Water main break results in more brown water

Wednesday, April 16, 2014   by: Staff

PUC customers in Sault Ste. Marie are advised that due to a water main break on Denwood Drive, discoloured water in the east end has been reported as a result of this incident.

PUC crews are working to repair the break.

Anyone that does draw discoloured water should call PUC Customer Service at 705‐759‐6522 Monday-Friday from 9 a.m. - 4:30 p.m. and 705‐759‐6555 at all other times.

During the repair process, traffic flow will be restricted on Denwood Drive while crews conduct repairs.

This traffic restriction is necessary to ensure the safety of repair crews as well as the travelling public.

We apologize for this inconvenience to our customers, and wish to thank everyone for their understanding and cooperation.

Lights out, neighbourhoods in the dark, brown water, water mains breaking, potholes capable of destroying life and limb. Our city is going to Hell in a handbasket.
MYPOINT 4/16/2014 11:11:33 AM Report

is as follows .....

Our city council has just voted to give us all a break with the 0% tax increase this year. This will greatly increase the general deterioration of our entire infrastructure in this city! Did someone mention that it is an " ELECTION YEAR " ?
Beej 4/16/2014 11:11:57 AM Report

Don't forget the wonderful "swimming pool" flavor of the new improved water.
But, ZERO tax increase!
GoHoundsGo 4/16/2014 11:25:56 AM Report

I along with most people can understand that this has been a fairley abnormal winter and has likley caused a greater amount of issues to our infrastructure...but the amount and severity of the issues I assume most likely were not bugeted for. I could be wrong but we'll see. I bring that up because of the huge amount of money spent on the new facility on second line. The PUC new and knows very well that our current electrical, water and sewage infrastructure is in need of dire repair and upgrading. Where will these new monies come from. Most likely a new increase I would guess. The building of the new digs should have not have been the priority, the current degraded and insufficient infrastructure should have been. As the ground continues to thaw more and more problems will arise, and I'm sure many will be unforeseen and some will be expected but will be struggling for a way to pay for it all, but maybe not when another increase will cover it.
The wife and I have decent jobs, and are blessed to be middle class, and we are finding it increasing difficult to budget for the PUC bill every month, I dont know how people on fixed low incomes and seniors manage. Everytime there is an increase thats less of our money we can spend at restaurants, shopping, and any other leisure activities. The problem is cyclical and eventually affects everyone.
The PUC needs to find away to resolve these issues without increasing rates, whether it be not donating to other organizations, selling assests not critical to operations, pay cuts to a failed upper mgt., whatever it takes but the increases have to stop or atleast slow down for a few years.

The 0% tax increase was used last election year also. Instead they 'reassessed' everyones homes by about 40% so you still pay more taxes regardless.

I'm sure the same scheme will be used here again.
Brianne 4/16/2014 11:40:01 AM Report

Was just looking at my PUC bill

City sewage charge = $25.84
Water Consumption = $ 3.98
Basic Service charge-$21.86

Total $51.68

So it cost me $47.70 to use $3.98 worth of water. Seriously ?

I think it's time for people to get "cold water tanks" and store water for a one time fee . There could be "water delivery trucks" Something to think about.
hockeytime 4/16/2014 12:01:27 PM Report

First I'm told we have Brown water as a result from Construction at the plant ,then I'm told it's from the main well being upgraded ,then I'm told water main break ,then I'm told you will experience it again as the new well isn't working Now another main break Soooooooooo I'm not to sure .There is one thing for sure my bill goes up and they leave the lights on all night in the new building conserving power that I pay for what a joke
habsfan 4/16/2014 12:21:32 PM Report

I also heard through the grapevine that because every is using their power after 7.00pm they are extending peak hrs to 11pm. Dont worry though, you will get used to it
Right of Centre 4/16/2014 12:40:03 PM Report

If that's true, when the hell are we supposed to do laundry and vac? Between 11pm and 7am?

Get rid of the Liberals. While we still have a few cents to drive to the polling stations.
Mr. Poster 4/16/2014 1:04:08 PM Report

This city council and the mayor need to be replaced in the upcoming election. They put their own re-election needs before us They are in office to look out for US...not them. They know very well that no city can afford a zero tax hike. All costs of any city go up all the time. By delaying an inevitable small tax hike they have created a situation whereby in the next budget you will see THEIR NEED for a 5 percent tax hike. Most taxpayers would like appreciate 2.5 per year I would suspect.

On another note...if the 2 ward 2 reps cannot find a way to fix PIM HILL PERMANENTLY...please quit politics To allow such a mess is something they should have looked after..a big accident is going to happen. Those reps who in the area of HURON STREET near ALbert Street should be ousted for not demanding that road be fixed...try driving through there.

So, when a water main breaks and the clean water leaks out, the brown water sneaks in?

Sounds like another excuse for a bunch of people that have no clue as to what they are doing.

PS, the last 2 nights I have looked at the clean toilet water and it was actually brown...the pipes knew ahead of time that they were going to break

They have cold water tanks. They are called water coolers. And companies deliver the bottles.

P.S. I love Sault Ste. Marie

When there is a tax increase - "How dare these crooks at city hall raise taxes when they are high enough. Think of the seniors"

When there is no tax increase - "How dare these crooks at city hall not raise my taxes. All of our infrastructure is going to crumble now!"
Sam C 4/16/2014 4:58:49 PM Report

Dara... yes, that IS what happens. When a water main breaks, the downstream side has less (or no) pressure, so it is possible for sediment to get into the line... which is why crews must disinfect the repaired section.

As well, the disruption in flow pattern caused by the break permits water to backflow, stirring up sediment that exists in the lines.

and how is everyone loving the bleachy brown water? and the bill for it? :p

I've had some smelly unpleasant tasting water before, but this is ridiculous!
pony 4/16/2014 6:54:32 PM Report

Well, it's going on for 7 p.m. and the water is still funky. I would expect more from our service providers.

If your not a special interest group or if you don't wine & dine the monies at city hall, you can't expect much.

Money talks and Bulls&^t walks - nothing you do will fix the problem. Just pay, pay & pay.

sorry ** wine & dine the monkeys

The big slap in the face has to be the new swanky PUC building....the big swanky donation from PUC....all on the backs of the little hard worker. When is it enough? Who isn't lining who's pockets that can step up and say we have had enough of this! Together people can accomplish anything.
harry dick 4/16/2014 9:01:52 PM Report

Until very recently , brown water and bad tasting water was never an issue . What happened to make it start happening? .Pease do not blame it on the provincial government again. That story has been worn out for a long time . We need to find out the reasoning behind this mess and fix it . Let's get back to nice tasting water and no brown water again.
