Victim identified in Blind River murder

BLIND RIVER – On March 15, 2014 at approximately 6:30 p.m., Blind River Ontario Provincial Police (OPP) officers responded to a disturbance on a residential street in Blind River. 

Investigation revealed that two males had been involved in an altercation.

One of the males was transported to hospital where he was pronounced deceased. 

The second male was subsequently arrested at the scene.  
 
Ian Hammond, 18, of Blind River, Ontario was charged with First Degree Murder on March 16, 2014. 

He has been remanded into custody and will make a court appearance via video conference on March 20, 2014.

On March 18, 2014 a post mortem examination of the victim was completed. 

The victim has been identified as John Hammond, 69, of Blind River, Ontario. 

The victim was the father of the accused. 

No further information will be released in order to protect the integrity of the investigation and court process.
 
Members with the North East Region OPP Crime Unit, under the direction of Detective Inspector Jim Smyth of the Criminal Investigation Branch (CIB), are continuing their investigation.
