NEWS RELEASE

MICHAEL MANTHA, MPP

*************************
Queen’s Park – Today Michael Mantha, MPP for Algoma-Manitoulin and NDP Northern Development and Mines Critic, said the Premier shouldn’t be using an appearance in Sault Ste. Marie to excuse herself from serious questions about the gas plant scandal.

“Northerners want answers from the Premier as much as every Ontarian. That’s the least she can offer by doing her job and being present during Question Period,” Mantha said.

While the Liberal government is facing an OPP investigation into criminal offenses surrounding the gas plant scandal, the Premier was absent from Question Period today and attended an announcement in Sault Ste. Marie with two Northern cabinet ministers.

A CTV report in Sault Ste. Marie today says the venues that hosted the Premier’s announcement were informed only on Saturday about the Premier’s appearance.

According to the report, it was a “last minute” arrangement.

That runs contrary to what the Deputy Premier said today.

Deb Matthews claimed the Premier’s appearance in Sault Ste. Marie was scheduled long in advance.

“The Premier is facing new and serious allegations about the gas plants scandal that she needs to answer. This last minute arrangement made to spirit the Premier to Sault Ste. Marie is yet another example of government cover-up and another example of this government’s disrespect towards Northerners. The Premier used the people of Sault Ste. Marie to hide from her government’s scandal,” Mantha said.

“The Premier has shown very poor judgment in using Sault Ste. Marie to dodge questions at Queen’s Park. It’s obvious today’s government announcement could have been made by either of the two Ministers present; one of which represents Sault Ste. Marie. It’s shameful the Premier chose the North to hide from her responsibilities.”

In the first question period following the release of the Gas Plant OPP warrant information, the Premier chose not to attend question period.

In protest, New Democrats walked out of Question Period.

“Northerners and all Ontarians deserve answers, but they’re not coming from this government. The Premier has refused a public inquiry, and now she’s refusing to show up for work to answer questions. That’s not acceptable,” Mantha said.

“We expect the Premier to show respect to Northern families and families across Ontario, by answering questions about the new information concerning the gas plants scandal and the cover-up," Mantha said.

The dippers might as well stay at home as they don't have the stones to do anything other than whine and moan. Mantha shouldn't be in a hurry for an election as it will be his last.
Alphie 3/31/2014 4:44:17 PM Report

The NDP has had countless times to bring down this so called crooked govt. and has chosen not too. Wow now they walk out of question period. What a joke who's worse the corrupt or the people who allow the corrupt to remain in power.
Mr. Poster 3/31/2014 5:06:54 PM Report

It is hard to know who is telling the truth. I fault the NDP for keeping these Libs alive. SHAME ON THEM. Horwath is no better than anyone else...she is an opportunist...waiting for that magic moment that will benefit HER.
Bad Dawg 3/31/2014 5:07:02 PM Report

I'm sure she will spend even more of our tax dollars on ads saying how honest and great she is. They will continue to run and will not stop until she believes it herself!! Harper has spent over 500 million on those Action Plan ads..... think of how many roads could be fixed for half a billion dollars!!

Gater 3/31/2014 6:38:27 PM Report

Wow .. Now all a sudden the NDP is concerned about the liberal Gov.
Well Mr.Mantha you have all kinds of chances to bring down the Lib gov. but now with an election looking in the near future your on the band wagon posturing for re election..
I think most of the voters can see through this .
I am voting Liberal as there is absolutely no doubt they are crooks. so there will be no surprises any more with a NEW Party in power. This alone will save Millions of tax payer dollars.

CDIC72 3/31/2014 6:44:43 PM Report

Very true Gater. wonder what would happen if nobody showed up on election day.
Sam C 3/31/2014 7:19:44 PM Report

Cry babies! I'm not a big fan of Wynne or the Liberals, but...

1) They knew the premier was on the road today -- or did they not get the memo?

2) The OPP report is, at this point, just allegations. The Premier hasn't been charged with a crime. She can respond in the legislature when she gets back.

3) This is silly, puerile political game-playing on their part.

Sadly, these will be our choices in the next election.
