City workers prepared for more snow

Wednesday, March 26, 2014   by: Darren Taylor

With weather statements being regularly issued by Environment Canada, it is possible Sault Ste. Marie and much of Northeastern Ontario will receive a heavy snowfall (perhaps 15 centimetres or more) beginning Thursday morning and extending into Thursday evening.

Environment Canada also states there may also be a transition to rain or freezing rain in Sault Ste. Marie Thursday evening.

These conditions (described in an Environment Canada weather statement issued at 4 p.m. Wednesday) are subject to change of course, but City of Sault Ste. Marie Public Works and Transportation Deputy Commissioner Susan Hamilton Beach, speaking to late Wednesday afternoon, said City crews are at full strength and prepared to deal with the snow.

“It’s not something beyond what we would be able to handle,” Hamilton Beach said.

Hamilton Beach told us the number of Public Works employees for winter maintenance is approximately 120.

The number of Public Works staff subject to lay-off for a four to six week period is typically 19.

“We typically do a layoff of the most junior staff and we are planning for one to be scheduled for this weekend, but as of right now, we are at full forces (to deal with any significant snowfall)”.

Because of the lingering winter conditions we’re experiencing in the Sault this year, City Superintendent of Public Works Mike Lebel has set a full one-month extension to the City’s winter maintenance schedule.

Hamilton Beach said: “What that will mean is, around the clock, forces will be prepared to sand, plow and remove snow to the end of April.”

City trucks were out sanding bare roads last week, I followed one down queen street... while the side streets are a disaster...such a waste of tax payer $ not to mention the excess unnecessary dirt on vehicles....they could have been out filling the numerous pot holes that have over taken roads....I sure hope they saved some sand if and when this storm hits..
annette 3/26/2014 6:53:43 PM Report

Oh No, More snow and no where to put it. How are city workers prepared? Oh I know, if the sidewalk plow can't get around your vehicle and has to go on the road around the boulevard because your yard is plowed to your house with 5 ft snowbanks and the snow on the boulevard is on the sidewalk, and a little VW doesn't fit all the way (and I mean a tire) in your second parking spot you made on your front lawn, they call the police and you get a ticket for parking in your yard? So were guessing from now until March 31, we will be getting a ticket every night, oh no, wait, the sidewalk plow came back and cleared the we might be safe
KMF61MCF 3/26/2014 7:12:42 PM Report

Oh ya the city is prepared what a joke. You never see a plow on the streets during a snow storm they hibernate then peak out and clear the main streets and for get all side streets. They aren't removing snow from side streets because they "LOANED" our huge snow blower out. So i guess that's why our the huge banks aren't getting removed.Unless your related to the CAO, the Mayor or someone in City Hall the road his mom lives on is beautiful no huge 5-8 foot snow banks there.
Javaman 3/26/2014 7:24:33 PM Report

I suspect they are out of money for snow removal of any kind.Stay tuned for record flooding and many basements destroyed.

They are laying off at least 20 people as of friday...So how are they going to deal with things then....We are at full force...Ya for 2 more days....and then when the melt starts....not to mention the potholes that need attention!
TOOLY 3/26/2014 8:01:10 PM Report

I have never seen so many negative people in my life....
Do you have any idea where we would be without the hard work and dedication of all these employees?
iamtc 3/26/2014 8:03:02 PM Report

Even at full force they don't do a good job u can get a monkey and he will pick up a shovel and do a better job this city is a joke and people in charge should not be
iamtc 3/26/2014 8:04:10 PM Report

We would be in paradise if they do a better job

I didn't realize that those who maintain our rinks were considered junior staff ......

Sorry I meant to say outdoor rinks

This city is nothing but a joke!!!! by the way if you were to take some of the salary from our CAO and our police chief and deputy chief we could probably keep ppl working all year round instead of laying them off. And trust me they like to hide out by the marine just at the bottom of Pine st.Half the dam ppl they hire shouldn't even be working there and not only that they like to milk compensation too. Trust me they are terrible.

Please! I'd love to watch some of you complainers to see how many breaks you take during your work day!

Unless you have lived somewhere else, you have no idea what a TERRIFIC job our City Workers do with snow removal. (And no, Toronto doesn't count -- they have nowhere to put snow to start with.)

KMF... they have more than one snowblower, and those crews have been out since mid-January. They won't -- they can't -- get to all 500+ km of roads, but the main routes have been done more than once, and there are many other streets that have been cleared.

Stacey... a lot of those "bare roads" last week had black ice on them. And, the ones that were bare and wet during the warmer day would freeze at night. The sand helps provide some grip.
Norm 3/26/2014 10:28:45 PM Report

Play it again Sam. Sam's blog is a testament to the city workers. They are good, I'm sure. The way Sam blows the city's horn you would think they are the best in the world.
annette 3/26/2014 10:55:29 PM Report

Well actually, I do know how they work, and my comment isn't about the lack there of snow removal, its about there being so much and know where to put it, that I can't even park in my driveway. Instead of the police knocking on my door to tell me my vehicle was over the sidewalk, they ticket my car in my driveway..
Thank you right wing... I've noticed more than once your amass at the bottom of news articles and peoples comments. What ever happened to free speech, that's right that's what you've practised 3/26/2014 8:49:29 PM Report

City needs to look at current conditions not the Calender.(typical example: Load Reduction Period)
Javaman 3/27/2014 8:52:44 AM Report

Are they planning to resurface Great Northern from 2nd to 3rd lines? I hope so...otherwise an alternate route I shall have to find. Pim Hill is also a would think in an election year the ward 2 alderpeople would make sure it gets fixed. I complained once...the city came and filled the potholes and now the hill is a mess again.

If somebody would quit putting snow and water in those potholes, maybe the city workers would be able to "temp" fill them . Don't have to study rocket science to know that asphalt and water / snow do not bond together . For those of you who think this city is such a joke , get off your butt , pack up , try a different city . Might I suggest Sudbury , Thunder Bay or maybe Edmonton for a winter . See you back in a year with a different opinion .
Stacey9 3/27/2014 1:47:00 PM Report

Sam...there was no black ice...I followed the truck all the way up queen from Shannon rd to pine....BONE DRY and NO BLACK ICE!!! I even called the Public Works Department and the girl on the phone was ignorant I didn't bother with an opportunity to recieve a call back ....if that is how I am treated when I call to talk to someone I can't even imagine what the person who called me back would be like...I also am driving throughout the city east to west north to south all day so I am very aware of the road conditions. I wouldn't blame it on the city workers...they get instructions....its those that give the instructions that need some re evaluation!!!!
Lleoy 3/27/2014 4:38:48 PM Report

You are correct, the workers do what they are told. How can the city prepare for more snow, potholes, and blocked catch basins when they are laying off 19 people? If people are slacking off, then once again, its certain management not doing their job. The snow removal is second only to Montreal. Its all about the money.
