CUPE wants David to address Davey Home cuts

NEWS RELEASE

CUPE

***************************
Call on MPP Orazietti to act

Significant cuts to residents’ care at the FJ Davey Home are “extremely worrisome,” say resident family members and front line nursing and personal care staff.

They will be holding a media conference (today) at noon at the Sault Ste. Marie Delta Waterfront Hotel to review the impact of recent nursing and staffing cuts on resident care levels.

Corrado Bruni whose father has lived at FJ Davey for the last year, Canadian Union of Public Employees (CUPE) Ontario, secretary-treasurer Candace Rennick, a former nursing home worker, will join FJ Davey personal support worker (PSW) Alison Caul, at Wednesday’s media conference.

There is widespread agreement among families, nursing home operators and front line workers that care levels for residents must increase, says Rennick.

“We are all advocating with the provincial government for more funding for resident care and staffing levels to increase. What is happening at the Davey home with these cuts is that residents will get less care. That’s just not acceptable. Not to us, and certainly not to the family members who want the best care possible for their loved one."

"We are optimistic that local MPP, David Orazietti will find a way to deliver better funding to the FJ Davey Home so that these cuts to resident care levels will be rescinded and care levels will be enhanced, not cut.”

With an obvious aging population we need more funding...not less, This is just one more example of how we taxpayers are paying the price for the Liberal mismanagement of this province .Imagine the care that could be given with the 1.1 billion wasted on those gas plants .Algoma U just got over 2 million for an upgrade to a sports facility. I would like to see that kind of money spent at the Davey rather than on sports.
AlwaysAWinner 4/2/2014 9:24:53 AM Report

this guy does a TERRIBLE job at requesting additional funding

not only does he ask for MORE when he's told there will be cuts (you at least fight for the same funding, not argue for MORE when your funding is already up for cutting) he does a terrible job at selling what the additional money will do. no mention of equipment purchases, room expansions, food, nothing. just "they will get less care. that's not acceptable".

sounds like we need people that can justify costs and not people asking for more money because they "want it".

Maybe Soo Foundry can help??
Intwydimayla69 4/2/2014 9:37:52 AM Report

Perhaps an FOI into the OLG and the ROI for the hundreds of millions spent thus far for "Modernization". If you think the 'Gas Plant' is the only scandal running, think again....Top of the chain should be severed and the entire organization cleaned of the poison that exists within its ranks.

It is a polluted cesspool of closed minded out of date yesteryear bullies, holding each others hands and waiting for that rainbow of dreams to set them on their merry way into a golden retirement.

The money they have spent thus far, comes from the pockets of every individual that plays the games and frequents the establishments they currently operate. The entire idea of "Modernization" is flawed in its design and evident wholly in its current state, which is basically a standstill. That money could have done a lot for a great many different organizations throughout the Province. IMHO.

David O has no say in budgets.
R0FL0L 4/2/2014 10:22:11 AM Report

AlwaysAWinner, they mean just that "care" CARE = the time = minutes a PSW, RPN or even the RN is spending with the client = elderly = your mom = your dad. like for personal CARE = washing, getting dressed, grooming = shaving= combing hair= braiding a ponytail, helping with make up (a bit of lipstick makes some feel so much better), brushing dentures, helping putting them back in and with this applying a bond so they don't flip around when they chew, feeding, WALKING assistance to the bathroom!!! and also attends change. May I need go on? So CARE= TIME = more Staff.
with this yes, saying "they will get less care. that's not acceptable" is an acceptable way to ask for more funding
shorty38 4/2/2014 10:26:06 AM Report

what do you mean "David O has got nothing to do with budget" can he not speak up?? does he not have a vote in the house?? we know he is a Liberal puppet, but he does have a voice.
hawkeye 4/2/2014 10:30:50 AM Report

why is CUPE only complaining about cuts to the Davey home? every nursing home in town has had its funding cut.
Nate'sMom 4/2/2014 10:33:03 AM Report

What about the cuts at the Finnish Rest home, Mapleview or Van Daele? I'm positive that these other nursing homes have also witnessed decrease in care as they have all cut hours of PSW's, and nurses. These residents deserve just as much recognition and care as Davey home residents, do they not? I think perhaps David O's government needs to answer to all cuts in care, not just answering to one nursing home's cuts. How is it considered even remotely ok that a criminal in jail receives better care than our beloved seniors that have contributed to society and whose family's have to pay for them to get half assed care. One shower a week! Rushed through daily routines and little exercise! This provinces government disgusts me more and more each and every day!
social butterfly 4/2/2014 10:50:56 AM Report

I told my mom to robb a bank, she would get better care. But no would she listen. They should reverse the funding. Allow less funds for those who commit crimes and more for the seniors who paid their own way and deserve better. When will society learn.
Gurpy 4/2/2014 11:01:41 AM Report

Social Butterfly
You nailed it! Stop catering to CRIMINALS and start caring for the ones who need it! This government actually recognizes the rights of someone incarcerated before that of someone who has never seen a parking ticket! BACK WARDS MENTALITY is what it is called and it needs to STOP NOW!
Gurpy 4/2/2014 11:19:54 AM Report

WILL SOMEONE, ANYONE CALL AN ELECTION? We need people in power that CARE about the people of this province! Their bank accounts should NOT be first on their agenda! This province is going to hell in a hand bag! Only the taxpayers and voters can stop it!I know only too well how our seniors and disabled are treated! They are not able to fight for themselves, that leaves US!!
Tills 4/2/2014 11:23:09 AM Report

HERE HERE social butterfly.. Take the money from the jails and give it to the Seniors!! Maybe if jail wasn't a resort the thought of going back would be a deterrent!!
Resident 4/2/2014 11:24:34 AM Report

social butterfly and Gurpy: Will you be attending a summit? If we happen to meet at one remind me to tell you some personal incidents about this subject. I'm sure you all will have input also!
?????? 4/2/2014 11:29:32 AM Report

I'm not sure whether CUPE is affiliated with the other nursing homes and retirement homes mentioned above, which may be why they only mentioned the Davey Home.
Gurpy 4/2/2014 11:48:52 AM Report

Tills
Growing up I had a friend whose dad was a guard at the old Burwash Prison. The inmates ate better than people working full time or even two jobs. They`d break out so they`d get caught and get a longer sentence! They had a brand new gymn, t.v`s all sorts of privileges! That`s our judicial system here in Canada! Reward bad behavior and allow the innocent to suffer! Perhaps if we began treating our criminals the way we do our seniors or disabled, the crime rate would drop?
hawkeye 4/2/2014 1:04:15 PM Report

CUPE and OPSEU need to work together instead of seperatly to get anywhere with this issue.
Frio 4/2/2014 1:40:57 PM Report

Gurpy your're right up to date on inmates getting better treatment than seniors..Burwash Industrial Farm closed 39 years ago in Feb. 1975. The prisoners actually had to work back then.It was a self contained community/ farm, industrial complex where they grew their own food, butchered their livestock for meat, did all the kitchen and cleaning jobs, maintained staff and prison housing and grounds. Back then most families looked after their own senior parents instead of sticking them in "retirement home".I know our family did.
pruden 4/2/2014 2:34:22 PM Report

May be, just may be other nursing home care givers should become unionized then as a solid voice you may (thats a big May), be heard. Too much bashing of unions these days until people start loosing their rights and jobs then suddently people ask "Where are the unions"
Gurpy 4/2/2014 2:49:46 PM Report

Frio
In 1975 I was very young. Inmates are still treated better than our seniors and disabled today in 2014. Not all families are able to avoid placing loved ones in facilities. I don`t know of many who can afford 24hr in home nursing care while they are at work all day.
The fact remains that the Liberals are and have been doing a HORRIBLE job!
Why do you always pick on me???
Weazzy23 4/2/2014 3:00:18 PM Report

We at the Davey Home have stood up and are asking the question about cuts, we have asked CUPE to stand with us, if the other places wanted to do the same they need to stand up for themselves, we cannot fight their battles.
Pakadeva 4/2/2014 3:11:11 PM Report

For hawkeye & all:
CUPE and OPSEU were working together for Mondays rally/demonstartion in front of Bryan Hayes office, workers for all over town, but, particularly the Davey Home & The hospital were in attendance. TODAY for the televised portion, CUPE for the Davey Home was the union/home, who organized this meeting...other homes can do that as well, but this one specifically was arranged by the Davey Union & workers, other homes should do the same. Posters who mentioned cutting expenditures for criminal care & giving back to elder care, you nailed it!! Let inmates who committed crimes suffer cutbacks, more hotdogs, less roast beef might deter some. The elders deserve care far superior to what these criminals get, yet criminals are in glass houses with the best of everything to eat, gyms, etc., heaven forbid that the rapist, thief, pedophiles, etc., come anywhere close to suffering as much as some of our elders. Read that! Re-read that! Yes, it is definitely entirely backwards thinking. Hours are begged for not for money, but, to have time to give the proper care to your Mom or Dad & more hours were needed LONG before the cuts were brought forward. It is a disgrace that our elders get very minimal care while our criminals live like royalty. Reverse this Mr. Orazetti!
Upping the wages for the very heavy overload of work is definitely in order as well. Do that work for a day & you will have an entirely different attitude!
dj0325 4/2/2014 10:48:02 PM Report

CUPE is fighting for us the members and they represent us workers who work at the Davey Home. Yes the other homes are being cut and the other homes also have their own unions to. So their union needs to take a stand for them, and join the fight. TIME TO CARE
social butterfly 4/2/2014 11:58:42 PM Report

I agree with everyone putting pressure on David O. and the government to give the homes more staff. People are living longer, more dementia patients, more people with limited mobility and behavioural problems. Care for these patients take time. Everyone is responsible to make people realize we are all going to be there some day. The residents council, staff and family council of these homes must and need to be the voice. Come on people let us be that voice. Make your voice be heard.
learningaswego 4/3/2014 9:31:10 AM Report

While they're at it, CUPE should DEMAND the Libs plant at least two more money tree orchards, because the money has to come from somewhere to pay for it, right? Wait, that's not where?

Oh yeah, more taxes!

or just throw more debt on our children and grandchildren, and hope they don't notice.
