Brown water warning for Thursday

Wednesday, April 09, 2014   by: Staff

This information is provided as a public service notification to consumers of municipal drinking water in Sault Ste. Marie that may affect consumers in the east end of the city.

The shutdown of the municipal well in the east end of the city was necessary for PUC crews to perform maintenance on the well.

The well was originally scheduled to return to service on Wednesday, March 26.

However, due to operational circumstances the restart procedure had to be postponed.

The well is now scheduled to return to service on Thursday, April 10, 2014 at 9 a.m.

Operational circumstances may impact the actual start time.

PUC is providing this notice in order to advise consumers that the startup of this well may result in discoloured water at the tap.

Anyone that does draw discoloured water should flush their cold water faucets only (preferably a laundry tub or bath tub without screens or filters) for up to 15 minutes to clear the lines.

Do not run the hot water, in order to avoid filling your hot water tank with discoloured water.

If the water does not clear up after at least 15 minutes of flushing, please call Customer Service at 705- 759-6522 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m., and 705-759-6555 at all other times.

iamtc 4/9/2014 10:19:05 AM Report

I don't think I have had clear water in years it's always brown
mallet 4/9/2014 10:40:54 AM Report

Seems that well needs an awful lot of maintenance, perhaps they should onsider drilling a new one, it maybe be cheaper in the long run...
ThinkAgain 4/9/2014 10:53:03 AM Report

What does Operational circumstances mean?

Does it mean hurry up, lets get going, its almost time for coffee.
mac2 4/9/2014 11:03:55 AM Report

omg! the comment section is going to be a total freak! lol
Jitterbug 4/9/2014 11:12:10 AM Report

Yes mac2 again. I leave in the east end eastern ave this is just getting totally ridiculous we still have to pay regardless What Is Up with that?????????? No break on our bills.
mac2 4/9/2014 11:22:25 AM Report

i understand your frustration, mine tastes and smells of total javex/bleach.
Gumby54 4/9/2014 11:32:03 AM Report

Just a heads up; this is the Shannon Road Well that had been down for repairs that will be put back in service. Hopefully in future news releases the PUC could include information on which well as this does affect certain areas of the East end depending on the well. At least they are trying to keep us informed.
Dara 4/9/2014 11:38:10 AM Report

When is the PUC board of directors going to resign and let somebody in that knows what they are doing.

They have had enough pressure to get it right that they now warn us that they messed up yet again so watch out.
Frio 4/9/2014 11:38:39 AM Report

I live in the east end and have had brown water a couple of times..Instead of wasting time and water running it until the water gets clear, I just drink water from my Britta pitcher. A few hours later I run a little water until the tap runs clear instead of trying to drain all the stirred up sediment out of miles of watermain. Pretty simple, but it requires a little common sense instead of complaining on here.
iamtc 4/9/2014 11:41:58 AM Report

Frio better of drinking water from soo locks.
Gumby54 4/9/2014 11:44:21 AM Report

We have had so much experience over the last few years that we too just prepare by filling a few buckets with water ahead of time to use in toilets. By 5pm on the day they mention it is usually safe to run your taps again. Fortunately we have this luxury - no children at home now. Washing clothes etc is put off for a day or so. It is definitely inconvenient for what we pay but until / if the situation changes we are just SOL.
Heck living in the East end is almost as rough as living at my rustic camp - bottled water and an outhouse suffice there.
Jitterbug 4/9/2014 11:47:18 AM Report

Good point let PUC buy us all Britti jugs and water bottles but what do you do with a big fish tank, my dogs water and birds. I have let the water sit and run and my fish still died gold fish not the tropical ones if gold fish die and they can live in ponds that tells you something
Jitterbug 4/9/2014 11:52:32 AM Report

P.S. No I do not clean the fish tank around that time I have had no fish since the water had a problem two years ago. Thank god there are no pet stores in our area BIG TROUBLE
Ohwow 4/9/2014 12:22:41 PM Report

I blame the OPP. The brown water wouldn't happen if they didn't have to bring up an Orillia tactical squad to apprehend the two suspects a week or so ago in Batchewana.
Beej 4/9/2014 12:23:11 PM Report

I've spent over $1000 to date on Brita pitchers, filters, and bottled water.
Will we ever see a dime of it back?
They are..

Confidence in them.

New management is badly needed, management that doesn't believe that drinking brown swimming pool water is good for you.
IgnorantNortherner 4/9/2014 12:42:40 PM Report

That's fine for drinking, Beej, but what do you do for showers? A hot shower with that stuff is akin to hopping in a gas chamber. Might not kill you today, but it will kill you eventually.

What is more important than having good quality water?

Any one that opts out of paying this coercive, corrupt company has free access to my artesian well until such time as the water improves drastically...if you're willing to make the trek to allen side road.
Beej 4/9/2014 1:17:09 PM Report

There is no pleasure in taking a shower in it, either, or washing clothes in it.
You say stop paying your bill?
That will only accomplish one thing,
getting your services cut off.

Hey beej!
Your not supposed to throw the Brita jug out after each use. They are reusable. No need to spend $1000 on them. You guys are all a joke. Stop complaining stop paying your bill and drill a well. That will solve all of your problems. The Puc doesn't care. The rule this town.
guard1 4/9/2014 3:53:04 PM Report

So city council suggested that Puc reimburse the east enders for the brown water hardships. Kind of funny that what will actually happen is that the Sault water users will shoulder the cost of the repairs to deal with the brown water. City council does not push back against these Puc issues. Levies, tax increases, infrastructure costs, puc costs increases to name a few. How much more can the taxpayer take.
NB113 4/9/2014 3:57:39 PM Report

Brita filters do not filter the brown water which comes from the Lorna well. It will still be brown after it passes through the filter. The only option for drinking is filtering enough water ahead of time or buying bottled.
whitefeathers 4/9/2014 5:35:49 PM Report

Brita Filters do clear brown water but it only works about 3 times @ 48 ounces. This 3 pots of coffee, then you have to get new filter for $9.00 at C.Tire.
block 4/9/2014 5:57:32 PM Report

I would not be surprised if there next move is to try and slip fluoride into the water next
NB113 4/9/2014 7:11:30 PM Report

Brita filters do NOT filter the brown water from Lorna. I use brand new filters and they do NOT filter out this rusty water. Zerowater systems are supposed to work but I have not tried them as they are expensive and not widely available.

NB113: Thank you....

If Brita Filters didn't work for you, then ask for our money back.

Sorry to say I and my family who are also on Government Road (they have iron/rusty water) have proved it worked.

Plus I don't yell which is using(Capital letters).

I'm not here to debate you how filters work.

May concerns are the water, plus I have been using the filters and giving the waters to my Budgies whom live to be 16yrs old.

I don't understand why puc doesn't just flush the system at the end of the line, open a main valve, out with the bad, in with the good. it wouldn't cost the homeowner anything extra, and it would keep the brown stuff from even going into the water pipes in your home. maybe everyone should just go outside your house, and open the hydrants all over the east end at the same time, to help the puc from having to do it. were a community, lets help them out.
bulletcards 4/10/2014 11:07:38 AM Report

the PUC was told to make ammends to the residents. this is what they do. kinda funny
Prrrrrrr 4/10/2014 8:47:33 PM Report

My brown water is now kind of orange...still this way after flushing the pipes...
