Man eats massive burger, doesn't barf . . . right away (8 photos)

Tuesday, April 15, 2014   by: Michael Purvis

Survivor’s Eye of the Tiger blared over the sound system at an east-end pub on Monday afternoon as Jonathan Clarke choked down the last greasy morsel of the Harp Attack Challenge.

And with that, the meat was officially beat.

“I didn’t take a 12-hour bus ride to lose this challenge,” said Clarke, a 23-year-old music student from London, Ont. who travelled to the Sault for the sole purpose of taking on the Harp Bar & Grill challenge.

In case you don’t know, this is the Harp Attack Challenge: a six-pound burger made up of six patties, two grilled cheese sandwiches, a pound of bacon, cheese and a couple onion rings thrown in for good measure.

Not only that, but a Harp Attack Challenger must slurp down a full pound of poutine - all before an hour runs out.

Clarke is the first to cram the massive meal down his gullet (though, we should note it didn't all stay down) and the first to take away the Las Vegas trip offered up by the Pine Plaza establishment.

John Perri, the bar’s manager, said after watching 21 others try and fail to eat his burger, he was relieved to see Clarke polish it off.

The pub started offering the challenge in January, hoping to drum up interest and Perri said it has worked.

“It brings atmosphere to the place, and everybody in the place cheers them on,” he said.

He said he went out of his way to better other restaurant challenges - most, he said, top out around five pounds - and he had started to worry that people were getting discouraged.

Enter Clarke.

“He just proved it’s not impossible. He’s not a very big guy,” said Perri.

If anyone was going to do it, Clarke was a good bet.

The  fourth-year Western University student has made it his mission over the last six months to tackle such challenges and post his adventures on a YouTube channel called Junkfood Bodybuilding.

His previous triumphs include downing 75 Reese’s Peanut Butter Cups in one go, gobbling up two pounds of butter, and eating all 11 of Burger King’s burger offerings in a single sitting.

“This was something. I’ve done a lot of challenges and (the Harp Attack) was possibly the toughest,” said Clarke.

A body builder and healthy eater most of the time, the challenges give new meaning to the term ‘cheat day’ but the relatively trim Clarke said it tends to work out as long as he sticks to his regular diet the rest of the week.

His time in the gym actually comes in handy when it comes to eating big, he said.

“The closest thing I compare it to is when you’re in the gym and you’re trying to push through those last few sets,” said Clarke, who brought up at least part of the Harp Attack Challenge about 10 minutes after conquering it.

People in the world are starving and this site has to glorify this gluttonous behaviour. Wow hard up for news or what?
CTgasman 4/15/2014 5:59:16 PM Report

Didn't take long for someone to diss this story. I have been to the Harp and the food is great. I am happy to see someone defeat that massive burger.
IgnorantNortherner 4/15/2014 5:59:46 PM Report

Western civilization is basically the definition of in which far off land do you live, gumby, where gluttony is not a part of the culture?

Not saying it's right (as it should be clear that it is not) but sootoday is no more guilty than anyone else, imo.
Gumby54 4/15/2014 6:16:02 PM Report

Right - someone beat he big burger and then BARFED it all up. How many underfed people in this town could have benefited from this publicity stunt - either directly from the wasted food or from the money that was used to promote this?
We call ourselves a humane society and yet glorify stunts like this that show our lack of concern for those less fortunate.
Hunter101 4/15/2014 6:18:17 PM Report

Gumby, it's a shame that people are starving halfway across the world.

You don't need to make people feel bad about it.

People don't have a pot to piss in as well, but are you going to make me feel bad for making the sunshine list?

Get a life.
Gumby54 4/15/2014 6:23:18 PM Report

There is a difference between working and making the sunshine list and glorifying this for the sake of publicity. I know stuff like this happens -
I'm not naive; but for a site to glorify it sure shows what type of a so called news outlet they are.
itsme29 4/15/2014 6:24:05 PM Report

gumby nobodys starving in this town I give them good money thru welfare they prbly eat better then I do... get a life u idiot... the real story is that the burger was that nasty he upchucked in the parkin lot...betcha the seagulls are havin fun
hardyguy33 4/15/2014 6:25:30 PM Report

ya really. so someone is starving somewhere and it is buddy's fault for eating a 6lb burger?

what a joke. i am sure u donate all your money to the starving and the poor right gumby?

take ur meds
Gumby54 4/15/2014 6:28:25 PM Report

You are entitled to your opinion as am I. Maybe try to share yours without resorting to name calling. Whether this contest is right or wrong is not the point. Glorifying it is just wrong.
jojoe71 4/15/2014 6:30:02 PM Report

any food eating contest makes me sick. It's very hard on the body. same as binge drinking. you gotta have a death wish.
itsme29 4/15/2014 6:43:54 PM Report

if they guy wants to stuff himself its his right, he paid for it. If u wanna save the hungry over in Africa or whatever go give them all your money...don't bother us with your whining though...and don't ask me to pitch in. I gave at the office :p
soowat 4/15/2014 6:52:01 PM Report

If Gumby wants to be fed up with this that's his right. However, those of us that take a more relaxed view of life may join together and tell him to "burger off"
moto 4/15/2014 7:00:41 PM Report

haha mr. perry cough up your vegas tickets..and for what, a 2 day trip?! cheap :/
Redneck75 4/15/2014 7:02:57 PM Report

I hate this idiotic starving people in the world argument. Had he not eaten the burger, the starving people in the world wouldn't be either.
Gumby54 4/15/2014 7:11:48 PM Report

Its not whether there are starving people in Africa (where did that come from?) or even Sault Ste Marie; was not the point. What is though is "Glorifying for the sake of calling this NEWS is just wrong."
When something like this qualifies as newsworthy .... Well ...never mind enough said.
Hunter101 4/15/2014 7:40:35 PM Report

Yeah you're right gumbo. We should just stick to depressing news stories like people getting killed. Much better read.
hydraulics1 4/15/2014 8:01:44 PM Report

Burger looked good.
YourFutureNurse 4/15/2014 8:13:00 PM Report

I'm happy someone finally beat the challenge. Congrats! Was starting to think it wouldn't get done :)

Rob Ford would have woofed that down with one sniff.
Koolaid 4/15/2014 8:56:19 PM Report

He barfed all over a little old lady in the parking lot, and seagulls ate her and all the barf.

Entitledtomyopinion 4/15/2014 9:43:28 PM Report

Hey Gumby - let's send this to Ethiopia and solve the world's hunger problems....It's a freakin' hamburger. How do you know this guy doesn't volunteer in his spare time to help the greater good? Man...I LOVE this site....

lp670-4 Super Veloce 4/15/2014 9:57:40 PM Report

i agree, we should be ashamed as a society. there are hungry people in the world and eating a 6 lb burger is just a slap in the face to poverty. id draw the line at 4 lbs max. you should all be ashamed for jumping on someone for raising a valid point. The Haarp should be shut down for this stunt.
kamen 4/15/2014 10:21:42 PM Report

First of all, congrats, second of all that is disgusting lol waaaay too much food...third please tell me that they cleaned up the parking lot because if I see that on my way to work tomorrow I am probably going to be sick my self.....that is couldn't get sick in the bathroom? or in the garbage can or something.......gross dude...have fun in vegas...
makemyday 4/16/2014 1:11:16 AM Report

FFS all of you are complete fools if you find something wrong with this. Kudos to The Harp (never been there....yet) It was a fun thing to do and hats off to the thinker!

If you are all going to complain about ppl starving give your friggin heads a shake.

Hypocrits..............I'm done.

Do us all a favor and find something better to do than complain and criticize about every little thing that you can find to nit pic about. Enough already.
lp670-4 Super Veloce 4/16/2014 1:38:20 AM Report

@ Makemyday
Maybe you should be more globally aware
moto 4/16/2014 1:40:00 AM Report

who cares that this is noted as news..its only sootoday ... its not CNN national holy crap people take a break from all that and just know this was a fun challenge and whatever gives the business publicity good or bad then its good for them because it is getting talked about and raved is a great establishment and does well!
toodles 4/16/2014 5:37:01 AM Report

Hey Gumby, I hope you never watch Man vs. Food Nation, pal. You'll have Adam Richman lynched.
mikematt56 4/16/2014 6:41:24 AM Report

Gumby go play with your pokey :)
Asuna 4/16/2014 6:54:30 AM Report

i mean he barfed it up only 10 mins after eating it....
that somehow warrants a win? and 2 tickets to las vegas?

shju 4/16/2014 9:25:40 AM Report

Wow you people are ironic. You type from your computers, and cell phones that cost 20 times more then this burger would cost. If you want to bash people about feeding the rest of the world then give up your worldly possessions and feed them.
Bad Dawg 4/16/2014 9:54:33 AM Report

Gumby your comments piss me off..... do you not have running water?? there are people without yet you still flush clean water...... you are just as bad as the rest of us!!
Battler213 4/16/2014 11:44:38 AM Report

NEWS has changed to what people want. If a site just posted "news worthy" stuff, according to Gumbys standard. They would go bankrupt fast.

News sites post what people want to see. That's what they are in the business for. If you want to read real news - I'm sure the library has a collection from the 20-30's prohibition era.
bulletcards 4/16/2014 1:43:55 PM Report

I guess gumby and other like minded people have the food network and oln blocked. give it a break. food challanges are the in thing now. couldn't be more happy. I have a healthy appatite and I like to eat. so sue me. I am quite happy that the harp and wacky's have some sort of food challange that is difficult. talk about tourist dollars!!! we need a few more restaurants doing some food challanges and then watch the tourists roll in. maybe smokes poutine should make a giant 7 pound poutine to eat in under an hour??? I wish this guy would have contacted food vs man nation and see if Adam Richmond would have done a shoot here.
MedicalGirl33 4/16/2014 5:38:55 PM Report

What are you doing to help the world? Are you donating money to charities? Are you using your spare time or taking time out of your priorities to help those in need? Instead of bashing this guy, why don't you do something productive and make a change yourself? Narrow-minded people need to stop judging everybody's actions, grow up and be a positive influence on people. This city is crawling with negativity. It needs to stop
MedicalGirl33 4/16/2014 5:40:14 PM Report

Moto! I agree with you completely.. So many individuals have too much time on their hands if they are busy bashing the world.... Go do something productive!
