Federal cuts to residential school survivors support insensitive: Hughes

Tuesday, April 01, 2014   by: SooToday.com Staff

NEWS RELEASE

CAROL HUGHES, NDP ABORIGINAL HEALTH CRITIC

*************************
End of Truth and Reconcilliation Commission Hearings doesn't signal end to the needs of residential school survivors: Hughes

OTTAWA - Victims of Residential Schools will no longer be able to turn to special services designed specifically to match their needs now that Health Canada is cutting the Resolution Health Support Program, according to NDP Aboriginal Health Critic, Carol Hughes.

The Resolution Health Support Program provided Cultural and emotional support as well as professional counselling and assisted with transportation when necessary.

Hughes was echoing the concerns of Justice Murray Sinclair, who headed the Truth and Reconciliation Commission, that these services are being terminated while there is still a strong need for them.

“The Conservatives are preparing to cut the program that provided mental health support to former students of Indian Residential Schools,” Said Hughes.  This does nothing to support reconciliation.”

Hughes said the Prime Minister promised honest reconciliation as part of the historic 2008 Residential School Apology but has changed his tune and is now leaving individuals to fend for themselves.

The MP for Algoma-Manitoulin-Kapuskasing notes that the need for special support services will persist despite the line in the sand drawn by Health Canada and feels the government owes it to survivors, especially those who testified at hearings, to ensure the support is available to match that need.

“How insensitive can the government be? It took great strength and courage for survivors to come forward and participate in Truth and Reconciliation hearings.’” said Hughes.   “Will the government do the right thing, reverse their decision and maintain funding to the Resolution Health Support Program in order to meet the needs of survivors?"

The Truth and Reconciliation Commission wrapped up hearings over the weekend in Edmonton and is scheduled to report on its findings in 2015.

Since when has the government ever been sensitive?

It was the churches, mainly the Catholic Church who operated the residental schools who provided the priests, nuns, and other staff who where abusing the children.. Why isn't the government going after the them for millions of dollars in compensation for the damages they caused?

Good old Hughes always jumps on board...must be looking for a job with the Natives like Bob Rae.

Hmmm... You don't seem to be moaning when your government gives hundreds of millions of dollars to the Ukraine. Which is now Russia.

Here's a layman's terms of the Indian Act. I'm not native myself but it is interesting. Let's see how long it stays on this page...

Why not get a job with the natives they have all the monies with well over 66 trillion dollars in trust that is the estimate for Ontario alone they meaning natives maybe the only ones who will have any cash to pay people with after all the law suites are done over the contaminated waters. Lake Michigan is now poluted by the radio active waste from over sea's and it did not take long to wash ashore to our fresh body of waters.
GREED got in the way people now we all will suffer and who will be holding the bag???? The real question is who will be alive to even know if there is a bag to hold????
the_mage 4/1/2014 7:42:44 PM Report

Hmm, interesting to think. I'm on my to Chummy's for some great food, cigarettes and bingo...

I wonder how it will work when the natives start their own tax Sooites and the rest of Canada for eating, smoking and gambling on their land?

Unfortunately it was the Government of Ontario and the Government of Ontario in that time that gave the power to ANTI Christ churches ( I say anti Christ is because Christ would not do to those poor kids what they the church did to those children) to do what they did. I am a conservative but on this one I have to say leave those monies alone. Every survivor deserves those benefits.

Mr Harper can say we the country of Canada are sorry for the suffering we caused your people. Oh I am sorry Mr Harper and Canada you show have more respect for those who migrate to Canada then you do the natives of this land I wonder if I were to join the RCMP could I wear a traditional head dress or wear a warriors breast plate oh dear I do not praise Allah I praise the creator. Or let me see are you going to respect our women and grant them the respect our teachings and religious beliefs say they deserve oh I am sorry how rude of me we are not of the accepted religions but others can come to our Canada and are allowed to demand that there religious beliefs are respected how come you don't allow the church to beat them for not worshipping your jesus , or taking there childern away from them and teaching them what language they should and shouldn't speak I wonder why it is acceptable to still treat Indians with disregard . truly you are not sorry or maybe it just sounded good at the time. You should have told my grandmother and her mother and many other Indian peoples
your lies cause a lot of them lived lies and hid because it was not right to be who they were or worship and believe what they believed .

the catholic church not the tax payer should be on the line for this bill. the catholic church is the wealthiest organisation in the world. they can't even gauge how many billions because the church won't full disclose. the cathlic church and their figure heads ae all criminals
Sammy1099 4/2/2014 6:59:13 AM Report

I do sympathise with the natives they do have some valid complaints. However the churches having Chester the molesters didn’t limit their abuse to just Natives. They did that all over the planet and didn’t discriminate based on race in that regard. The government of the time bears some responsibility in facilitating it but ultimately the church is responsible.

As far as the government taking kids away this isn’t exclusively a native issue it is a bureaucratic cluster f*ck on the part of governments. I can give even a recent example. My sister’s son mentioned in school that he was afraid of his daddy. That little comment resulted in a year of visits from child protective services. For the record my sister’s kid has never even been spanked (even though in my opinion the kid needs it once in a while) and is a spoiled brat.
Kweveye 4/2/2014 4:44:00 PM Report

wasnt it the gov that instructed the churches to do what they did and then the churches took advantage of the situation and it all goes downhill from there cause everyone would turn a blind eye and pretend it didnt happen.
Big Deal 4/3/2014 5:45:16 PM Report

It was a horrible tragedy and no one should never forget, but to live in the past is not healthy and one will never heal and be able to move forward if they do so. One shouldn't rely on the government for anything, especially their well being and anyone who does will ALWAYS be told what they are entitled to and what they are not. That is one's choice and the way things are going....what would one do when the day comes (and I'm sure it will be sooner than later) when ALL funding is abolished completely. EVERYTHING is getting cut back EVERYWHERE...
