Party. Tonight. In support of medical marijuanaSaturday, March 22, 2014 by: Michael Purvis
Medical marijuana users and their supporters will hold a benefit concert tonight to help fund the legal battle against a federal proposal that would take away their ability to grow their own pot.
A judge in Vancouver granted current licensees a reprieve on Friday from an April 1 deadline imposed by Health Canada.
After that date, medical marijuana users would otherwise have been forced to dispose of their homegrown pot and purchase new supplies only from growers approved under a new licensing scheme.
Under the judge’s injunction, those currently licensed will be able to continue under the current system - with a 150-gram limit - until the issue goes to trial.
In the meantime, local supporters are raising money for the cause withMedi-Fest 2014, a five-act concert starting at 8 p.m. tonight at the Grand Theatre.
Rob Waddell, a small-scale licensed producer in the Sault, estimates there are upwards of 75 people locally who would be affected by the federal government’s plan to limit medical marijuana access.
“The people who are using large amounts, it’s going to greatly affect them,” if the government gets its way, said Waddell.
The federal government, which points out on its website that it does not endorse the use of marijuana but provides access to the drug because it has been required to do so by the courts, argues some grow ops are unsafe and can pose a risk of being infiltrated by criminals.
Waddell said the new rules would stop him from producing marijuana, but he said it is also an issue for those he supplies, and those who produce their own, many of whom are on low or fixed incomes.
He cited issues both with the cost and the quality of the product that would be offered to medical marijuana users under the new program.
“A lot of the people that are requiring large doses of cannabis aren’t people who are out in the workplace and making money,” Waddell said. “They’re below the poverty line as it is.”
He said many people have invested in equipment that allows them to grow specific strains of marijuana at varying strengths.
Medi-Fest organizers are asking for $10 donations.

I think all the narrow minded people out there that don't understand the benefits to medical use, should not make comments. I personally know a few that have a licence to grow their own as well as use it and have seen that it allow these people to really live. Saying that we will have more unstable ppl walking around is absolutely ridiculous. Google it people, marijuana is proven to help certain medical issues such as epilepsy straight down to anxiety. Maybe instead of judging, you should actually understand what some of these people go thru. Sure there are ppl that abuse it but that isn't what this article is about. It is about the people that have a legal prescription with a medical condition that require it to cope. STOP JUDGING if you have no idea what you are talking about.

I think if it worked I would rather use a natural plant for pain than a chemical, addictive prescription drug that will destroy your organs??? I don't THINK I need to say more??? HOW can this even be an argument???
Jamie333 3/22/2014 12:40:10 PM Report
@ gurpy... they are referring to MEDICAL marijuana as an alternative for narcotic pain medications. There are many people who are suffering from chronic debilitating illnesses or in a lot of cases fatal diseases who benefit greatly from this substance.
Gurpy 3/22/2014 12:47:27 PM Report
I have Fibro and a host of other painful conditions. I do not use certain prescription drugs for pain relieve and would not smoke pot no matter how bad it gets! I use herbal products and NO, I do not recognize pot as a herbal! It is a mind altering drug which is addictive and has undesirable "side effects". No one would call it that though!
Gurpy 3/22/2014 12:49:32 PM Report
You are so smart! Everyone on this news site is entitled to their opinion. I am against legalizing pot or growing it for "medicinal" purposes period! You must be a pot user! Dumb!!

Prove that pot does not destroy your organs please. Even herbals if not used properly can do more harm than good. Pot is not safe!

So, why does it have to be pot? Lots of other medications and herbals that do work. This is an excuse to have the luxuary of stepping out on your balcony or lighting up after dinner all in the name of "pain relief. I don`t buy it!

One more important fact. Marijuana comes in capsule form!! Get a prescription if it really is for pain and not recreational use!

gurpy, you must be an idiot, didn't think fibro affected your thinking, I guess syphilis is another one of your painful medical issues, since it can make you delusional. its to bad that people in this town cant do any research before they open their ignorant mouths. everyone accepts alcohol and smoking cigarettes, and I see why, since neither one of those two drugs kill anybody on a daily basis( I could be wrong about that). the carcinogens in pot do not cause cancer, does smoking? I think so, but not really sure, still waiting on research. alcohol doesn't cause diseases or is even considered a disease, again I could be wrong, waiting for research to come back from the lab. when someone smokes tetrahydrocanabinol (thc) it helps with neurotransmitters which are in the synapse between neurons in your brain, which controls everything from motor neurons, sensory neurons and helps your inner neurons connect these two neurons. anyone will go to a doctor and be prescribed mind altering drugs without a proper diagnosis from a psychiatrist, since 25% of people are on anti-depressants. ignorance is bliss, keep being stupid people, it looks good on you. this is just my opinon, not sure if any of it is true
Jamie333 3/22/2014 1:56:10 PM Report
@ gurpy, first off I am not going to sit on here and argue with you all day like I've seen you do with many people in the past, it's a beautiful saturday afternoon and frankly I've got better things to do. Secondly, I did NOT say it has to be marijuana, if people are able to find relief from other sources I'm all for it. I said it is an alternative to the many harmful narcotic pain medications, with side effects way worse than marihuana, that are being prescribed to these suffering individuals. You are right though, everyone is entitled to their own opinion, but I'd like to think of myself as rather open minded while you have proven time and time again to be extremely narrow minded which makes it difficult to even try and explain anything to you.
Jamie333 3/22/2014 1:57:32 PM Report
And no gurpy, I am not a pothead.
Drmcorpschick 3/22/2014 2:06:44 PM Report
It's not only the pot itself that is useful. I suffer from epilepsy and pot can be used to alleviate seizures, but you can also use cannabis oil to calm seizures of people who are in a coma from other diseases. I personally have never used pot as medication but I do see the positive effects it does have on patients for medical use.
houston 3/22/2014 2:10:12 PM Report
There are people abusing medical marijuana for sure. It should not be used for chronic pain because it allows the patient to continue making the wrong choices. People should be exercising regularly, and eating healthy food. It doesn't make sense to be smoking medical marijuana and eating fast food and not exercising. It would be different if the patient is suffering from something like MS or has cancer and needs it to cope.

Have you ever seen family dinners or reunions ruined from people drinking alcohol? Marijuana?

@Hunter101 - there are alternatives but that is not a reason to not use marijuana. Alternative drugs are manufactured and have all kinds of side effects and addiction issues.
Personally, a natural, relatively addiction-free (there is some addiction risk for some, but it's relatively low) option like marijuana is great.
There is literally NO argument for it to be illegal, especially considering alcohol and cigarettes are legal. NO ARGUMENT. None. If you argue for the criminalization of marijuana but support the legalization of alcohol/cigarettes then you are a massive, massive hypocrite.
It's sad that it's 2014 and it's still even a debate. Idiotic really.

Why bring alcohol into the argument? How about this if we are expanding on the issues we add this. Where there are drugs there are guns. I`m sure there wasn`t anything else for that girl with epilepsy! It just had to be marihuana! I don`t buy into this for one second! I`ve had family members with Cancer and other painful conditions who managed without your precious pot!
Are you trying to convince me that the smoking of it is not harmful? How about the effects on the brain? Can you be 100% certain that it is not damaging other organs? NO, you cannot! People like pot and will find any excuse to smoke it without legal implications!
I`m not a fan of prescription medications but I`m certain there would be an alternative to marihuana! Something that is not mind altering or addictive. Perhaps a herbal from a herbal store along with a change in diet, exercise etc. There is always a healthy route if one truly desires it! Like I said, if the posters truly knew the side effects and cared about their health, marihuana would not even be an option.Goodbye.

Brainwashing against Marijuana and its medicinal benefits has been going on for 90 years.
Not being a smoker or user of drugs I do see something no one has mentioned.
The government wants small scale growers to stop growing so they can purchase it from one of their cronies LEGAL grow ops.
Remember it has been organized crime (the government) who have profited from illegal drugs for the last 60 years. Little has changed here... except the market is now huge and legal for POT anyhow. With the government reaping the cash-flow.
CNN had a Dr. Gupta on a few weeks ago and he tells an interesting and compelling story about the benefits of marijuana.

As a licensed, medical CANNABIS user, it appears that we need to MEDUCATE all people as to it's healing effects.
Breast milk is your gateway drug--it is full of cannanaboids. Our bodies have receptors for this substance--we were meant to use it and that is why it is on this earth...
I used health Canada as a source of medication, and while they pay under $350 a kilo, they charge us now over $7.50 per gram plus HST plus shipping.
As one who cannot take chemicals, cannabis is a life saver...even Jesus used it and it's oil--look if up, and I'm no Bible thumper.
So before you make another uneducated statement, do some real research...you will find that your doctor can now prescribe heroin for you, and most will before they will sign you up as a medical CANNABIS user...go figure--they make money off chemicals that will kill you!

Gurpy and other Nay-sayers:
I suffer from chronic pain in many different areas of my body and I was prescribed Oxycodone for this in 1998. It "only" took me 5 years to realize that I was addicted to it and 2 more years to wean myself off of it. This "substance" ruined my teeth and I now have "dry mouth syndrome" which has caused my gums to recede. Because of this I get cavities on the exposed parts of my teeth because there is no enamel there to protect them from decay. Approximately every 6 months I am at my dentist to have these cavities repaired. Last week I was told that I will probably loose another tooth...that will make it 3 so far!!! I am on a disability pension that does not pay for dentures, so back and forth to the dentist for more and more fillings until more and more of my teeth have to be pulled. Will you pay for my future dentures please?
During the time I was "using" the Oxycodone, my behaviors weren't the best and I alienated many family members and those relationships have still not been repaired. I suffered migraine headaches so bad that my face and head would swell up and had to go to the hospital for more drugs to get rid of them. I was constipated for years and had to take medication daily and very often developed bowel obstructions which were very painful and had to be treated with even more drugs. I have to have my liver and kidneys monitored because I have had abnormal results show up on regular blood tests. I also suffer from Edema, for which I am closely monitored because it can cause a multitude of medical problems with organs as well as blood clots.
Let me tell you, if I had been given the option of medical marijuana at that time I would have gladly taken it. The "occasional brain fuzzies" it may have caused would have been nothing compared to what I endured taking the Oxycodone and the subsequent consequences of it's use!!
I am all for the use of MEDICAL MARIJUANA and after reading all the comments on here, I am considering looking into using it myself.
It is all well and fine for people to have their opinions (and like everyone else I do have them), but it might be a good idea to do some research before putting those opinions to print or talk to people you may know who are in chronic 24/7 pain.
houston 3/23/2014 11:13:34 AM Report
We have one short life to live and what is important is quality of life. Our bodies were not designed to sit around. The muscles will turn to fat which is what causes the pain. We make excuses why we can't exercise. There are people that are over 100 years old running in the Boston marathon! It is up to each of us which path we would like to take. When we have pain, it is a message to our brain that something needs attention. Taking a pain killer blocks that message to the brain and allows us to continue to do the wrong thing. For example: if you get headaches, stop drinking pop! Why take pain killers so that you can continue drinking pop, which has a cup of sugar in it per can. If your back is sore, work at strengthening your core strength and keep your weight down. You don't need to go to your doctor for this advice, it is common sense!
