Special weather statement in effect for Elliot Lake - Ranger Lake - Greater Sudbury and vicinity - Blind River - Thessalon - Espanola - Killarney - Manitoulin Island

Potential late season winter storm late Sunday into Monday.

The calendar may say April, but old man winter may not be done with Northeastern Ontario just yet.

A complex weather system is expected to affect portions of Ontario Sunday and Monday with rain and snow.

Over much of Northeastern Ontario, current indications suggest that the most significant precipitation will move into the area Sunday night and end later on Monday.

Precipitation may begin as rain before changing to snow overnight Sunday or early Monday as temperatures fall to the freezing mark.

Freezing rain is also a possibility.

There is still considerable uncertainty with regards to the exact track of the weather system, and as a result, it is difficult to say how much snow or rain may fall at this point.

However, it is likely that some areas may see in excess of 15 centimetres of snow.

Such winter storms are not that uncommon over Northeastern Ontario at this time of the year.

Watches and warnings may be issued as the event draws nearer and more information becomes available.
