"He was found to be in possession of a small amount of marijuana and was arrested"

When the Police even call it a "Small amount" it must be really small with their $1000 per oz. pot bust stories.

Legal aid and Court time and cost over a joint or two. Sad day for the tax payers.
Lover 3/27/2014 8:37:35 AM Report

Agreed our police waste their time on the daily
Gater 3/27/2014 8:44:02 AM Report

The Police don't make the Laws they enforce them.
I agree a big waste of money and time with these little possession charges. So call/write your MPP and make some noise about changing the Laws..
they have made progress with this in some U.S states.
Talk where it counts ...
Slim Shady 3/27/2014 9:03:01 AM Report

I am willing to bet that the Police did not come to the residence to search for drugs. They probably were following through something else like probation violation, etc. and the Pot was in plain sight.

When you live the kind of life that involves breaking the law, these things seem to frequently happen to you. A lot of people smoke Pot for personal use and do not get a visit from SSMPS. Call it profiling or whatever, when you break the law on a frequent basis your privacy will go out the window.

SSMPS are enforcing the law and that is their job. It is not a waste of time or money. What is a waste of our money is sending the "Albert and Cathcart Street clowns" through the ever revolving court system doors. I am tired of seeing stuff like "charged with breach of probation x2, x3, x4...."
Fhearghuis 3/27/2014 9:23:28 AM Report

But if it's illegal to have, it's ILLEGAL. Geez...

And on that note, I don't agree with it being legalized, EVER, but I'm in the minority on that one, I guess.

I'm tired of all the 'rule breakers'

If you're NOT supposed to be on your cellphone while driving, DON'T!

The signs say smokers are to be 50 feet from doors. Are they EVER? Another rule not enforced and God forbid someone does. Waste of tax payers dollars and somebody's time. Then get rid of the rule.

Keep letting all the little things slide...and end the end, you'll have a pile of crap!
Fhearghuis 3/27/2014 9:24:25 AM Report

***in the end*** sorry for the typo and I don't know how or if I can edit it.
Poncho55 3/27/2014 9:31:03 AM Report

A waste of time and money! Nice bust, com on, this petty crap has got to stop!
Bearington Bear 3/27/2014 9:33:17 AM Report

@Slim you ever wonder if people get tired of reading your comments on here. One would have to guess that you do not have a job since you seem to have the time to comment on EVERY story that is on sootoday. Go find yourself a job and keep your comments to yourself.

Google Algoma Medicinal Alliance.Might be alot more of that stuff around here.
Slim Shady 3/27/2014 9:47:01 AM Report

Just as a side note... the distance requirement from doors actually varies from province to province (none of them have 50 ft.).... for Ontario:

Smoking prohibited:
-On school grounds
-Within a 9m (27 feet)buffer zone around entrances and exits of hospitals and health care facilities
-In reserved seating areas of outdoor sports arenas and entertainment venues
Smoking permitted on patios with restrictions

@Bearington Bear

Pretty funny comment considering I probably earn more in a week than you earn in a month. Nice try. Go get an education and try working for a living... you can have money too.

You don't like it - move on.

@ Bearington Bear .

People have computers at work and get bored.
B Boy 3/27/2014 10:00:36 AM Report

I think the readers commenting on the petty nature of this charge are missing the big picture - most often charges for small amounts of marijuana aren't laid. These small charges are the exception.

If someone has a clean record, they more often than not won't be charged. Perhaps the police were tired of dealing with this guy and are trying to make a statement. Maybe he was mouthing off, causing trouble.

Before moving to SSM I was a police officer - I loved a large part of it, but it was too difficult on my marriage so I resigned and took a different career. I rarely laid a marijuana charge unless the alleged had a terrible attitude, had a sketchy background of recidivism, or I was trying to make a statement - such as drugs are not tolerated and the area was declining.

In many cities if you ignore small crimes then they will grow - the Soo is no different.
ducky58 3/27/2014 10:06:24 AM Report

Slim Shady it says he was located on Albert St nothing about a residents. So I would say he was likely walking. Read the story right.
Ohwow 3/27/2014 10:24:44 AM Report

It's very refreshing to know slim shady makes sooooo much money. Knowing this, I now know for sure that he/she is better than most. If only we could all be like slim, and have such a mindset, this city would be paradise. It's too bad we can't all make money like slim. If only I could make somebody's monthly paycheque in a few days work..I suppose I'm a horrible, dumb person for not being able to..
Ohwow 3/27/2014 10:26:40 AM Report

I've learned a valuable lesson today from slim shady. Making more money than somebody makes you better, and more smart than them.
Bad Dawg 3/27/2014 10:33:57 AM Report

so because we comment during the day we have no job?? Your a bigger idiot than your post perceives.... I myself have had a few days off during the week and don't go online from work. Why are you on here everyday??
Bad Dawg 3/27/2014 10:37:40 AM Report

and for Mitchell no probation.... straight to rehab!!
Bearington Bear 3/27/2014 10:59:02 AM Report

Oh Slim are the greatest aren`t you! Money has nothing to do with anything anyone said on here....but Ohwow is are better than everyone because you claim to make a good pay check...probably a drug dealer or an informant...but whatever you do maybe you should go and do what you are getting paid for rather than being such an opinionated know-it-all. You really should run for Prime Minister because you seem to have all the answers of how the world should be run. Oh and by the way...I work full time and and have a very good paying job!
ranny 3/27/2014 11:22:52 AM Report

@Slim Shady noticed how it's the people who smokes pot or pot user complains about the law? :)
mallet 3/27/2014 11:24:55 AM Report

What a total waste of time and money, it is time to do what some states are doing , which is legalize and tax it, and use the tax money to help people on hard drugs. The "war on drugs" has been lost, and it is time to take a different approach. I would wager that half if not more of the kids who smoke pot do so because it is illegal. Then perhaps we can begin to stop the petty crime that happens...
Dixiepup 3/27/2014 11:48:50 AM Report

To Ranny,
I'm not a user, never was, but still agree with Mallet. War on marijuana is lost. Legalize it and save that part of the law enforcement budget for more important things.
Bearington Bear 3/27/2014 11:49:14 AM Report

Mallet you are probably right. I am not a drug user and have never so much as came close to trying drugs but I also see that the war on drugs with the law is lost. Concentrate on the hard drugs, the drugs that are totally ruining people`s lives...problem is that it is usually marijuana that people start with, which leads to the harder drugs. it would be really nice to get the drugs off the streets and teach people they can do better and they are worth more than they think they are worth
willoweep 3/27/2014 12:34:45 PM Report

Just for general information Marijuana is not a gateway drug .
Slim Shady 3/27/2014 1:07:45 PM Report

You are correct, I read it incorrectly. While not all residents of that area of Town are career criminals, there seems a disproportionate amount of crime that happens there.

@ Bearington Bear

I am the greatest, Thank you.

While I haven’t run for Prime Minister (yet), I am active in Municipal politics and sit as Chairman on a few Board of Directors. It is not my day job and there is not much money in it. I basically volunteer my time and educational expertise to give back to my community. At least I try to make things better than sitting around and complain about them. As for my day job I am neither a Drug Dealer or Informant. I am not in the Witness relocation Program either. It may be a surprise to you that a person can earn a lot of money legally through hard work and education?

As for money – you mentioned it first inferring that I was unemployed with no life and am not entitled to log on a computer during my coffee break. Shame on me. I must have really offended you in another blog. As for your positive full time employment status, I am happy for you and hope your work is rewarding to you.

@ ranny

Yes I have…. Funny isn’t it?

People with multiple criminal records walk down the street and they get detained….Yet people who are otherwise law abiding citizens who enjoy smoking Pot can walk downtown and not get searched…… Hmmm do you think for one minute that Pot wasn’t the Officer’s issue?

I am glad you learned a lesson but I am unclear what you actually learned. Nowhere was it said that money and self worth were inversely proportional or that they were mutually exclusive.
ranny 3/27/2014 1:24:37 PM Report

@Dixiepup If they do legalize it, there should be law or control. Would you trust someone who's smoking pot driving a vehicle? handling a heavy equipment at work while working around people? I've seen people smoking pot and their delay reaction are slow for a bit. I wouldn't want to work with my friends if they were handling heavy mechanic..... my lives and other peoples are at their hands because they want to smoke pot at work or before work??
Bad Dawg 3/27/2014 2:20:26 PM Report

Ranny.... you need to call our MP or MPP to have all drivers that have a prescription licenses taken away!! They are way more dangerous than a pothead.
Dixiepup 3/27/2014 3:02:01 PM Report

Ranny,, you got a good point. Just like with alcohol, abusers can't be trusted, so regulating it would make sense. Sadly, even hard nose drinkers flout the law too.
