Get vaccinated against measles

Saturday, April 05, 2014   by: Staff

With confirmed cases of measles in Ontario, Algoma Public Health is holding clinics for those parents who need to get their children caught up on their vaccination.

The measles virus spreads easily from person to person and characteristic symptoms include fever and a red, blotchy rash that begins on the face and spreads down the body.

Measles is a highly contagious disease and can be very serious, with complications including ear infections and pneumonia, and in rarer cases encephalitis and death.

The best protection against measles is vaccination with two doses of measles-containing vaccine.  In Ontario, 1 dose of Measles, Mumps and Rubella (MMR) vaccine is given after the first birthday, with a 2nd dose given between 4-6 years of age.

Children who have not received the recommended number of doses of MMR vaccine should be vaccinated in order to ensure they are fully protected against measles.

In Sault Ste. Marie, measles immunization catch-up clinics are being held in April.

For an appointment, please call 705-541-7085.

Your child can also receive this free vaccine from their family health care provider.

For appointments in Blind River, Elliot Lake, or Wawa, please call 1-866-402-1193.

Appointment lines are open Monday – Friday from 9 a.m. – 4 p.m.

If you have any questions about MMR vaccine or your child’s immunization record, please call 705-759-5409 or 1-866-892-0172 ext. 5409 to speak with a nurse in the Vaccine Preventable Diseases Program.

I'm not a fan the vaccine announcement on sootoday but I do give them credit for backing the medical marijuana movement and advertising the "TORONTO VAPORIZER" ad campaign constantly
Pakadeva 4/5/2014 12:47:10 PM Report

I had measles when I was little, with 3 of my siblings, we were so very sick that I still remember that, so, personally, I would prefer the jab over the measles. Let everyone decide for themselves, we live in a free country.

the anti-vaccination crowd is the dumbest, most ignorant group of people that's ever existed. oh you think your kid is going to become autistic because you read it on some blog? well you're an idiot because that kid is now GUARANTEED a chance to get HUNDREDS of diseases all because you're a stupid parent

not vaccinating your child should be borderline child abuse. you are doing nothing but HURTING everyone around you by being a retard and not getting your child vaccinated
SimsDrum 4/5/2014 1:05:09 PM Report

Hey 'zap'
How about you do some research on the interweb

yes that's it I'll trust a industry that is going to make millions off of this with a product that gets pushed threw the system by the fda without fully knowing any long term side effects, fully loaded with a live virus and whatever fillers they deem necessary.
AlwaysAWinner 4/5/2014 1:28:07 PM Report

yup, make your kids suffer because you believe some ridiculous conspiracy theory

god how are people this stupid? I hope the parents get sick as well as their kids. we have medical research to protect children against terrible diseases and of course, a bunch of redneck dumb parents think its some government BS and don't get their kids the HELP THEY NEED

these people shouldn't be allowed to have children
AlwaysAWinner 4/5/2014 1:31:23 PM Report

if there were any truth to these ridiculous claims, there would be health investigations and a large amount of reform. but guess what? none of it is true. if it was true, it would be proven and the facts would be laid out. when it comes to science, there's only truth and facts. these conspiracy retards have no facts and no truths, just a bunch of ridiculous claims with nothing to back them up

I hope these parents hop on another malaysian flight MH370
SimsDrum 4/5/2014 1:36:26 PM Report

Are you for realsies?!!! This is NOT a new vaccine, it has been around for decades and has kept measles away for a long time. Now a bunch of anti vaccine morons decide to stop vaccinating their children and look what happens... It's coming back! Why don't you go and read a little before you open yer yap!!
sooperman 4/5/2014 1:40:40 PM Report

fluoride, aspartame and bpa are all good for us may take a while but it will be found if it already hasn't I.e. cure for cancer, just no money to be made in cure's
sooperman 4/5/2014 1:44:28 PM Report

todays shots are nowhere near the shots we got as kids in 70/80s and vaccines didn't surface til 50/60's when everything was on decline to begin with
AlwaysAWinner 4/5/2014 1:52:51 PM Report

Jesus another dummy that thinks aspartame causes cancer. get your facts right, it doesn't cause cancer and drinking diet sodas do not cause strokes or cancer or whatever health problems you think it does

I've done my research, I've found ZERO scientific articles published that show any link between aspartame and cancer. yes when you pump aspartame in rats they grow tumors, but the amount they get is the same as us drinking 2,000 cans of diet soda evey day for weeks.

more people believe nonsense on blogs than scientific research. its sad

Big Deal 4/5/2014 5:20:35 PM Report

To AlwaysAWinner...I'm sorry to say but it WAS in fact proven in England that the high amounts of mercury contained in the past MMR vaccinations did contribute to autism. England admitted this!! My children do not have autism, and are in their teens and twenties but when they were young infants I didn't begin their standard vaccinations until they were a little older (1 years old) and their immune system was more developed and stronger. Oh...and by the way, you have WAY to much trust in what your government tells the people. I'm waiting for you to claim the government REALLY does care about the people of this country and not money....which would then make YOU a COMPLETE idiot!!!
Brink99 4/5/2014 6:47:20 PM Report

To Big Deal

The studies in England were done by a man named Andrew Wakefield. His studies have been discredited and his medical licence revoked.

I encourage everyone to read the research just be sure you know how to distinguish between good research and poorly designed studies and manipulated results. Also please get your medical advice from medical professionals not playboy models.
sooperman 4/5/2014 7:19:44 PM Report

I would trust a playboy model over most gov't elected officials and Pharmaceutical companies that are out to reap the benefits of a sick society.. the shots are approved by who, not the dr's that administer them.. and who runs the company that approves the shots, the gov't which is funded by the pharmaceutical company
Lovethenorth 4/5/2014 8:09:10 PM Report

The cold, hard truth is that anyone who does not get their children vaccinated is either ignorant or misinformed (unless the child has some specific health condition such as allergies to vaccine ingredients).

There is ZERO medical evidence linking vaccines to autism. ZERO. Anyone who says otherwise is IGNORANT. The English study that claimed that was shown to be a fraud. Google it!

Vaccinations are the most important public health development in human history. BAR NONE.

We in the western world are spoiled rotten and arrogant. We think that our children are charmed. They are NOT. A century ago, so many families lost many or even all of their children to diseases that are preventable through vaccinations today. I have looked at my family's history....In the 1700s and 1800s, some generations lost something along the order of 10 out of 12 children to diptheria.

My cousin came down with polio in 1955, when he was only 5 years old, just before the polio vaccine came out. He lost the use of his left arm, which never grew after that. Did you know that polio comes back later in life? He died several years ago in a nursing home in his 50s, incapacitated by post-polio syndrome. It was a miserable death.

With each child who is not vaccinated, our society steps closer to an epidemic. Epidemics occur when immunization rates fall below a certain level. The more you encourage others to not vaccinate their children, the closer we come to the next epidemic. People who don't get their kids vaccinated AND urge others to do likewise show complete ignorance of the concept of herd immunity. If not enough kids are vaccinated, then epidemics happen. That is scientific fact. If your child is not vaccinated and you want them to stay safe, then it's in the best interests of your children to urge everyone else to vaccinate their kids. DUH.

And don't think measles isn't dangerous. Measles has killed MILLIONS, most of them children. In the 2000s, the UN initiated a global measles vaccination campaign. It has saved more than 4.3 MILLION lives around the world, again, most of them children. VACCINATIONS. SAVE. LIVES.

If you don't want to vaccinate your kids, fine. Don't come whining to me if one day they get polio. Don't think it can't happen....With every unvaccinated kid, we are inching closer and closer to the brink of epidemic.

And finally....When you vaccinate your kids, you may save the life of someone ELSE. A childhood disease that might not kill them, might kill someone else. When I was pregnant with my second child, they discovered via a blood test that I had lost my immunity to rubella. If some unvaccinated kid had given me rubella, my son would've been born with birth defects.

I'm sorry. That's it. Sooperman you are a complete and utter moron. I suppose you could be a troll but I doubt it! How can you be so ignorant when you have all the info at your fingertips? Please stay in your cave and NEVER come out!!

Injecting with a live virus??? sooper you read the wrong stuff lol....the problem with antivaxxers (i think they are called) say they find tons of stuff to prove their point, but unfortunately the tinfoil society only likes to read things that fit their belief (and only search for things that fit their belief), and anything that states otherwise is properganda. Then they state what is in vaccines and it's all bad for you. The only difference between vaccines then and now is that now we have people with way too much time on their hands with the internet and reading the wrong things. Next we'll hear how chemtrails are real lol
Moon78TA 4/6/2014 1:24:43 AM Report

Also there is a rise in Autism diagnosis because they are starting to understand it more. Before to be autistic you would expect the "Rainman' character, but now they realize their is a full scale of autism that includes fully fuctional autism who can work and go to school, live on their own and take care of themselves, to the very severe case that need full time care.
kamen 4/6/2014 1:28:21 AM Report

I got all those vaccines when I was little, I need to get the tetanus shot this year, it's been 10 years. I won't however get any of the flu shots...everyone who I know that got the shot got severely sick after....they couldn't work for a week and 2 ended up on an iv drip at the way to them, plus the flu strain changes every year...I don't see the point of them...I had the flu this year and I had no fever, just chills and aches and vomiting after I ate...I just kept eating...I got over it in 3 days and I am just I am terrified of needles...luckily I don't have children of my own, but I would definitely get them vaccinated against thing like measles....
Pakadeva 4/6/2014 2:20:54 AM Report

My kids all had their vaccinations & definitely a long way from being autistic. Personally, my line of work requires me to have the flu shot, watching others who haven't had it, they get sick, I don't. I have never gotten a flu from the vaccination. To each his own though!
Lovethenorth 4/6/2014 12:08:56 PM Report

My husband, son and I have all gotten annual flu shots for the last decade or more. Not once has any of us had the flu. It's complete bull that the flu shot causes the flu.

YourFutureNurse 4/6/2014 1:59:17 PM Report

A reason a lot of people don't vaccinate their kids is because they think "why bother when no one gets this illness anymore?" Well the reason no one gets this illness anymore is because years ago people were actually smart and vaccinated their children which prevented outbreaks. Now that people aren't vaccinating their kids we are going to have mass outbreaks and those parents who chose not to vaccinate their children will be the ones regretting it. How many people do you actually know that got autism from vaccinations? Its BS! Vaccinate your kids people or you are risking them becoming very ill because of your own stupidity!!!
lizzardskills 4/6/2014 4:07:43 PM Report

If any of you actually bothered to read what antivaxxers have to say, you would know that the majority are not doing so because of Autism or Jenny McCarthy.

There have been many published studies that prove vaccines aren't all they say to be. Do you believe Drs backing pharmaceutical companies and the government? Or those independent who did studies. This is where our government is missing the point. People don't trust dirty, lying, money hungry pharmaceutical companies plain and simple. Its not about Autism or Jenny any more. The more court cases of people dying, untested government backed immunizations causing death and injury are making people scared. Look at H1N1....healthy children now suffering from narcolepsy all caused by that vaccine.

My daughter is vaccinated, but I get the argument of not doing it.

I heard kids won't get into schools unless they have vaccination records, I sure hope this stands true.

parents should be in jail for child abuse, the amount of stupid you have to be to not get your kid vaccinated is scary. these people shouldn't even be allowed to be parents

let's bring another dumb kid into this world. yeah sure.

I had my shots when i was a kid..but i still got em..i agree with the whole big pharma bs...keep giving us vaccines and pretty soon our bodies wont be able to fight off anything
Moon78TA 4/6/2014 9:19:45 PM Report

so you are against big pharm and you would rather risk your child's health with measles, rubella, polio, et all. And as for your comment how these diseases were on a decline in the 50s/60s WAS BECAUSE OF THE VACCINATIONS!! Not because the human body was naturally getting immune to it.

Lovethenorth 4/6/2014 10:08:52 PM Report

The idea that vaccines disable our ability to fight off illness is ridiculous.

Over the past decade or so, a worldwide measles vaccination campaign has saved an estimated 3.4 million lives. Explain how not vaccinating helps again?
Brietsy 4/7/2014 12:18:45 PM Report

To the people who say that vaccines are bad, and contain things that can hurt you, very indirectly you are right... ish. They do take a live virus sample of whatever they are trying to vaccinate against, or something similar, and then they use compounds to make it less dangerous. Like a lot less dangerous. Becuase you have "gotten" a beat up, halfway dead polio virus in your system, your body knows what to look for. all the "bad things" in vaccines are designed to beat down the virus so much that even a newborn's Immune system can take it out, making the person more prepared for a serious case later.
lizzardskills 4/7/2014 3:36:09 PM Report

@moon how do you know that leukemia or rheumatoid, childhood diabetes or even Alzheimer's disease wasn't caused by vaccines? It is completely plausible that some diseases could have been triggered by an immune event such as immunization.

As for the comments about putting your child at risk for polio or measles etc... or shooting them with live virus, foreign chemicals and risk brain damage, paralysis, narcolepsy, death etc..

Doctors have said for a long time that all these diseases we vaccinate for will come back! A different strain and probably worse. One we won't be protected from.

People born before 1970's have a NATURAL immunity to measles. Any one after that time period does not. In fact if you are over 20 you probably have low or no immunity to measles if you had your mmr as a child. You have to and will continue to havr to get boosters. Whose to say an adult with no immunity passed this along instead????
