student Union.

”To see that the students have ranked us No.1 in front of all of other colleges in Ontario really speaks to the fact that the students have recognized that we’re here for them and we are very much student focused.”

Sault College says it is preparing to maintain its momentum and launch forward into the 2014/15 academic school year with fresh ideas, renewed vigor, and the same commitment to community excellence.

It truly is amazing what you can accomplish with a near endless supply of taxpayer dollars.

It truly is amazing how, within every single article on this website, you spew negativity and bitterness in the comment section. I'm sure you are such a joy to all of those around you.

Don't worry Mike....Look at it this way....If the title was "this is what #2 looks like", it would have had a picture of Ignorant Northerner

Yes the bar is open there, nice place with very good food.

The college leaves you wanting nothing, IMO a great place to get an education.

Sault College is by far NOT #1.

Did you know this school takes students with the lowest grades coming out of high school. Students will tell you that they applied at Sault College because no other schools in the province of Ontario would take them.

They are only concerned about money not grades or performance. Just pay your money people, put your time in and you will graduate.

The nursing program is by far the biggest joke! They do not fail students, they just pass them through. If you want your kids to get a good education Sault College is not the place to do it!!!!!

tired of all the lies...Are you in the nursing program?...I know of a few young ladies that were in their 2nd yr and were being actively pursued by hospitals in the states because they said (not me) that Sault College had one of the best programs going...

Tired of all the lies it sounds like you could not cut it at soo college. Soo college is not unlike other college's in the country. To say that they pass everyone in nursing is hillarious as nursing and aviation has one of the biggest failure and dropout rates. Be proud of the accomplishments that our local educational institutions have instead of being jealous. And perhaps they will let you take the nursing program next year.

but yeah, the actual KPI report is a little less than glowing. outside of students bubbling with pride over their crappy community college, the charts rank sault college graduates as some of the absolute worst ... by those whose opinion matters: employers! this is NOT a report to be flaunting!!
