How you can assist with snow removal

Monday, March 31, 2014   by: SooToday.com Staff

NEWS RELEASE

CITY OF SAULT STE MARIE

*************************
In order to continue with its snow removal program, the City of Sault Ste. Marie Public Works and Transportation Department (PWT) is asking residents to refrain from parking on city streets and roadways, whenever possible, during the day and overnight until April 30.

“City Works crews are working to remove the snow and ice that we still have on our roadways; however, the presence of parked cars on streets is making this process difficult. I would ask residents to please assist us by keeping their vehicles parked in their driveways and off the streets, whenever possible,” says Larry Girardi, Commissioner, Public Works and Transportation.

The City reminds residents that notwithstanding any other provision of Traffic By-law 77-200, no person shall park or stand a vehicle on a street in such a manner as to interfere with the movement of traffic or clearing of snow from the street (Section 8).

The Public Works and Transportation Department appreciates the cooperation of citizens with this request.

For more information, contact PWT at 705-759-5201.

I'll watch it melt and save a whole bunch of money.
saultbie25 3/31/2014 6:22:30 PM Report

Even with no cars on the road they do a shitty half fast job and don't even mark where the drains are.

My road was just done....... once all winter. These people who take care of the roads (plowing, repairs, sanding) have done a very very poor job. Also favouritism in many areas has occurred.
Gater 3/31/2014 6:30:05 PM Report

Oh contraire. The Board of works employees are doing a great Job winter the winter road maintenance. Thanks to you all ......
damzull1 3/31/2014 6:35:30 PM Report

The parking bylaw is not to park on city st. between nov. 30 and march 30 and now they still blame us for there petatic snow removal if they would have done something in the first place maybe they wouldn't have that problem but they should worry more about the damn pot holes that destroys your car the heck with the snow removal to late to worry about that now, there always behind dont matter what they do there a bunch of lazy bum's
Sammy1099 3/31/2014 6:36:20 PM Report

If you want your snow removed after a plow or grader goes by just call the city they will dispatch a crew to shovel it for you.

My neighbor did this twice, I couldn't believe it. They say if the plow puts a pile more then 2ft high at the bottom of your driveway the city will remove it. Funny thing is the times I seen them remove my neighbors it wasn't even 1ft let alone 2.
OH IT'S ME AGAIN 3/31/2014 6:40:59 PM Report

This city's winter snow mtce. crews do an EXCELLENT job and anyone who complains about it walk around with an attitude of entitlement which tells you much about their character and personality.
Not my type of person,,,go away............
missmya 3/31/2014 6:44:23 PM Report

Maybe they should consider being a little more lenient on enforcing the parking by-law during years when there's no snow in March instead of going for the cash grab in issuing parking tickets.
Voxboy876 3/31/2014 6:48:25 PM Report

City does a great job.
Saultbie.
You're the bummer dude at the party that everyone says "who invited this guy??"

lol
CDIC72 3/31/2014 6:48:46 PM Report

if they have not done their job then why are all the snow dumps full. the pile of snow behind total tire on bruce st is massive. it must have got there on its own.
happy camper 3/31/2014 6:49:41 PM Report

Well saultbe if your road was only done once you must not work ! Because you would not have been able to get off your street ! So you must have sat on your ass all winter long and cried into a towel hopeing that the great snow ferry would remove all the snow. I think they did a great job for what fell thru the winter. Im glad that they were there to do thier job. It might have been late sometimes but it was allways done . So Stop your crying get off your ass and do something!
kodak11 3/31/2014 6:55:57 PM Report

I too think the city has done a good job, just the dump trucks with plows dont do the job a grader does.As far as not parking on the street, thats a good idea cuz alot of streets are barely 2 cars wide.....anyways good job city plows, almost time to switch to pothole detail.
guestwho 3/31/2014 6:57:15 PM Report

so if you get caught parking on the streets between nov.1-mar31 ,snow or no snow, you get fined, and now they ask for help outside that timeline!!Will they remember that next Nov. or just screw you whether snow is in the forcast or not.
Verbatim 3/31/2014 6:59:56 PM Report

the city is stating that it is over budget....so why spend all the money on snow removal, when all we have to do is let it melt. They are spending money to move it from one place to another place only to have it melt there. This truly makes no sense and if there is anyone on here that works for the city maybe you can explain it or get someone from the city to explain this logic
saultbie25 3/31/2014 7:11:34 PM Report

I do work full time, I have 4x4 and giver out of my driveway most days, I also see my neibour have to call someone to pick her up or I'll take her.

The people who say they're doing a great job must live in those areas where favoritism is in effect. I can count on man occasions my street and neibouring streets have not been done but I head east and all has been done perfectly, then when it does get removed from mine its a half fast shitty job.

I've called many times and complained. I've even called the mayor, then it got done.

Oh there's also massive holes In my area as well as significantly lifted pavement.

Just driving downtown by the board walk I felt like I was in Europe having to drive on the wrong side because the massive chunks of pavement missing, can't even call them pot holes. Not fkkng my truck up for that.

I'm simply explaining what I see, from my view. No need to insult me. Grow the f up!
Mike58 3/31/2014 7:13:25 PM Report

Right On Verbatim !!!
Let the snow melt. Doesn't cost a cent.
saultbie25 3/31/2014 7:14:02 PM Report

Also I'm referring to all snow removal specifically cutting down snowbanks. That was only done once.
Sam C 3/31/2014 7:16:00 PM Report

Verbatim... unfortunately, if the City doesn't continue with bank removal, people will complain. Of course, people complain whether they are doing snow removal or patching potholes.

Others have said it, and I've said it before... and I'll say it again: our City crews do an AMAZING job of snow removal. No, its not perfect. It's winter in northern Ontario, and especially this year, we got snow like we haven't seen in twenty years.

But if anyone doesn't think our crews did a great job, you need to go visit other cities and see how we compare.
Sammy1099 3/31/2014 7:23:54 PM Report

saultbie25

" I have 4x4 and giver out of my driveway most days, I also see my neibour have to call someone to pick her up or I'll take her. "

Then they must be leaving more then 2ft at the bottom of your driveway. Call the city they will remove the snow if it's over 2ft. They've done it for my neighbor a couple of times and it was only about a foot. I don't know maybe it's because he lives on the east end. They don't provide this service to the west end?
rgp 3/31/2014 7:26:41 PM Report

i think the city plow trucks and sanders did a great job this winter plus a shout out to puc workers for doing a good job in this long winter
Lleoy 3/31/2014 7:30:44 PM Report

Verbatim,

The city is removing the snow in key areas to avoid flooding, open key catch basins, and thaw frozen culverts where there is potential for property damage due to water.

Saultbie25

Your not a priority, your comments are idiotic. Don't say anything till you walk a mile in there shoes.

People who say that the city has done a great job this winter must be drinking coke a lot of coke lmfao.I work 3 jobs and had a tuff time getting around all winter from the beginning with the freezing rain day when the only salt I seen was in a salt shaker at lunch time. lake street I believe was like bumper cars and city had lots of accidents to my knowledge, great job indeed then the snow came and came roads and sidewalks were left undrivable and no where to walk seen many people walking down roadways and put it this way I don't need to go to searchmount to ski my mountain at end of drive way is huge enough all I need is s ski lift to get to top now the snow is going from our streets I have been to garage 2 times. Ball joints and tie rods replaced from all the great huge potholes from the rainstorms of fall of 13 that still haven't been repaired I am sick and tired from our city officials who say we have done a great job when I called to discuss how they were going to pay for my damages to vehicle they did not return my call a few days later I was walking down the street nice quiet neighborhood of gore street when I fell in a pothole 2 feet deep. I have come to conclusion that sign when u enter city should read welcome to best maintained city of Sault ste marie

they really do a shitty job at cleaning the snow banks or not at all they cleaned a lot of the streets around my street but never came down my street to clean up the banks there is at least a 9 foot snow bank in my front yard and its gonna cause an accident 1 of these days the taxes every 1 pays is enough to have it done but they would rather give the people in city hall a raise instead of using the money for what they should and then complain about the budget we need a new mayor LOL

soowat 3/31/2014 8:44:48 PM Report

Gee we've had the worst winter in several years. Because of that, the city crews couldn't get around to shoveling your sidewalk brushing off your cars or sweeping your deck. The city asked you to get off your lazy fanny and do something for yourself. Also there was a need for you to kwitcherbitchin and man up. Alternatively, they could have hired more people, but the bitching over the tax increase would have been long and loud
OH IT'S ME AGAIN 3/31/2014 8:46:40 PM Report

Attention all Councillors:
Please consider banning parking on all streets year round and all the issues go away and driving would be safer for all, including pedestrians.
saultbie25 3/31/2014 8:54:56 PM Report

Everyone's ignorance is disturbing.

Obviously people who think they have done a good job must be in their own breaking bubble In the east end.

Should I remind people that the highway has been the worst in my lifetime. Even with the amount of snow it was not sanded and was closed a lot more. Its about the city not budgeting enough money and having a surplus for the what if.

My complaints are valid and all the ignorant undereducated people need to open their eyes and stop living in their bubble for goodness sakes.

I state my opinion, I get called names, bullied and unwanted ignorant comments. Shame on all of you.

Oh its me again.

Why don't you give me your name so I can personally hit you with a shovel.

I never once said the city was in charge of the highways. The city to my clear understanding from what I have been told by the mayors office, aweres township and Fenwick township, prince township that the city does pay for a portion of snow removal. So unless the townships people are misinformed my information is correct.
twin75 3/31/2014 9:16:48 PM Report

i live on a corner lot so i get dumped on when they plow. i got a pile dumped there of hard ice chunks about a month ago, couldn't shovel it. I called the City 6 times to come and remove it and it took them 2 weeks to get there! i had to shovel just enough to get my car off the road, or else i would've got fined for parking there! Usually they do a good job, but this winter i found snow removal horrible!
Frio 3/31/2014 9:41:05 PM Report

Considering the amount of snow and the many snowfalls this winter the city did a good job of keeping the streets and sidewalks plowed. The big banks where removed about a month ago on the main artery street in my east end area and a grader was used to scrape down the residential street with a truck and payloader to clear away the big ridge of snow plowed up across the driveways.I walk a lot and see idiots that snowblow or shovel their snow into the street and the sidewalk instead of keeping it on their property. They are too lazy and inconsiderate to keep the fire hydrants clear of snow in front of their properties or keep the leaves and garbage off the storm drains so the water can drain off the street or pick up the crap after their dogs..So many people spend all their time bitching about the services they receive but won't lift a finger to help out with the simples things right in front of their noses. How many idiots did you see this winter who didn't clean the snow off their vehicles as required by law so they would have proper visibility and others could see their lights to know if they are braking or planning on turning??
Bach 3/31/2014 10:34:46 PM Report

whoever never got plowed this winter, you've been fratesied!!!!
moose23 3/31/2014 10:56:36 PM Report

Total cumulative snowfall reported at the nearest weather station (Sault Ste. Marie Airport) was 361.2 cm this season (Dec/Jan/Feb/Mar) compared to last season: 200.6 cm ... and THIS SEASON WE NEVER HAD A TYPICAL "JANUARY THAW" http://climate.weather.gc.ca/ ... so I think the city has done as good as any municipality could have done with the consistent snowfalls this season.

Grader cleared our street last night, the loader clearing the driveway entrances was a nice and welcome touch; the seniors really appreciate that. Keep up the good work, city workers. Too few of us respond positively, only the jerks, like empty cans, seem to make any noise.

Common sense should tell you to keep your car off the street this time of year! If not, and your car is "missing" call the Police they know where your car was towed to. In keeping with flow of the comments, maybe they should just plow the cars into the snow bank!!

As for the city workers; "Good Job" it can't be easy keeping up this year.
You cleared my street last night; the loader clearing the entrance to the driveways is a nice touch; Much appreciated by the seniors.
You should all get a percentage of the parking tickets handed out; you would probably all make the Sunshine list....ha, ha, ha; and that would be a good thing!!!!!!!

I can't believe some of you people and your comments. I think some of you get off on starting wars during your comments. Grow up, there is enough of that going on in this world.

The city has done, and is doing all that they can do. With the equipment they have and the budget, I think they are doing a great job.

They ask us, (politely I might add) to please try to stay off the streets, so they can do their work, and some of you come back with hostility, immaturity, and anger.

This has been one of the roughest winters in a very long time. Give it a rest people!!!!
Dumb asses like you should really watch the news more often.

@LivenTheDream

Where abouts do you live? Why would the city do all this work on your street etc? Is it prone to flood?

Sorry, trying to wrap my head around the massively confusing city works schedule of activities for snow/ice removal.
saultbie25 4/1/2014 9:53:17 AM Report

Four wheel drive has nothing to do with my complaint.

This issue is the snow banks being removed. Four wheel drive isn't going to help you pull out of your driveway, turn a corner or go through an intersection when you cannot see over and through the 7 foot high and 5 foot wide snowbank.

The issue is the city not doing a fair and good job in all areas clearing snowbanks. Also for road clearing they haven't done a great job. Mediocre at best. Some areas have great roads and have been sanded others have not been done or not done well. My road has not been graded all winter, my snowbanks just removed within the last week (and a poor job of it), my road has not been sanded all the way down and also poor sanding or lack of at the corners. Gaping trenches turning a corner due to poor snow removal,I am stating facts here, not exaggerating, just simply stating what I see

I am not whining, do you see tears and a hissy fit?
Right Winger 4/1/2014 10:36:26 AM Report

I think everyone should park on the street and make city crews work around them.

The way they are so quick to ticket in November is ridiculous. Sure if there is snow that is plowable fine, but when day and night forecasts are for little to no snow? Give me a break!

They always do the crappiest job, like i live downtown n a parking lot is RIGHT in front of my house n they built a HUGE snowbank just mere inches away from my driveway, u have no idea how hard it is trying to back up n try NOT TO GET STUCK. Also, at station mall, they need to put ice or dirt on the parking lots as i have almost fell multiple times this winter due to icy conditions. Not impressed w this city... Not impressed

This was a heavy snow fall year. The city did what they could. Lets not worry about what was done or not about the dawm snow. It is over. Lets hope that the city gets on to repairing the damaged roads in a reasonable time limit. There must be a way out there in this day and age that the city can use to repair the potholes and it lasts more than a few days. quit doing a half ass job and spend the money for patch material that will f-in stay in the hole. You will save in the long run by not sending crews at the same location every three or four days.....
