Brown water advisory for Wednesday

Tuesday, March 25, 2014   by: SooToday.com Staff

NEWS RELEASE

PUBLIC UTILITIES COMMISSION

*************************
This information is provided as a public service notification to consumers of municipal drinking water in Sault Ste. Marie that may affect consumers in the east end of the city.

The shutdown of a municipal well in the east end of the city has occurred due to maintenance.

The well will be returned to service Wednesday, March 26, 2014 at 9 a.m. (Operational circumstances may impact the actual start time.)

PUC is providing this notice in order to advise consumers that the startup of this well may result in discoloured water at the tap.

Anyone that does draw discoloured water should flush their cold water faucets only (preferably a laundry tub or bath tub without screens or filters) for up to 15 minutes to clear the lines.

Do not run the hot water, in order to avoid filling your hot water tank with discoloured water.

If the water does not clear up after at least 15 minutes of flushing, please call Customer Service at 705- 759-6522 Monday through Friday from 9 a.m. to 4:30 p.m. and 705-759-6555 at all other times.

Let the wailing begin......
itsme29 3/25/2014 9:23:14 AM Report

right wing u'd be the first one to cry like a lil girl if u had the brown water coming from the tap...
cdnhunter 3/25/2014 9:28:50 AM Report

Right Wing

I would love to bring a cup of our brown sludge to drink if you would like. At least they gave us some warning this time.
right wing 3/25/2014 9:39:33 AM Report

...and here we go with the ridiculous... why would I or anybody drink a cup of brown water...I'd run my laundry faucet, which flows at around six gallons per minute and does not have an aerator on the spout, until the water cleared.
I live in the East end and guess what...I'll make it through to Thursday.
Lynds 3/25/2014 9:40:08 AM Report

hahaha wailing. What a jerk. As mentioned above - you would NOT be happy with yellow or brown water coming out of your pipes. But I'm sure as long as it doesn't affect you, it doesn't matter. That's usually the motto of your political affiliation anyways.
Chantz 3/25/2014 9:40:12 AM Report

bahahahahahaha so what was the reason for all the other 21 times my water was brown this last year,, at least now they are making excuses and giving us a heads up,,, what a joke, and I hope PUC is going to be donating the cases of water to the east end schools because I can think of at least 4 times my children couldnt drink from the fountain at their school on the "brown water" days
nativegettem 3/25/2014 9:40:49 AM Report

I like how people sit here bi*** and complain on sootoday, yet they don't get off there lazy asses to do something about it.
Brown water call them, non stop, instead of bi**hing on here..
Its life,get over it.
We aren't the only city with this problem least you're water is brown and not black like african's bigger problems out there.
Lynds 3/25/2014 9:40:51 AM Report

Guess what? I'm sure there are some people in this city that can't afford to waste water just for it to 'run clear.'
Battler213 3/25/2014 9:42:52 AM Report

Sludge? Seriously? Like used motor oil? I must have it pretty good then. The worst I have ever had was just brown water. Something like the colouration of lake water. I had downed a glass before realizing it was brown. Still tasted the same to me. I had also ran my tap for 30 seconds and it was gone.

Everyone else must have it way worse if they are complaining.
Frio 3/25/2014 9:46:41 AM Report

Go down to the river, chop a hole in the ice and haul back a few buckets of your own water for free if you don't like a few minutes of brown water coming out your tap..
right wing 3/25/2014 9:50:41 AM Report

Lynds

The amount of time that it takes to clear the water on average would amount to pennies, if that.

Battler213

A demonstration was organized and guess what, one person showed...the organizer.
I have offered to sample and test for free anybody that experiences continual brown water as some suggest they experience and guess what I got ZERO takers.
wandering 3/25/2014 10:07:13 AM Report

i have brown water in the wast end...and i am pretty upset about it...they make us pay for water that we cannot even drink...plus last month hydro bill was $400....yes I will complain
wandering 3/25/2014 10:07:53 AM Report

sorry in the east End
blackhawkman 3/25/2014 10:16:15 AM Report

remember the good old days , drink straight from the tap, tell people soo has the best drinking water, why was there no brown water then, nobody is whinning just want those days back, modern technology sucks and so does the puc
shorty969 3/25/2014 10:28:14 AM Report

Not complaining about the brown water but a rebate would be nice seeing as we have to waste water for 15 minutes numerous times a year!
right wing 3/25/2014 10:34:34 AM Report

blackhawkman

I am certain that you were unaware that you were also consuming ammonia.
The change over eliminated the adding of over 16 tonnes of ammonia to our drinking water.
I promote the removal of all chemical in drinking water once it arrives safely to your home but eliminating ammonia was definitely a positive step.
right wing 3/25/2014 10:41:20 AM Report

Number One Son

Hope the AHU or the MOE don't catch you.
Gumby54 3/25/2014 10:54:05 AM Report

For those who live in the East end, the Shannon Road well is the one going back into service; the Lorna Well has been active since the water main break on top of the hill several weeks ago.
ThinkAgain 3/25/2014 11:01:06 AM Report

If the water is tested and safe to drink, does the color really matter. I see a lot of fools drink green beer on St. Patrick Day without complaining.

There are several companies in town to sell you a water filtration system if your so concerned with color.

I don't live in the East end (having water issues) but I did install my own filter system, takes out the sand & chunks, lol.
Sam C 3/25/2014 11:12:36 AM Report

@Lynds... water from your tap costs 54 cents per cubic metre -- that's 1000 litres, or 219 gallons. running your tap for 10 minutes (@ 6 gpm) would use 60 gallons, and cost about 15 cents.
Sam C 3/25/2014 11:14:33 AM Report

btw, YES, your water bill is muchj higher, but the rest of the bill are fixed costs -- service charges, etc. Only the consumption changes.

This is not news it's an everyday occurrence with the PUC why would they even bother to give us the heads up now when they should be notifying us everyday
guestwho 3/25/2014 11:36:16 AM Report

when they say it`s going to affect the water, don`t they mean it might be clear!!!That`s my ha ha for the day.
B Boy 3/25/2014 11:41:24 AM Report

@thinkagain - try to remember that the same things were told to the residents at Walkerton.

How many deaths were there again that we caused by tainted drinking water in that town?

The fact is, there's doubt. Walkerton's water was being tested too, but someone missed something. The track record in Sault Ste. Marie isn't exactly perfect and it only takes 1 error. Infants, elderly and the ill (and this is definitely a sick city) are particularly susceptible. Something that won't affect a healthy adult could kill others. Are you willing to gamble?

Thankfully my water has looked fine, just smells off. Even my pets drink less water now.
shju 3/25/2014 1:14:43 PM Report

So you don't like the smell of chlorine but are going to complain that the water isn't safe? Chemicals make the water safe. The color has nothing to do with the water being "safe" to drink. And anyone who says "oh back in the day we had great water"..... no you had water laced with tonnes of ammonia. I could make my water brown on demand. Shut off water into house, drain system of water, let sit for few hours, turn on water runs brown for a few seconds. Amazing how sediment collects and things work.
TFinn 3/25/2014 1:58:32 PM Report

It's time to give Erin Brockovich a call ...lol ..!
kamen 3/25/2014 2:58:09 PM Report

I don't live in the east end, but this is ridiculous...how come they get all this brown water all the time while the rest of us have clear water all the time? Also why does the water in this city still taste like a pool? I'm by the YMCA and all the water around here smells and tastes like pool water.

Shortz 3/25/2014 3:22:10 PM Report

Run the water for 15 minutes or so?? The last brown water incident, I ran the water here for well over an hour and it was still discoloured.
Luckily, we installed a filtered faucet for drinking water years ago.
harry dick 3/25/2014 3:53:08 PM Report

rightwing has to work for the puc or the city of s.s.m. Either that or is seriously deranged . I do not believe that the normal person would like to pay big money for water and sewer and have to battle dirty water many times a year. I live in the east end and have dirty water problems . My water usage is about $11.00 a month with a $60.00 a month water bill , and have to fight to keep my water drinkable. These people at the P.U.C. should be made to "fix" the problem , or give back the money to those people that are having dirty water problems. If the P.U.C. was a private company on the open market they would be out of business because if they tried to sell their bad tasting water in bottles along with their dirty water problems , they would not have any customers.
The only reason they are still in business , is that they have a trapped customer base that has to have water to flush their toilets and wash their clothes. This is a sad state of affairs when the water supplier cannot "fix" their problems but can still get a rate increase from their customers .
WHY ISN'T THE GOVERNMENT MAKE THE P.U.C. FIX THEIR PROBLEMS IN A TIMELY FASHION OR GET SOMEONE ELSE TO FIX THE PROBLEM FOR THEM . IT IS SAD THAT WE HAVE TO PAY TOP DOLLAR FOR A SUB-STANDARD PRODUCT FOR THIS MANY YEARS.
!@# 3/25/2014 3:56:01 PM Report

I will comment on the discoloured water....but first I need to go and have a cigarette....grab some McDonald's fatburgers.....couple of donuts at Tim's....wash it all down with a couple of beers....lol...what we do as people and what we complain about...funny
right wing 3/25/2014 6:14:05 PM Report

B Boy

You do not have a clue what you are talking about regarding what happened at Walkerton.
I am a member of the Walkerton Clean Water Agency, if you are interested in knowing the actual facts let me know.

harry dick

I do not work for the P.U.C. or the city.
You state that you have to "fight to keep my water drinkable" and that you "live in the east end and have dirty water problems".
Please clarify exactly what you mean by those statements, i.e., how you keep your water drinkable and how often you have dirty water problems.
I will offer you the same thing, I will come to your home and test your water and substantiate your "ongoing dirty water problems".
electricEd 3/25/2014 7:06:27 PM Report

Why should I even be dealing with bad water...I pay for drinking water...one or two problems...ok...not the story...I don't think they know what they are doing.
OrlandoFlorida 3/25/2014 7:30:53 PM Report

I wonder if the PUC gets brown water at their new Second Line office, you know the building that cost 20 million dollars. Hopefully the building has a back up generator, you know for those twice monthly power outages.
ThinkAgain 3/25/2014 7:34:56 PM Report

Problem can be fixed but someone has to pay for it & its not going to be anyone on the Sunshine list.
ThinkAgain 3/25/2014 7:37:05 PM Report

Has anyone with brown water actually got it tested by a neutral 3rd party for clarification?
soowat 3/25/2014 10:46:05 PM Report

right wing

Why do you bother? The issue had been explained by yourself,PUC, and others numerous times and some refuse to listen and/or understand.
gr84u 3/26/2014 12:09:55 AM Report

Everyone is complicating a very simple issue.
I pay Shaw to provide me a service. If that service gets interupted through Shaws lines, cable, phone, internet, then I phone Shaw and receive an appropriate credit for the duration the service was not provided. If my Sault Star arrives at my home soaking wet and soggy I phone Sault Star and receive a credit for that days paper. If I bring home my groceries from one of the local stores and my milk has turned or I open one of the packages of food and it is bad for whatever reason then I return it to the grocery store and they give me a full credit.
If PUC is not able to provide clean, clear water that does not stink to our homes then we have a right and should expect to receive a full credit for the days in question as well as any subsequent damages, regardless of how much or little. It is as simple as that!!
Why in the hell do all of you arm chair critic have to complicate something so basic and simple. If your water is clean and clear,,,,if you do not live in the area in question,,, then it does not effect you and you should shut the F%&^ up and mind your own business.
GET A LIFE!!!
